Pompey template

Why did you revert the Pompey template back to blue & white? Pompey colours are blue, white & red so surely that should be reflected in the template.

I didn't know red was a colour of Pourtsmouth. --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  31/8/06

Deletion notice

Why did you add the template deletion notice back to {{Netherlands Squad 2006 World Cup}} ? I removed it since the result of the TfD was "no consensus". Is there any point in leaving the notice back on? Maybe I'm missing something. jacoplane 19:00, 21 August 2006 (UTC)

I did not realise a result had been reached. I apologise. --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  21/8/06
So, does that mean the World Cup templates are staying? --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  21/8/06
I guess so, but to tell you the truth I don't really want them around. Sigh, just another indication that deletion in WP is messed up. I guess we should have a discussion on the WikiProject page about how to proceed. jacoplane 19:09, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
Hmmm... I also think the World Cup templates are a waste of space. But nevermind. --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  21/8/06

Image:Drogbachelsea.jpg

I see you uploaded this image, and put it on Didier Drogba.

I just want to let you know that I am going to remove the image from the article, and, in the next days maybe, ask for image deletion. The reason is that the bolierplate on the imagepage says this image could be used in under "fair use" only "in the absence of free images that could serve such a purpose".

Note that, even if this free image were not to exist, Drogba is well and alive, so a free image could be taken, and this non-free one shoudl go away.

Best regards, --Kwame Nkrumah 19:54, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

What do you mean? There are no other free images available on Wikipedia of Didier Drogba. So I see no problem with the image being used. --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  22/8/06
What I am trying to say is that the image should be under Fair use, rather than in Promotional (actually they are not trying to sell Drogba!). In this case, however, the license requires that, in order to use the image, no free alternative should exist and "no free equivalent [...] could be created that would adequately give the same information". Now, since Drogba is alive and well, you cannot rule out the possibility of taking a picture of him, so this image cannot be used. Hope I was clearer now.--Kwame Nkrumah 22:09, 22 August 2006 (UTC)
I've changed the license of the image to Fair use, is that alright? --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  23/8/06

Fair use rationale for Image:Diarrachelsea.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Diarrachelsea.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 13:01, 23 August 2006 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Robbenchelsea.jpg)

Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Robbenchelsea.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image can be used under a fair use license. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Ytny 01:24, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi there... I noticed you kept a gallery of images that you uploaded on that page. While you can use fair-use images in articles, you can only use them there. Other types of images, however, can be used outside of articles. This is due to our fair use policy. I hope you don't mind. —this is messedrocker (talk) 03:53, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Okay, so would it be allowable if I just gave a link to those fair-use images on my Images page? --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  26/8/06
Precisely. —this is messedrocker (talk) 20:51, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
Okay, and cheers for doing that for me. --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  27/8/06

World Cup / Squad templates

Where is the policy that states that World Cup templates should be above squad templates? Surely the most recent template should be at the top? Happy to be proven wrong, but it seems silly that the most useful template is hidden under others... especially when the use of World Cup template at all is contentious. Robwingfield (talk) 14:01, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Leroy Lita

What was the point in making an edit to move stub templates from beneath the categories to above them? How does that improve the article? It doesn't even make any difference to how the article is displayed... and it's also how AWB makes its edits. Robwingfield (talk) 14:03, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

Please tell me, does what I am doing do something wrong? If not, why are you complaining? --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  27/8/06
It just serves absolutely no point, so increases the storage space required for Wikipedia. It also means anyone using AWB have such articles flagged up as requiring alteration. I don't see why you're doing it...! Robwingfield (talk) 20:52, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
Okay. I'll stop it then if you want me to so much. --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  27/8/06

You moved this article back to the clumsy Doncaster Rovers F.C.. The use of dots in initialisms has become very archaic in the UK. I discussed the changed to FC at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#F.C. or FC? and the general consensus was that we should lose the dots but it would involve a lot of work.

I made a start by moving the pages of the clubs I had an interest in and any others I came across. Your move reversion hasn't made the task any easier.

