Transfer Window

Does the transfer window only apply to international transfers, and I was wrong at Dedryck Boyata because Scotland to England transfer is not international? TeaLover1996 (talk) 22:14, 3 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi, I see you deleted my edit on the Danny Welbeck Wikipedia. It was added because Arsenal won the 2014-15 FA Cup & he made three appearances for Arsenal in the cup and scored 1 goal in the cup. The other Arsenal players have the 2014-15 honor on their page, why not Danny Welbeck. I don't understand. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Powerspyin (talkcontribs) 09:05, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

James Milner

I don't understand why James Milner hasn't been semi-protected already, how many more silly IP edits are needed before it is? JMHamo (talk) 14:36, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

The information I have just provided is all true as I am sitting with Steven King right now and it is something that we have updated together.

Removing persondata

Hello. I think we're only supposed to remove it if everything it contains is on Wikidata. For Liam Daish, his full name and place of birth aren't yet on his Wikidata item, so the persondata should stay until it's been transferred over. You may want to go back and check if you've removed others where the data hasn't yet been transferred. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:42, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

PS. I've just done Daish, but if there are others.... cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:44, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
Ah, I read this and presumed we were to remove them on sight. Will check the wikidata pages from now! Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 16:47, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
I'm impressed you managed to read through all that... and it may well be that persondatas are going to be mass deleted at some future time regardless. But I was going by this, where the suggestion to migrate anything accurate before deleting made more sense than just deleting. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 16:57, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

Rehman

Hi, can you please protect Zesh Rehman? An user Zesh31 is contantly adding unsourced statistics. RRD13 দেবজ্যোতি (talk) 16:23, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

A few unsourced contributions from one editor is not enough for an article to be semi-protected. The correct procedure is to continue warning the user, and blocking if necessary. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:35, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

Removing unsourced information

Just a quick thought about removing unsourced information - is it really necessary? Especially in the Patrick Roberts case.... I appreciate that if it's not sourced, it's not supposed to be there, but surely a bit of common sense wouldn't go amiss? It wouldn't take very long to find out that England under-18's had a match today, that Roberts played in, you saw his caps had been increased by one, did you really need to undo the edit? The FA website takes a few hours to update, all it means is that you had to go to the trouble of removing it and now someone has to go to the trouble of adding it back in when the source updates. The user was clearly trying to keep the page up to date and removing it was pretty unconstructive, which is ironic when you look through the majority of your edit summaries. As I said, a bit of common sense wouldn't go amiss, if he suddenly added 100 caps and 100 goals then clearly it needs to go, but in this situation it was just unnecessary. A lot of experienced editors seem to do similar things, may I point out that finding a source yourself and allowing the information to be kept in the article, would be a lot more constructive than removing good information that just needs a source. Regardless of wikipedia rules or policies. Eng66 (talk) 18:24, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

As I stated on the user's talk page, I did look on the FA site to see if the England U18s were playing, and only found this link that gave the pre-KO line-ups. Therefore there was no way to verify that Roberts had played (he was listed on the bench). In fact the user himself admitted that he only assumed that Roberts played. Do you really think this encyclopaedia should function based on guessing and original research? Mattythewhite (talk) 18:32, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Did he not say that he used the England national under-18 football team page and then updated the caps and goals for any linked players?Eng66 (talk) 18:38, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Yes, but he stated in the same message that "I think he might have come off the bench as a substitute". Mattythewhite (talk) 18:41, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

But his source was another wikipedia page. If we can't trust wikipedia to be a reliable source then it kind of defeats the whole purpose doesn't it? And it's pretty unlikely that you thought that the under-18's page was incorrect, otherwise you'd have reversed all the unsourced edits which updated the caps and goals on the squad list after the game.Eng66 (talk) 18:44, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

We can't self-reference, see WP:CIRC. The entire point of Wikipedia is creating an encyclopaedia that's content is taken from verifiable and independent sources. Mattythewhite (talk) 18:54, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Rodman

