A question about copies of an article

[edit]

Why do you have three copies of an article in userspace pages? JBW (talk) 17:19, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

JBW I have removed sandbox/2 and sandbox/3. I can't take a chance someone would decide to delete the sandboxes. I was using sandbox/2 for a backup, and sandbox/3 for publishing in namespace. I used MikeMARS52 as an earlier version to look for things and in the location in the text by using Find (ctrl-F). Please let me know if is it against a rule that i can't use my sandboxes for my method? I would like to continue using more than one sandbox to jump back and forth from an early version to the most current to look for things that have or not changed or i can't find easily.
I have removed all versions except MikeMARS52/sandbox
BUT there is a warning that speedy removable could be imminent. I can't remove it and i really need that tag removed. can you remove it, PLEASE before everything i have done is gone. Thanks if you can help me, if not please tell me how to get that warning tag removed. MikeMARS52 MikeMARS52 (talk) 22:42, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Joe Frank Chambers

[edit]

Hello, MikeMARS52,

Thank you for creating Joe Frank Chambers.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

The notability of this subject is very thin, and likely that this article should be merged with Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. We would need more in dept pieces on him in high quality national sources to established him as a notable topic (aside from the Museum). thanks.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Aszx5000}}. Remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

I don't want to confuse the current discussion regarding notability. However the family has asked me to change the title to "Joe Chambers". I was mistaken that the title had to be a one-and- only (there is a jazz drummer page named "Joe Chambers").
Can you tell me if renaming now would be an issue with ongoing efforts to address notability, or can i proceed now? Thanks.
MikeMARS52 MikeMARS52 (talk) 20:47, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem with renaming it to something like Joe Chambers (businessman) or other simple one-word explanation of his main role/activity (e.g. per the examples on this list, Joseph Chambers). thanks. Aszx5000 (talk) 12:11, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

thanks! can i possible use two words. (musicians' advocate) This is the only accurate description of the most important part of his life; last 25 yr.
[excerpt from the article] "The idea to recognize the contributions of the musicians was first imagined by Chambers as a television show. Around 1998, he began to explore the idea of creating a television special focused on the musicians who were behind hit songs. Chet Atkins and other colleagues said they thought it was a good idea. Joe didn't have the "backing or the knowledge to pull it off." The TV show never happened, but Chambers held onto the idea of honoring musicians." MikeMARS52 MikeMARS52 (talk) 15:07, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think that is too abstract. It should be more akin to the profession that you would list on your tax return (e.g. one of businessman, producer, songwriter etc.). thanks. Aszx5000 (talk) 15:21, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I had that concern also. I had a vision of readers imagining lawyers advocating
Are youtube view-counts considered reliable source? Thanks for your patience. MikeMARS52 MikeMARS52 (talk) 15:57, 15 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It is almost never suitable to copy content from another web site to Wikipedia, for more than one reason, the most important being copyright. When you post anything to Wikipedia you release it for anyone in the world to reuse it, either unchanged or modified in any way whatever, subject to attribution to Wikipedia. It is very rare that the owner of a web site licenses content for such very free reuse, and in those few occasions when they do so, we require proof of the fact. We don't assume that content is freely licensed on the unsubstantiated say so of just anyone who comes along and creates a Wikipedia account. Certainly we can't accept text previously published on a web site which has a copyright notice saying "all rights reserved", as in the case of material you have posted JBW (talk) 22:57, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

JBW I am not sure what specifically are you talking about in regard to my work. are you responding about youtube view counts? Please be clear about what you are saying with specific references. Thanks. MikeMARS52 MikeMARS52 (talk) 16:06, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Some of the text which you have posted had previously been published at https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/legacyremembers/joe-chambers-obituary?id=52840026. You copied it either from there or from somewhere else where there was already a copy of it; either way you must know that you copied text from somewhere else and posted it to Wikipedia. JBW (talk) 10:50, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
JBW
Yes i copied from the obituary that the legacy comes from. I cited the copied text and provided the reference. isn't this the proper procedure?
is it necessary to rephrase all of the information if it is referenced? Please copy your reply to a senior wikipedia editor so that i can have confirmation if you are correct.
Thanks

