Why the "User:" preface? Looks untidy. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:25, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
- Hello. I don't plan to keep it that way. I'll change it and make the page very user friendly once I gather all the data. I'd just rather not add tons of formatting mid-way through :) Regards, — Moe Epsilon 09:39, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
- Alright, although certainly undoing earlier formatting already on the page would have been extraneous work? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:34, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
- I suppose it was, just not nearly as much as the formatting that I am planning. Sorry, since it was your edit and all. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 12:07, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
- Ah, you've got something a lot more complex up your sleeve. No biggy then. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:22, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
Organization
[edit]If the main intent is to find a sysop who’s likely to be on-line at a given time of day, wouldn’t it be better to sort the sections by time-zone or longitude, rather than alphabetically? Sure, it would be rather rough, especially for countries like the USA and Canada that straddle several zones (although these could be subdivided by zone, where more specific info is available), but it would help. In a similar vein, there would seem to be little point in separating e.g. England, Wales, and Scotland—but of course Bermuda (like the UK’s Caribbean, Pacific &c. territories) is on a different schedule. If you think this a good idea, I’d be prepared to do the grunt-work of re-sorting the list.—Odysseus1479 19:44, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
- I'm not sure I follow you; where do you gather that the main intent is to find a sysop who’s likely to be on-line at a given time of day? :) ·Salvidrim!· ✉ 19:51, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
- I may well have gotten the wrong end of the stick, but AFAICT that was the only purpose or benefit mentioned in the recent discussion at WP:AN.–Odysseus1479 20:07, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
- Yeah, I thought as much. It seemed a bit odd that the UK was split up, but not the US. Regardless, I think its important to remember that location != time zone. I know people who only come online in the evening, and sometimes I would be one of the few people still awake during the US/Europe night, even though I live in the US. For most benefit, we should try and keep WP:HAU more up to date. Legoktm (talk) 20:35, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
- Legoktm and Odysseus1479: The UK (and Scandinavia) are split up like they are because of how the editors identified themselves. If an editor identified themselves through the category "Wikipedians in the United Kingdom" or said "I live in the United Kingdom" on their userpage, well, that is pretty broad. That could mean they live in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, or indeed Bermuda or one of the territories of the U.K.. The same applied with the one editor who identified as being from Scandinavia. That is the reason why it is sectioned off like it is. U.S will be sectioned off as well, but I didn't want 50 more lines of TOC while I was gathering information.
- If you had read the section above this, this is just an initial stage of gathering information before I redesign the page with some formatting, so this design is temporary. Regions like the U.K. would still be together in the end though because of the broader scope of how they identified themselves. Like Legoktm said as well, location does not always equal timezone, even if you define a state/territory/division of your country. It only does if you identify a city for the most part. WP:HAU will find you editors active during a specific time you need one, however, some editors like myself don't always edit at time you would expect us to anyways. Even if you were able to identify timezones of people listed here, it doesn't guarantee them being online anymore then HAU does. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 23:03, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
