I am new to wikipedia and pretty confused by the new language I have to learn. You edited out all my categories at the bottom of my article saying it was search engine gaming. What is that, and what did I do wrong, and how do I get people looking for information on a muscle injury to link to my page. Please help!Musclemed (talk) 22:43, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
- Hi there Musclemed, and welcome to Wikipedia.
- What you had at the end of your article was a longish list of links to other related articles in Wikipedia. Normally, it's best to link relevant material in a natural manner from within an article, for example: "in chapter 5 the book discusses condition [[X]], and in particular problems treating it by traditional methods [[Y]] and [[Z]]". Where this proves impossible to do, it's acceptable to have a small "See also" section highlighting similar topics - perhaps in the case of your book, other books on the same subject especially those giving contradictory viewpoints.
- "Search Engine Gaming" is a method by which people add dozens or hundreds of related buzzwords to the bottom of a web-page or spam-email to try and trick web search engines into listing it more favorably. It looks bad (its often an indicator of a low-quality or seedy web-site) and doesn't really work these days. I apologise if my edit summary was unclear, I removed the longish list of other articles as it *looked* like gaming, not because it was.
- On categories; In Wikipedia, categories are a special tool we have for sorting articles into sets - for example ABBA might be in a 'pop groups' category (along with The Beatles and The Who ) and a 'Swedish' category (along with other Swedish things such as Herring Soup). Your article might fall into categories related to 'books', 'medicine' and similar.
- Finally, I'd encourage you to read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. This is an encyclopedia. While it's natural to write about what you know, it's best to avoid writing on subjects that are too near and dear to you - you're unlikely to be able to present a neutral view on them.
Hi TB, Thanks for explaining, I totally understand, and agree with your edit. I think I have a proper interpretation of what "categories" means now. And I see how search engine gaming can be a big problem for this site and others. I am about to read the conflict of interest section, and am hoping for more feedback on my page. It is topic near and dear to me, and I realy tried to be objective and encyclopedic. Is it your opinion that my article still lacks objectivity? Thank you so much for your time and input.