Thank you for you snide and pointless comment. To play that back - I highly recommend YOU read the link in that edit summary before continuing to make unconstructive edits. The words I deleted do not constitute a Lead in any sense and fails all the criteria. They are a straight duplication of the text in the rest of the article, add no value and simply detract from the rest of the article. If you are not interested in improving the content and quality of articles, or even discussing the point, why so you bother ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pwimageglow (talkcontribs) 15:15, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

How can the lead be a "straight duplication" of the rest of the article, when it's significantly shorter and makes brief references to all his clubs? I would say that meets the "summary of its [the article's] most important aspects" passage at WP:LEAD. And silly remarks like that in the last sentence of your above comment aren't going to get you anywhere. Mattythewhite (talk) 15:53, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

Hi there Matty, all well?

Since no one bothered to take action after the WP:FOOTY report, the following: don't you think this category I found in several players (please see Israel Puerto as example), "2013 U-20 World Cup players" is stretching it a bit to say the least? It needs to be deleted no?

Long time no "catch", but here is the latest sock of User:Aciyokrocky, User:Sewerensar. How do I know this? Easy, edits only in Fenerbahçe-related articles (list of "contributions" here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Sewerensar), and his storyline adjustments consist ALWAYS in gluing all the paragraphs together, as seen here (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=V%C3%ADtor_Pereira_(football_manager)&diff=666748932&oldid=666748358). God knows how many more have been created, the last I helped block was more or less three years ago; additionally, two miss from this list (here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_sockpuppets_of_Hyrijesaliu), User:Ensarux and User:Steadyfingers.

Shall WP grant a block? Attentively --84.90.219.128 (talk) 15:29, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

I see that you reverted my edit to the hatnote on Jason Walker. Bots

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Difference of opinion (for lack of a better word)

Just to let you know I am trying to reach some consensus in Cédric Soares' article (certes, he will only join on 1 July, but he has already SIGNED with Southampton so the intro could read he actually plays for them but whatever! I have compromised there with the other editor), only to be met with absolute wikidespise from the other user. I told him that we don't write in future tense in an encyclopedia ("He will join") and the player only appeared for Sporting B in the year 2013, so it's not "2013-14" in box.

Maybe you could please message him, as my message has been utterly dismissed and/or ignored? Oh, and by the way, massive edit war going on in the article (don't look at me), a pity as the player actually PLAYS with Southampton... Attentively --84.90.219.128 (talk) 16:05, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. And what about the overkill category, it stays or not? From what I have seen in José Sá, it does (here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jos%C3%A9_S%C3%A1&diff=666533191&oldid=665248315). --84.90.219.128 (talk) 20:00, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

Because the player's pending transfer, which led to the speculative edits that resulted in protection, has now been completed. If unconstructive edits continue I would support the article being semi-protected. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:15, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

Persondata

Yes sir, I understand that, but without an account I won't be able to know that that action has been carried out. In Puyol's case, has it?

Cheers --84.90.219.128 (talk) 21:06, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

It has indeed, but you don't need an account to view or edit Wikidata entries. Here's the link to Puyol's page. Mattythewhite (talk) 21:16, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up, much appreciated. Now, maybe you could drop a line in User:PhilStar01 about this? I remember that, back in the day, I asked him politely what was the point of adding the geographic region to the person data (not exactly this matter at hand, but related), only to be met with insufferable silence. Cheers --84.90.219.128 (talk) 21:27, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

  • Come to think of it, I think I saw a couple of instances where you also added the geographic region to the persondata field. Out of tremendous respect for you as a wikiperson and an editor (we are bound to think differently now and then as editors, but we help each other out when possible and interact), could you (imagining the hypothetical scenario that the persondata was not in the process of being deprecated) tell me what purpose did it serve?

