Veraguas

Hi mijotoba. Thanks for the quick response. This gets more and more complicated. Here's what I had been working from (one of several sources):

El Virreinato fue una institución netamente española. El de la Nueva España fue fundado el 17 de abril de 1535. Su capital fue la Ciudad de México y sumó las entidades siguientes: Audiencia de Santo Domingo, con las gobernaciones de la isla Española, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Florida y Venezuela. La Audiencia de México, que comprendia la gobernación de Yucatán. La Audiencia de los Confines, que abarcaba las gobernaciones de Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica y Soconusco. La Audiencia de Guadalajara con las gobernaciones de la Nueva Galicia, Nueva Vizcaya, el Nuevo Reino de León, Nuevo México y Coahuila. La Audiencia de Manila, que abarcaba la gobernación de las islas Filipinas. Esta organización se mantuvo casi en su integridad hasta la consumación de la independencia. My sources are almost all Mexican, so I don't have a New Granada perspective here. Notice that it claims Venezuela as being part of New Spain. I haven't been able to find any dates or other details for this, but I assume it was early in the colonial period or else brief. I also assume it refers just to the coast or a few coast settlements. Now your sources say that Costa Rica was part of New Granada.

I've looked in a few more places, and found that Veraguas "moved around". Although it originally referred to Costa Rica (and perhaps northern Panama), apparently after 1540 it was in Panama. (That is the year la Provincia de Nuevo Cartago y Costa Rica was erected.) Here is an account from the Spanish Wikipedia: Veragua. Also, Castilla de Oro gives a little more information.

Flag of Santander

Hello,

I just noticed you replaced this flag of Santander with one which has eight stars, claiming it's a new flag. However, neither the Governorship site nor FOTW seem to have any trace of the new flag, and instead agree with the old one. Care to explain?

Of course i would be happy to explain, The Flag of Santander was officially changed on September 1, 2006, by means of the Decree 254 of 2006 which states in Article 1 that "Modificar el artículo segundo del decreto 579 de 1972, en lo pertinente a las estrellas, el cual quedará así: LAS ESTRELLAS de plata son representación de los ocho (8) Núcleos de Desarrollo Provincial del Departamento de Santander."

This information IS in the Governorship site you just have to look a lil closer, at the bottom of this page in the section that says "Archivos a Descargar" you can find the link to download this Decree "Decreto254_2006_Bandera" and you will see for yourself, and even though some images in the same overnorship page still have the 6 stas, there are also some others that now show the 8 stars, and actually, i just noticed that the Coat of arms of the Department of Santander has also changed, before it had six argent stars in a border field of gules on the upper part of the shield, but now it has eight, however, there is no Decree or explanation to support this fact, all i know is that the governorship now shows a shield with 8, which makes sense since if they changed the flag for the same reasons why not the COA. Should the coat of arms be changed?

As for FOTW, i cannot speak for them, nor i think the Department of Santander was thinking of contancting the site to change its symbols, and the site is not always 100% accurate.

Inírida

There was a reason that Inírida pointed to a disambiguation page. The Puerto Inírida article clearly states in the first few words that Inírida is the official name. Inirida without the acute accent on the second i redirects to Inírida. If this were not the set-up then the article about Inírida (with an accent) would have to be located at Inírida (town), in order to avoid conflicts. Having the text of the article about the town on the Inirida, with no accent, is less proper than having it at Puerto Inírida, and a lot less user friendly. Now, the first line of the article about the town could be changed to read Inírida, formerly Puerto Inírida is the capital city,.... --Bejnar 16:06, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Another example, the former capital of Myanmar was Yangon it used to and is still widely known as Rangoon, nevertheless the article is located in the page of the now official name, Yangoon, not Rangoon, even though it would be more user friendly, or if not, take the country itself, The US, Australia Britain know it as Burma and the EU accepts both, but because the country calls itself Myanmar, the article is in Myanmar, now the goverment of the city in question, calls it Inirida, and the article should be in Inirida. mijotoba 04:25, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

Again you are missing the point, the article should be just moved to Inirida after all there is no other article that has that name and the "(town and municipality)" is just too much, and IT DOES NOT HAVE AN ACCENT ANYMORE, so regardless the new name is wrong, im not trying to be difficult but why create another article about a page that aleady exists, and Inirida is not a just a town, is a city, and in Colombia, Municipalities are cities in itself, theres no need to have both, and calling it town underminds its importance as a capital, after all you dont know if there is a town somewhere else called Inirida, maybe in Peru or Brazil. mijotoba 18:30, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

Accent is removed. With a population of 10,891 (census 2005), Inirida is hardly a city. Take a look at the image taken in the year 2000 The municipality is quite large, 72.238 km², and includes much more than the town. I added the official web page of the municipality to the external links. The Inírida River may well be more important that the town. Hi Mijo, did you read my opinion?

I support renaming it to Inírida with the accent, if you take the accent away it will sound awkward and as far as I know the word is an esdrújula which by grammar rule in Spanish it will ALWAYS have the accentuation see here I understand this is the English wiki but accentuations of foreign words are valid. Concerning the not use of the accentuation by the official page means they made a grammatical error, which is very common on these pages about Colombian medium and small sized "cities". --((F3rn4nd0 ))^{(BLA BLA BLA)} 14:44, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Well, to be perfectly honest I don't know for sure that the picture was taken by the National Archives, so if you put it up for deletion I won't take objection. Maybe another one of these is more clearly free use, or else we could try asking some of the people who took some of these pictures to select a license for them that is suitable for here. Volunteer opportunity in Bethesda, Thursday, July 16

The Wikimedia Foundation will be conducting an all-day Academy at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland, on Thursday, July 16. The team that will be teaching at the Academy, a mix of paid staff and volunteers, is looking for four more volunteers to be teaching assistants, providing one-to-one assistance in workshops whenever a workshop participant has a problem following the instructional directions. (We currently have two editors signed up as teaching assistants, and are looking for a total of six.)

The NIH editing workshops are only for two hours, but volunteers are asked to meet the Wikimedia Foundation team at the hotel in Bethesda at about 7:15 a.m. (time to be finalized shortly) and to stay for the entire day, which ends at 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. (The full schedule can be found here.)

The team is not necessarily looking for expert editors (though they are welcome), just people who can help novices who might get stuck when trying to do some basic things. If you've been an editor for at least 3 months, and have done at least 500 edits, you probably qualify.

If you're interested, please send John Broughton an email. If you might be interested, but would like further information, please post a note on his user talk page, so that he can respond there, and others can see what was asked.

Well, nominating an article to be a Good Article is rather easy, the first step is to read the Good Article Critera as listed and make sure that you meet each of these, which I think the article can do with a little effort, the next step would be to list it as a Good Article Nomination and let someone review it to make sure it meets the standards. You will probably be given a list of things to do by the reviewer, as many will require that certain changes are made. While the method used for referencing the article will probably pass GAC standards, anything above that will likely ask that a different format be used to make it easier to read. I'll do my best to look at the article tonight and copy edit the text as best I can. Mrathel (talk) 22:56, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

Two issues that pop out at me as I read are that the tenses shift in places from past to present, and for an historical account of his life, the tense should probably remain past. Also, the sections contain a lot of date references that could probably be easily glossed over to allow the sentences to read more fluently. I will look at it more tonight and make more suggestions. Buenos Aires, Colombia

In Railway stations in Colombia#Proposed this place is mentioned (by others) as a new station on a new line. Clearly it is not the namesake in Argentina. Presumably, this is a fairly important place? Tabletop (talk) 07:23, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
