Bad jokes and deleted nonsense titles

[edit]

For all the ones I added, do you have any suggested improvements for any of these titles? I would like to see these up, sometime or another...

  • You are the weakest Bad jokes and other deleted nonsense. Goodbye
  • The Bad jokes and other deleted nonsense at the end of the Wikipedia
  • It's a bird: It's a plane: No, it's Bad jokes and other deleted nonsense
  • This was a test of the emergency bad jokes and other deleted nonsense system
  • One bad joke to rule them all, one votes for deletion to find them, one deleted nonsense to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
  • Damn it, Jim, I'm a Bad joke, not other deleted nonsense
  • Don't do Bad jokes and other deleted nonsense, mmkay?
  • The Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything: The 42nd page of the bad jokes and other deleted nonsense
  • Bad jokes and other deleted nonsense or, How I tried to submit an arbitration against the arbitration committee, Jimbo Wales and the Wikimedia foundation

I'd be happy to see any improvements to these titles. -- AllyUnion (talk) 07:42, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Ya... the reason why the B is capitalized because I used the variable PAGENAME. ;) -- AllyUnion (talk) 21:16, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Callsigns

[edit]

I saw your note about callsigns in your user page. You've got nearly everything correct (at least as I see it, which I believe to be closely aligned to the way the FCC sees it), but for one little nit: "-LP", "-CA", "-FM", and "-TV" suffixes, if legitimately present, are part of the callsign; article titles and references to stations should use the form of the actual assigned callsign. (You can check on the FCC's Common Database System to be absolutely sure of what the FCC believes the callsign to be.) This sometimes can make difficulty for Wikipedia because stations will flip back and forth among four- and six-letter forms for commercial reasons. What's worse, often nobody at the station knows what their legal callsign is, particularly in the case of suffixes. In any event, the rule for Wikipedia should be very simple: use the exact form assigned by the FCC, regardless of whether there are any "conflicts", as the FCC is always the final arbiter for U.S. callsigns. 18.26.0.18 02:13, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

L band

[edit]

The whole business about L band being unavailable for use in the U.S. is just a canard propagated by those in the broadcast industry who had an interest in seeing Eureka-147 fail here. The place which has seen the greatest takeup in DAB thus far is Britain, where all transmissions are in VHF ("band III"). There is plenty of VHF spectrum available in the U.S. to use for this purpose, particularly once the DTV transition has almost completely cleared off VHF-low; I've given some thought to applying for an experimental license for this purpose once my locals on 2, 4, and 5 have moved to UHF. You and I both know that the FCC under Powell has followed Eddie Fritts around as if on a leash; if the NAB had wanted real DAB to happen, it would have. As it is, there are two things they are terrified of: signal equality (not just AM versus FM but downtown class-B FMs versus class-A rimshots, and class-A AMs versus class-C graveyarders) and the even worse possibility that DAB licenses would not automatically be awarded to them (as Congress looks for more spectrum users to extract their pound of flesh). Parity in particular is a terrifying prospect, if you hold the only good signals in a market (as is the case in many CCU-dominated markets) and have paid too much to acquire those sticks. 18.26.0.18 00:52, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Enterprise E... no D... no E... no D...

[edit]

http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/scans/other/agt-top-jein.jpg

A photo of Greg Jein's model used in All Good Things... Pretty conclusive I'd say. AlistairMcMillan 14:30, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I have All Good Things. The ship is only referred to as "the Enterprise". The first shot we see of "the Enterprise", it is de-cloaking and coming up towards and past the camera with NCC-1701-D clearly marked on the top surface of the saucer. In another shot of the saucer cannon firing, again you can clearly see 1701-D on the bottom of the saucer. When the crew are assembled in the future Ten Forward they are talking about the Enterprise and Geordi says "the ship has held together pretty well over the years" and Riker says "They tried to decommission her about five years ago. One of the advantages of being an Admiral is, you get to choose your own ship". Sounds to me like they are talking about the 1701-D. AlistairMcMillan 18:14, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

ABC West

[edit]

Hi there! I appreciate your efforts to combine ABC West in with Forum Communications... but if you've seen the western North Dakota stations and compared them with the ones in eastern North Dakota, you'd find they are run in completely different manners. WDAY and WDAZ both have local newscasts and other such programming, and space at http://www.in-forum.com, while Forum Communications has been so indifferent to KBMY/KMCY that it handed off management of the stations to the area Fox/UPN broadcaster- thus, ABC West. If you don't have a problem, I'll put up the ABC West page again and shift the redirects for KBMY and KMCY. The content on the Forum Communications page is mostly good but there's some slight factual inaccuracy I'll correct immediately. --Alexwcovington (talk) 07:26, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Mast articles

[edit]

