Free Encyclopedia in Zulu

[edit]

Hi!

Looks like you are an experienced editor here in the English Wikipedia, and that you also know Zulu.

I'm asking a few people about this, and I'd like your opinion as well.

The Wikipedia logo at the top left corner of the Zulu Wikipedia is not translated. It's written in English. I'm trying to get all the logos in all languages translated correctly.

How do you suggest to translate the words "The Free Encyclopedia"?

The main page currently says that "encyclopedia" is "Umqulu wolwazi", and it uses the word "lwamahhala" to translate "free".

So I have some questions about it:

  • Is "Umqulu wolwazi" a good translation for the English word "encyclopedia"?
  • What exactly does "mahhala" mean? Is it "free" in the sense of "liberty", "freedom", "free speech", "free person"? Or in the sense of "zero dollars"?
  • If "mahhala" is "free" in the sense of "zero dollars", then it's not a good translation. The translation that is needed is "free" in the sense of "freedom". What is the best Zulu word to use for this, when talking about a "free encyclopedia"? (See the essay Wikipedia:The Free Encyclopedia for more about that.)

Thank you! --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 12:23, 30 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
