Please don't delete sourced content

[edit]

You have deleted references to involvement in the Atlantic slave trade from the pages of William Gibbs (businessman) and Blanche Gibbs. This material has been adequately referenced with reliable sources. The deletion was made without any reason. You cannot remove material just because you don't like it. Please refrain from disruptive editing. See WP:DISRUPT and WP:JUSTDONTLIKEIT for more details. - Naushervan (talk) 02:02, 24 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Naushervan, I am pleased to see that there is moderation of Wikipedia changes. My interest is ensuring the truth and reliable referenced content. The reference given for this was ""William Gibbs". Oxford University Press. Retrieved 2 April 2013." which does not indicate any involvement in Atlantic Slavery. The business records of William Gibbs are all available in the London Metropolitan Archives and have been thoroughly researched, especially given the strong interest since the National Trust acquired his country house of Tyntesfield. No evidence has been found that William Gibbs, nor his father, siblings or descendents were involved in the slave trade. Just because they were Bristol based merchants does not mean that they were involved in the slave trade. This is a lazy assumption.
There is some suspicion that his Uncle George Gibbs, of Gibbs, Bright & Sons, may have had some involvement and it is know that the Bright family were previously involved in slavery and acquired sugar plantations in the West Indies, primarily as debt payments.
I have written on this topic at https://gibbsfamilytree.com/are-there-family-links-to-slavery
If you can find concrete documented evidence that William Gibbs was in any way involved in the Atlantic Slave trade I would be happy to revise my views. I am interested in the truth and not in any white washing of this pernicious period.

If you are personally related to the subject of the article, then you should not be editing it without declaring a conflict of interest. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. If you have a dispute about the sources, you cannot just delete it without explanation or reason. You can make a discussion on the talk page about it. Your comment "I am pleased to see there is moderation of Wikipedia changes" suggests that you have edited a page without first making yourself familiar with the rules concerning editing. I suggest you take a look at Wikipedia:New contributors' help page to begin with. - Naushervan (talk) 03:25, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