I am contacting you because you have recently contributed to the List of masts article. I just wanted to let you know that a proposal has been put forth at Wikipedia:Deletion policy/Masts to merge a substantial fraction of the individual mast articles into a more comprehensive data table. Your comments are welcome. --TenOfAllTrades (talk/contrib) 12:44, 28 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Unfortunately, despite being on a US Government site, [1] says that it was taken by someone not working for the feds. Thus I have listed it on WP:CP. --SPUI (talk) 21:09, 6 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Speaking of TCRT, can you fix Image:Twin City Lines logo.jpg by making a PNG version of it? Same thing with Image:Hiawatha LRT map.jpg and maybe Image:LakeMinnetonkaBlue.jpg. See Wikipedia:How to keep image file sizes as small as possible#Why you should not save diagrams as JPEG

TV boosters

[edit]

I know of a number of TV stations who would be very suprised to learn that their boosters do not exist. A CDBS search for "TV Booster" and "Licensed" returns 13 records. 121a0012 22:34, May 14, 2005 (UTC)

Tokyo article

[edit]

Hi - I see you deleted the div in the Tokyo article. Can you let me know what browser you use? I assume the issue you were fixing is that the the table and image appeared before the text. With Mac/Safari, in its current form the article shows both the table and image vertically aligned at the top of the article. Putting the table and the image in a div fixes this, but seems to cause problems (large vertical space before the text) for some browsers. So, what browser do you use and what do you see? I'd like for the article to look the same (image below the table) for all browsers. Thanks. __ Rick Block (talk) 04:22, May 29, 2005 (UTC)

And the issue is when you view the article you see a large block of empty vertical space before the text starts? -- Rick Block (talk) 04:44, May 29, 2005 (UTC)
So how about a div with a width of 325px? I just downloaded firefox and that seems to look OK. The current version looks really bad with Mac/Safari. Pretty much any div fixes it. -- Rick Block (talk) 05:07, May 29, 2005 (UTC)
Still OK in your browser? This version is MUCH better in Mac/Safari. -- Rick Block (talk) 05:14, May 29, 2005 (UTC)
Thanks. BTW - been here since 2003, 11,000 edits, not an admin? Who did you piss off? -- Rick Block (talk) 05:25, May 29, 2005 (UTC)

British Reckoning

[edit]

Since the British put the day before the month when they write out dates (today is 04/06/05, rather than the American style 06/04/05), 12:34:56 7/8/90 happened about a month after it did in the U.S. --Dante Alighieri | Talk 17:48, Jun 4, 2005 (UTC)

Congratulations!

[edit]

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 16:34, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

LSD Moves

[edit]

I notice that you've been moving certain articles on USN ships from a disambiged form to the plain name. Why don't you just create a redirect at the plain name? That way if another ship of the same name is eventually commissioned in the USN then we don't have to move pages around again, we simply have to turn the redirect page into a disambig page. David Newton 4 July 2005 20:27 (UTC)

I simplified some ship names because Wikipedia policy is to only disambiguate when necessary. There appeared to be just one ship under each of those particular names, so I moved them to the common names. —Mulad ( talk) July 5, 2005 16:33 (UTC) [copied from User_talk:David_Newton#Ship_names
That's the general policy, but ship names are one of the exceptions, where we preemptively disambiguate.
"An article about a ship with a unique name should still include any obvious disambiguators, with an automatic redirect from the index page. For example, only one ship (as this is written) has been named "USS Ronald Reagan," but an editor of another article will probably automatically link to [[USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-77)]][sic]. For consistency, create the article at the latter page and a redirect at the former. Then, when a second ship is given the name, the redirect can be overwritten with the index, and the CVN article will not need to be moved."
...
"Articles about individual ships should have fully disambiguated titles, and include all information from the index page; in other words, don't assume that the reader had seen the index page."

Lowry Hill Tunnel

[edit]

Excellent photo. I assume it was taken from the bridge near the "Cherry and Spoon"? Maybe one from the other side would be good, capturing how much of a bottleneck it is. It's almost as bad as the old "S-turn" on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. I'm guessing whoever designed I-94 downtown won some sort of prize and moved to Florida. Mississippi, the River, Bridges, Locks & dam

[edit]

I saw your Meeker_Island_Lock_and_Dam article, while searching for locks and dams. This isan obvious category that could be added and further developed. Similarly, something on the individual bridges across the river (initially as a single article) and eventually an edit of the Mississippi River article pointing to such articles. I'm down here in Allamakee County, Iowa in the hilly NE, just south of the MN border, about 9 miles from the river as the crow flies, or actually, as the fishflies fly. I'm game to help.--FourthAve 00:22, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel Wilson

[edit]

Mike

Wikipedia needs an article on Daniel Wilson, (1778-1858), 5th Bishop of Calcutta and Metropolitan of India. I note that you have constructed a disambiguation page for Dan Wilson, but that Daniel Wilson only refers to one person (not the bishop). Just wondering how you, as a more experienced Wikipedian than me, would untangle this! I will start a stub called Daniel Wilson, Bishop of Calcutta--PeterR 19:22, 27 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

802.1Q

[edit]

Sorry I'm so late in bringing this up, but anyway...

The IEEE 802.1Q article should not have been renamed to "IEEE 802.1q". The designations of IEEE standards are case-sensitive. (The case indicates whether the standard is an amendment to a previously-issued standard, or sufficiently independent to complete standard by itself.)