Sorry for any inconvenience (when I removed it after your insertion), cheers again --84.90.219.128 (talk) 21:45, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

For the same reason I usually include it in the prose, to add geographical context. But now persondata is being done away with it's moot. Mattythewhite (talk) 22:05, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

See WP:CFD#HOWTO for nominating a category for deletion. I would recommend then adding it to the list of deletions at WP:FOOTYDEL. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:38, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

Sam Hoskins

Hi Matt, You questioned my removal of the image on Sam Hoskins page. I did write an explanation in one of the edit boxes but I am new to this so perhaps got it wrong. Sam is my son and he doesn't like that photograph so I removed it with a view to putting a new one up for him. Any guidance you can offer would be appreciated. Your GA nomination of Daniel McBreen

The article Daniel McBreen you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Daniel McBreen for comments about the article. Well done! Hi Sorry. He is my cousin and wanted me to change his stats based on his knowledge. He would also like a picture added to the page. But I cannot do that yet. Would it be possible for you to do that please ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AdamHomer78 (talkcontribs) 09:58, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

Content needs to be cited by reliable sources, not from an individual's own knowledge as this is original research. Images can only be added if they are released under a free licence, and I'm not aware of any being available. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:27, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

One to keep an eye on?

I have already reverted all, but have a look at this version of David Fuster (please see here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=David_Fuster&diff=672398007&oldid=672397951), with the following highlights: 1 - intro, after "five national championships"; 2 - late storyline, two "charmers", "The team's fans were ecstatic at the announcement of the player's contract renewal." (always the fans!) followed by WP:CRYSTAL like no other.

I wager that Mr. CONSTANTINEIRO999 deserves a word of caution, but since I am not very diplomatic or at least not all I should be, I bring this to your capable judgement. What do you think? Speaking of "think", I "think" he will not give a fudge about any word of caution anyone might issue, but I hope to be sorely mistaken.

Page move

Only an admin can perform it now, can you please move López Silva to "José López Silva"? I explain: yes, he is known by those two names, but keep in mind BOTH are surnames, it would be like having articles named "Rooney", "Casillas" or "Zidane".

Attentively, thanks in advance --84.90.219.128 (talk) 20:02, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

Looking at his BDFutbol profile, it seems as though he is usually known as López Silva. And per WP:COMMONNAME, "Wikipedia prefers the name that is most commonly used". So I think the current title is appropriate. Mattythewhite (talk) 20:07, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

BDFUTBOL presents the players always that way, Iker Casillas is also presented as "Casillas" there (see here http://www.bdfutbol.com/j/j1090.html) but is WP page is "Iker Casillas" not "Casillas", no? I have presented my arguments, title stays as it is if you want. --84.90.219.128 (talk) 20:49, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

Stopping Vandalizers

Hey MattytheWhite

Firstly great job on Wiki. You're always spot on with seeing the vandal info popping up on various football articles. It's frustrating to see so much vandalism!

Just wondering how you're so quickly able to see when people make edits. I've added some pages to my watchlist but still have to go back and check each page individually to see what changes have been made. Any tools you use to help you? --Shreerajtheauthor (talk) 22:31, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for your kind words! I'm able to detect vandalism by having (probably too) many articles on my watchlist and checking it regularly. I use Twinkle to revert vandalism and report users, I would highly recommend it. See here for instructions on installing it. Mattythewhite (talk) 23:09, 3 August 2015 (UTC)
No problem. I just noticed the Twinkle changed when I am on people's talkpage. I think I got it. When sending someone a warning and I want to link the linked article to their exact edit how would I do that? --Shreerajtheauthor (talk) 03:16, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Transport

It's a great idea and I think we can probably knock that up. My worry is time. I'm about to go away for about a week and really want this to be able to run on Main Page at the end of this month when it's the 80th anniv. Is it a definite need for FA quality or will it suffice if I promise to get a decent, reffed section knocked up soon? --Dweller (talk) 05:29, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

I think as long as it covers the main bases it should be fine :) Mattythewhite (talk) 12:52, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
I see on WT:FOOTY that you're after season attendances, am I right in assuming for Norwich? If so, I wonder if this book might include them? It seems there isn't a Complete Record type book like there is for York, which is a shame. Mattythewhite (talk) 13:04, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

