Potential Conflict of Interest (COI)
[edit]Hello, Meta Voyager. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page International Churches of Christ, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization, clients, or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{edit COI}} template);
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest § How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam § External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Horse Eye's Back (talk) 15:11, 26 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for passing along the Wikipedia guidelines about conflicts of interest. Since I am a new editor, I can understand the inquiry. I have legal training and experience and understand the importance of disclosures of conflicts of interest. As further background, I am currently monitoring a family of religious articles about Christian churches that are related to the Restoration Movement in the USA, of which the International Churches of Christ forms a part. My personal church history includes some churches that are not viewed as Restoration churches and some that are. I have never been compensated as an employee or consultant to any of these churches. The template message at the beginning of the International Churches of Christ article states that the article has multiple issues and invites editors to improve the article by discussing issues on the Talk page. My posts so far have been confined to the Talk page and only question the appropriateness according to Wikipedia policies of one paragraph in the Lead whose subject matter is addressed elsewhere in the article. I have only addressed information that was already in the article or the Talk page and have conducted my own, independent research in addressing these topics. I understand that some may disagree with my positions, but this type of information exchange seems to be what Wikipedia is encouraging in its volunteer editing format. Here are my specific responses to Wikipedia’s COI guidelines:
- • Self interested editing or creation of articles: My comments are only about the International Churches of Christ, the subject matter of this article, not my family, friends, colleagues, company, organization, clients, or competitors.
- • Propose changes on the talk pages: A review of my postings about issues related to the International Churches of Christ will show that I am only posting on the Talk page of the article.
- • Disclosure of conflict of interest: I am familiar with the importance of disclosing conflicts of interest. To the best of my knowledge and my understanding of Wikipedia COI policies, I have none to disclose. Advocacy on a topic that you personally care about does not constitute a conflict. I currently attend a congregation that operates independently, but has a relationship with the International Churches of Christ.
- • Linking of websites: Not applicable. The International Churches of Christ is not my organization and I have no role in their social media or other communications activities.
- • Compliance with content policies: My postings on the International Churches of Christ Talk page only address the “prominence of placement” of certain allegations about the church in the Lead that are already referenced elsewhere in the article.
- • Disclosure of receipt or expectation of compensation: With regard to the International Churches of Christ, I am not an employee, the church is not my client and my postings are not related in any respect to compensation that I may have received or that I may expect to receive. I am a volunteer editor.
- • Advertising, publicizing, or promoting anyone or anything: My posts on the International Churches of Christ Talk page are not for the purpose of advertising, publicizing or promoting anyone or anything. Meta Voyager (talk) 15:33, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