I'm assuming good faith and working on the assumption that you were unaware of this and were just following the convention youy had observed from unchanged club articles. However, I'm going to leave it be for now: please join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#F.C. or FC? and hopefully we can work together towards a common solution. Yorkshire Phoenix United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland God's own county 11:13, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Aaah, I had not realised that a consensus had been reached on the FC dot thing. To be honest, I had basically forgotten it was going on... so now every club article, club template etc need to be changed from F.C. to FC? --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  29/8/06
Aye, unless a lot of people start posting objections (all the opinions so far have gone one way). The main obstacle I've come across so far (other than your unexpected revert) was that categories can't simply be renamed or moved. Yorkshire Phoenix United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland God's own county 11:48, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Can't the administrators do something about renaming the categories? --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  29/8/06
I think there's some kind of process involving posting on "Categories for discussion" (CfD), but I'm not sure how to initiate it. Yorkshire Phoenix United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland God's own county 11:57, 29 August 2006 (UTC)
Now that we've discussed this: do you have any objections to me moving Doncaster Rovers F.C. back to Doncaster Rovers FC? Yorkshire Phoenix United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland God's own county 09:54, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
Not at all. I think FC looks better than F.C. --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  30/8/06
I've moved Doncaster Rovers now but someone has reverted Middlesbrough. Could you post your support at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football#F.C. or FC?
Yes, I have now. --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  30/8/06

Caps/Goals

What's your stand on caps and goals? My stand is that only regular season should count for totals. But apparently you don't believe in that since you changed Jared Borgetti.

What? --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  29/8/06

I just semi-protected West Ham United F.C. after a string of IP vandalism-like edits. Since I see you have edited the page before, do you want to check the page now to make sure that the recent changes have not included any inaccuracies? Thanks. —Mets501 (talk) 13:15, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

I've just given it a check, I just changed the number of one player. Should be fine now, thank you of notifying me. --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  31/8/06

Nicky Forster

Please assume good faith when dealing with other editors. See Wikipedia:Assume good faith for the guidelines on this. Robwingfield (talk) 16:07, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

When I looked at Nicky Forster's page it mentioned nothing of a transfer to Hull. So I am sorry. --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  31/8/06
No problem... just don't assume it's vandalism.  ;-) I've updated Forster's page now. Robwingfield (talk) 16:14, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Reyes

It's currently on the breaking news ticker on Sky Sports News and I have also heard it on the radio.

Real Madrid SAY they have agreed a fee. They do not say a confirmed deal has been made. --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  31/8/06

Stop what? I haven't changed anything since the Reyes thing. Well no I changed the "Arsenal squad" at the bottom of the Baptista page because someone had already set him as an Arsenal player.Mr Cool 20:25, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Well, Baptista isn't an Arsenal player. Not yet. --  MATTYTHEWHITE  yap  stalk  31/8/06

Reyes Article

Just regarding the "Racist" incident, should Aragones actual words be used in the article? Hardly the most classy thing he's said.

It's a bit of a touchy subject and well, rather than me edit it I thought I'd ask for your opinion since you're the man that deals with these types of things. =)

Some words of advice

I saw you made some quite heated edits yesterday, during the transfer window madness. Two things I'd like to say:

  1. Please assume good faith. Most of the edits saying e.g. Cole moving to Chelsea, Reyes to Real Madrid were premature and unverifiable but this does not make them "vandalism", as you continually labelled them in edit histories [1], merely ill-informed. WP:COOL is a good page of advice of what to do when editing gets hectic like it did.
  2. Unless you are an administrator you cannot protect pages, so don't add templates such as {{sprotect}} to an article as it doesn't have any effect (e.g. [2]). If you want to protect an article from harmful edits then make a request over at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection.