Lee Nogan

Hi Matty

Sorry it's taken me forever to find how to reply to you... Lee Nogan is PE teacher at St Barnabas Primary School where my daughter went until this summer. He was a bit of a local hero for me and my wife before our kids were born, so to have our youngest being taught by him and calling him 'Mr Nogan' was quite funny.. I've never edited anything before and just signed up to reply to you.. Whether you feel inclined to put it back, leave it out or research it yourself a bit, is up to you.. But looking at other things on your talkpage, I commend you on what must be a time consuming job keeping trouble causers and amateurs like me at bay.. :-) Take it easy.. Cheers.. Clumpyplumpy (talk) 22:34, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

Heh, I'm guessing you're not a York fan if you regard Lee Nogan as a "local hero" :) The thing is, all content here needs to cited by reliable sources, meaning you can't add stuff from personal experience, as that is original research. I'll see if I can find anything online about Mr Nogan's new career. Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 13:13, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

Tasci

Pushing your POV might be no different than vandalism in the eyes of many

I strongly object to your recent edit to the List of Manchester City F.C. players article. Not so much to what was done but to the way it was done. You clearly do not understand that fundamental to Wikipedia is the principle of consensus. To nominate a template for deletion at 23:54 on 5 August 2015 and for you to delete it as if some sort of consensus had already been obtained for your actions at 23:50 on 5 August 2015 gives other editors a window of -4 minutes to discuss this issue to arrive at the required consensus for deletion. To have added the banner to the right of the navbox stating that it was now being considered for deletion - only by you I might add - so as to squish everything over to the left of the screen making it appear that the navbox is the cause of such a problem only serves to support your claim in a manner that is hardly fair and just in this instance. Your edit was clearly designed to negatively influence other editors against the navbox remaining and can hardly be seen to be the result of an editor applying any sort of fair rationale and objective decision making.

If you wish to delete that navbox for the reasons you have stated then please feel free to open a discussion topic on the Talk page of the article in question which is the appropriate place to handle such issues. If you obtain a consensus there for your actions from the editors that regularly contribute to that article then the subsequent deletion of the navbox will become a formality. To simply delete the navbox in the manner that you have done without first obtaining such a consensus in the standard Wikipedia fashion is no different than vandalism - except I and other editors are able to simply revert obvious vandalism edits, but I personally have no idea how to revert your hack placement of that bogus banner claiming a non-existent discussion process is currently occurring, when what is really happening is that an editor that has made zero constructive contributions to that article is now using such a bogus process to push his own POV regarding the continued existence or deletion of the navbox. — not really here discuss 13:10, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

