BYU Football
[edit]I'm ok with the "only since 1946" designation, but it keeps getting more complicated. As I was doing some checking, it turns out that currently Army is now an independent, same as Notre Dame. While Army isn't part of the BCS cartel, I don't know how you word it accurately. --NThurston 22:35, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- Yes. Checking contemporaneous conferences at the time of the title would be a night-mare. I think the bigger point is that every champion since 1946 except BYU is in a situation to earn an BCS invite through their conference (or BCS special contract). The best I could come up with is "currently playing in" designation to show the difference. Tossing out Army, now an independent, puts us back to TCU. Another tidbit - BYU was in the WAC in 1984, which some do not even consider mid-major any more. It depends on who you talk to. It's factually correct now, but does it make sense? --NThurston 22:45, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- Not quite on the NYD Bowl thing. 1974 - Oklahoma gets AP win without playing a game (last of many teams to have this happen), but before 1974, there were also champions that played in NYD games and lost them, but no champion played in (won or lost) a non-NYD bowl. BYU is the first champion since 1974 to be crowned without a NYD victory. They are the only champion 'ever' to actually play in a non-NYD bowl game. I don't know that both of these facts are notable, but one doesn't necessarily imply the other. Got to go home. Fix it however and I'll be back after X-mas.--NThurston 22:58, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
