Wild Geese (song)

[edit]

Poem

[edit]

I would actually keep "rush" - it must stay atleast in the first line so that the the section title and translated poem have the same words. In general one can just see that it is not a good idea to translate such an emotional poem word-by-word - the German text has so many double meanings in it, so don't hesitate to reorder and rephrase as needed to bring over some of the "impressions" to the English world. Guidod (talk) 17:55, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that the word "rush" places emphasis on speed, while "rauschen" places more emphasis on the sound than n the speed, but "whoosh" looses the speed connotation. I just felt that the speed was not the point in the poem, but the sound. How would you describe the sound of wind rustling in the leaves in a wood, more with "rush" or more with "whoosh"?--Micge (talk) 10:26, 7 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"rauschen" in the poem is not about the sound, like a rustling tree, but a loud movement, so there is nothing wrong with speed here. (there are words like entlangrauschen, herunterrauschen with a stronger emphasis on the movement - the usage of "durch die nacht" clarifies it as a movement, instead of "in der nacht" leaving only the noise)
by the way, "hab acht!" is not a military term, you're confusing it with "achtung", actually it is more connected to "obacht". The referenced English translation (in the link section) renders it as "take care!" which is about correct. Guidod (talk) 01:43, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"Hab acht" does have the connotation of the "hab acht Stellung". But let me try on a translation taking more artistic license.--Micge (talk) 11:13, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wild geese are rushing through the night
With shrilling cry northbound their heading
Attention, take care! Unsteady flight
The world is full of murdering

Sail through the world engulfed by night
Gray yeomen-soldier squadrons
Battle cry yelling, wan quivering light
Far heave the quarrels cauldrons

Wonderful! I like it! :-)))) ... Guidod (talk) 11:26, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Gray-colored host, rush on, sail – flee!
Whoosh on, sail on to the north!
When you sail south across the sea –
What will our fate have brought forth!

We are like you a host in gray
We sail on the emperors call
If sans return we sail away
Whoosh an amen for us in fall!