OK, I will say a few things which I hope may help to clarify things for you. Firstly, it looks as though you may be making the common mistake of confusing copyright with plagiarism. Plagiarism is using someone else's work without saying so, thus giving the impression that it is your own work. Obviously if you say where you have copied from that doesn't apply, so it can't be plagiarism. Copyright infringement, on the other hand, is using someone else's work without their permission. If you are using someone else's work without their permission then saying that you are copying their work doesn't make it all right to do so. When plagiarism takes place, it is very often also a copyright infringement, but the two are by no means the same. If a website has "All rights reserved" at the bottom of its web pages, we have to assume that the owners of the site mean what they say, and the content of the site is not licensed for free reuse. Even if a site doesn't say anything about copyright, Wikipedia policy is that we do not assume the material is freely licensed without a specific statement that it is.
As for your suggestion of copying my reply to "a senior wikipedia editor", I have been a Wikipedia editor for 18 years, and an administrator for almost 14 years, and I can assure you I am well acquainted with Wikipedia's copyright policy. However, if you doubt my word then you can read Wikipedia:Copyrights for yourself, or you are very welcome to seek a second opinion from someone else if you wish to.
As I said above, I hope those comments may be helpful to you, but if you there is any further clarification that you would like me to give then please contact me again, and I will do so if I am able to. JBW (talk) 10:52, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for providing your credentials. I am convinced you know what you say.
So, I still don't know how i would use the info? Can i use it at all? I find it very confusing at this state (first effort).
my best guess of the answer is an example that will provide the acceptable text. Please read and comment on copyright and plagiarism
In 1978 at Nashville, TN Joe met songwriter, producer, and Epic Records President Billy Sherrill. Sherrill became Chambers' mentor for songwriting, record producing, and artists and repertoire (A&R) at CBS Records. Sherrill passed on his knowledge and experience to Joe. Chambers wrote songs that were recorded by famous Country singers including several that were hit songs. Sherrill let Joe shadow him during many record producing projects. Through this mentoring, Chambers met and made friends with some of the great session musicians in Nashville. In 1985 Chambers opened a small chain of music music stores in the Nashville area. Later Joe bought and sold vintage guitars for famous musicians. In November of 2003, Joe and his wife Linda co-founded the future Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. After two and half years of renovating, it opened to the public in June of 2006.[1]

I don't see any problem with that suggested text. Comparing it very carefully with the obituary, I can see a relationship between the two, but not enough, in my opinion, to be problematic. Certainly provide a reference to the obituary where you got the information. (Note "where you got the information", not "where you got the wording"; that is the important distinction.)
Creating a new article is actually one of the most difficult tasks for a new editor to perform on Wikipedia, because there are many ways in which the article may fail to satisfy various requirements, which a new editor is unlikely to know about. My advice to new editors is that it is best to start by making small improvements to existing articles, rather than creating new articles. That way any mistakes you make will be small ones, and you won't have the discouraging experience of repeatedly seeing hours of work deleted. Gradually, you will get to learn how Wikipedia works, and after a while you will know enough about what is acceptable to be able to write whole new articles without fear that they will be deleted. Over the years I have found that editors who start by making small changes to existing articles and work up from there have a far better chance of having a successful time here than those who jump right into creating new articles from the start. Obviously that advice is unlikely to appeal to you if you have undertaken to write this article for someone else, but it is an indication of the fact that you may well encounter difficulties. However, you really should certainly look at Wikipedia's guideline on conflict of interest, if you haven't already done so.
Below, I am posting you some links to various policies, guidelines, and information pages. It might well have been helpful to have done that earlier, and I apologise for not doing so. Don't try to read and learn everything in all of them, as there is far too much there. (My opinion is that Wikipedia has far too many policies and guidelines, and most of them are far too long and complicated, making it difficult and confusing for a new editor.) However, do have at least a brief look at any of them which seem relevant to your needs, and of course you can read more of them if and when they become relevant in the future. JBW (talk) 20:47, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
JBW
Thank you SO much. I appreciate all your help and the links.
I couldn't possibly agree more with "My opinion is that Wikipedia has far too many policies and guidelines, and most of them are far too long and complicated, making it difficult and confusing for a new editor." RIGHT ON THE MARK
I think I am approaching completion.