It's not been deleted, and a proper discussion is taking place as the banner next to the template indicates. The deletion discussion is here. Fenix down (talk) 13:18, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Claiming that nominating a redundant and obstructive template for deletion is "no different than vandalism" is a frankly laughable assertion. If you wish to express your opinion on the TfD, you of course can at the discussion. Although it does seem a clear consensus is forming there, which should satisfy you judging by what you say above. Mattythewhite (talk) 13:21, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
No, what is frankly laughable is your whole boorish POV approach to this issue. To request discussion on whether the template should be deleted or not AFTER you have already deleted it from the article hardly demonstrates a fair and objective approach to the matter to be discussed. You are clearly putting the cart before the horse. The normal practice in such matters is to delete or remove the item in question only AFTER a consensus to do so has been obtained, not BEFORE. You show your lack of objectivity in this matter by automatically assuming you are right and presupposing the outcome of what is meant to be an open democratic discussion by deleting the template from the article before any consensus had been obtained to do so. I don't disagree that the template contents are mostly redundant. But exactly how is it obstructive? What is it obstructing you from doing in your life? That is such a revealingly bias and emotionally subjective comment from you. I have been editing the article in question quite extensively for the past month or so and that navbox is hardly the thing I would most want to change next in the article. It is not the removal of the navbox I object to, it is your manner of going about things that annoys me. You have made no constructive contributions to the article but now you wish to force your blatantly POV agenda on it from afar by seeking consensus from other editors that have similarly made no contributions to the article. The correct way to do this is to seek the consensus of the actual contributing editors to the article in question. That is the only consensus that counts - not the bogus "kangaroo court" type process that you have embarked upon. — not really here discuss 15:11, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
@Fenix down: Let me add this as a clarification to both of you (Fenix and Matty). When I first saw the format-breaking banner caused by Matty's initiated TfD process I followed the link in the banner to the TfD discussion page and there was only one posting there - a vote to delete by someone called "Dirtlawyer", I believe. This was early in the morning (my time) and I had made an edit to the article only the previous evening, so I was somewhat incensed by the fact that Matty appeared to have thought he had achieved a consensus (by the agreement of one other vote) in a time span of less than 8 hours that justified his going ahead and deleting the template in question. That would have been such an egregious corruption of the Wikipedia concept of consensus gathering, but hardly the first one to ever occur on Wikipedia. When you have been around Wikipedia awhile you will realise that smart-arse editors wishing to boorishly push their own agendas play fast and loose with the concept of consensus all the time. And this appeared to be what I was dealing with here. It was what prompted me to make my initial post above.
When I actually got into writing my post and trying to explain that such a short window of a few hours was hardly an adequate period of time for other editors to have their say on this issue, I discovered as I inserted my internal links into the two times shown in my initial post - the time of the TfD initiation and the time of Matty's edit deleting the navbox from the article - that he had actually deleted the navbox from the article before he had even initiated the TfD process, which only incensed me more because it implied the -4 minutes window I ultimately complained about rather than the 8+ hours window I had initially come here to point out as being a ludicrously short length of time for any editor to have used in claiming that he had already achieved consensus for going ahead and deleting the template. Which is the cause of my using phraseology such as "kangaroo court", etc. It is completely the wrong order in which to do things and I fully stand by the harsh wording of my previous admonition of Matty for doing that.
However, there is a conflation of two separate processes also going on here, which is mostly caused by Matty executing those two actions one after the other. The deletion of the template from the article is a separate action from the initiation of the TfD process, but in doing the two actions virtually together it created the following unfavorable situation. As the next editor looking at the article I raised my eyebrows somewhat when I saw the implied ad hominem attack in Matty's edit summary - to have written "rm redundant navbox" would have been impersonal and neutral, but to write "rm needless navbox" instead is not. They may seem like synonymous summaries but "needless" has strong pejorative overtones that "redundant" does not carry - it implies that the redundancy was maliciously or incompetently introduced by the editor that added the navbox rather than something that may have simply happened over time. It was not the most egregious violation of Wikipedia guidance on how to write edit summaries - I'm sure I've written plenty of more scathing edit summaries than that one in my time - but in this instance it had an attributing "pouring fuel on the fire" effect on everything else that played out here, and you can see how defencive of his actions it made Falastur2 in his contribution to the TfD discussion.
The other contributing factor in this whole comedy of errors is the blatant bug in the code associated with the TfD initiation process that places its notification banners to the right of the template being identified for TfD rather than above or below them, which is always going to cause a format problem with a right-aligned template, as in this case. Once I had reverted Matty's edit on the basis I felt he was jumping the gun in deleting something he had not yet obtained any consensus to delete and then followed the banner's link to the TfD discussion and saw that Matty's rationale for deleting the template was that it was causing format issues in the article - which it wasn't, it was the TfD banner introduced by his own actions that was causing the problems he was complaining about - no fair-thinking person can blame me for calling him out on his apparent hypocrisy. Having since thought about this I now realize Matty had no control over the placement of that banner, but he was totally out of order to use its format breaking effect on the articles (note: having had a chance to look over Matty's prior edits today I now realise he removed it from a number of MCFC-related articles before initiating the TfD, but I rarely access let alone edit any of the others) as a self-serving justification for its removal. The redundancy argument was quite sufficient (as I've already pointed out in the TfD discussion), and Matty needs to be man enough to take full responsibility for most of the negative consequences caused by his actions, particularly once they were pointed out to him. — not really here discuss 16:08, 7 August 2015 (UTC)
