Hi.... Urali Nairs are not considered to be Nair by other Forward Castes in Kerala. They are considered to be a backward caste. They claim their descent to Tulu Nadu, although it is not clear whether this fact is scientifically proven or not. On the other hand, most of the Bunts who immigrated South did so to join the Zamorin's army and were assimilated in to the Kiryathil Nair subcaste. But unlike the case with Uralis, Bunts constitute only a small segment of the Kiryathil Nair population, so they never claim that they are from the North. The only Nair subcaste with 100% Tulu origin is Urali Nair. Axxn (talk) 14:02, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Urali Nair

[edit]

I changed the section removing the unmentioned parts. Since I am from Kerala, I am aware of the origins of various Nair subcastes. In Kerala only two groups speak Tulu. One is Urali Nair (Not considered to be Nair by other Nairs) and the other is Embranthiri. Most of the Bunts were assimilated to the Kiryathil subcaste, but not many will be recognizing the Tulunadu origins. (Although you will find in historical records that a large section of the army of Zamorin was Tulu speaking). So it is not possible to mention that Kiryathil Nairs are related to Bunts. Status compared to Brahmins

[edit]

"orthodox bunts consider certain tulu brahmin subcastes like sthanika brahmins and tuluva hebbars as inferior.but in kerala i think namboodiri traditionally employed certain nairs as their attendants isn't it" There are three types of Brahmins in Kerala. One is Namboothiri, which is the top most caste in Kerala. The second is Pushpaka Brahmin, which is composed of indigenous brahmins of lower status. The third group composes of Iyers, Embranthiris and others from outside. Lower subcastes of Nairs like Swaroopathil Nairs and Illathu Nairs were employed by Nambuthiris as attendants. On the other hand, higher subcastes of Nairs, such Kiryathil Nairs would be polluted by eating food from Pushpaka Brahmins like Nambiars and Maarars. So I can say that only a small section of the Brahmin community ranks above the Nairs. Axxn (talk) 18:46, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