Thanks for all the reversions and edits you did yesterday in keeping squads accurate and up-to-date, the spirit they were made in is certainly appreciated, even if I had some qualms about your style. I hope you find the above advice useful. Qwghlm 10:55, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

Heh, you're welcome. And about the protect tag, I used that I was hoping it would deter people who kept on editing the page. -- Mattythewhite 1/9/06

Arsenal images

Matty... you've just added all the Arsenal.com profile pictures to Wikipedia, and you've given the reason that "there is no alternative", when this is not true. I'm not an experienced Wikipedian, but I know that this breaches copyright and isn't allowed. Good effort though. -GilbertoSilvaFan 17:24, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

To add to the above, fair use only applies if no free alternative is available AND if no free alternative could be created. And since all the players are still alive and active, it's possible for Wikipedians to acquire copyright free photographs of those players. Look at Steven Gerrard and other Liverpool F.C. player articles for an example of a Wikipedian going to the trouble of uploading copyright free photographs.
Another thing is that Arsenal FC profile photos are not necessarily promotional. As they are, they are part of the Arsenal.com's site content, not part of a press kit or other promotional distributions. You have to provide evidence that they are part of a promotional kit and marked specifically to be distributed freely before you can mark them as promotional.
In any case, if there is already a free alternative available (i.e. Jens Lehman), please don't upload a fair use picture. I aprreciate the work you went through, but please be mindful of copyright laws and Wikipedia policies. Thanks. Ytny 05:08, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

Nominated for deletion. Sorry, but WP:BIO makes it clear only first-team squad members are considered notable enough for inclusion in WP. Qwghlm 21:01, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Tottenham have a Reserve Squad template, I don't see that getting tagged for deletion, hmmm??? -- Mattythewhite 4/9/06
Didn't know it existed. Now that I do, it's been nominated for deletion as well. Qwghlm 10:02, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
And I suppose squad templates aren't allowed for ladies football either?? -- Mattythewhite 4/9/06
Same rules as for men - first teams would be fine, reserves not so. Qwghlm 10:14, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Project News
  • The Player project has been moved, overhauled and refined. It now is not limited to the 2005-06 player list. However, only 10% of articles are considered "complete", and hopefully we can get this figure to approach 100% by the end of the season.
  • Major changes to the layout of the 2006-07 A-League season page have taken place recently, and an infobox created. A table for attendances, as well as top scorer etc. are now in place. All users are encouraged to update the scores for completed matches as they come in.
  • Recently, Perth Glory F.C. was moved to Perth Glory FC after no objections were raised at the Wikiproject talk page. All links to the old page (including various templates) were changed.
  • The project requires pictures of games and stadiums to help improve articles. Any pictures are much appreciated.
  • The A-League Portal has been set up. Feel free to update the scores, and make sure you check out the selected article and picture each fortnight.
  • The football (soccer) barnstar has recently became the official award of the Wikiproject. Feel free to hand it out to anyone you see making excellent contributions to all things A-League related.

Matty, you simply cannot post an article saying that "so-and-so" is a sprite comic. That's not an article. As it is, you've broken 3RR. Please don't repost it unless you can add a lot more info. Thanks. - Lucky 6.9 19:15, 8 September 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps you had not given me enough time to expand the article. I started it off as a stub, and then progressively add more to it. -- Mattythewhite 8/9/06

Sports images

I deleted the images as well, as they were copyright violations. According to Wikipedia:Copyrights, we can only use non-free images if we make a fair use rationalle, and according to Wikipedia:Fair use criteria, we can't make a fair use claim on photos of living people if new photos could be taken of them and released under the GFDL. The photos were listed (by someone else) on Wikipedia:Copyright problems, and I deleted them after 7 days when no one could provide evidence that the images were available under a free license. Fran Merida

Please don't recreate the Fran Merida article again - it will just get flagged with {{db-repost}} and speedily deleted. If you do it too many times then the article will be protected from recreation by an admin. This means if Merida does become a notable professional player at some point in the future, then we will be forced to go through the bureaucracy of deletion review to get it unprotected, and I'm sure you don't want that. Just leave the article be for now. Qwghlm 16:54, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

An image that you uploaded, Image:60089.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Copyright problems because it is a suspected copyright violation. Please look there if you know that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), and then provide the necessary information there and on its page, if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.

Muchness 17:22, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Could you please tell me where the copyright violation is on the Thierry Henry image Image:60089.jpg? -- Mattythewhite 9/9/06

Hi, there are two issues with this image. Firstly, the image is tagged as {{promotional}} but it wasn't released for promotional purposes – it's used to decorate a website. Secondly, the source website's terms of service page expressly prohibits recreation of the website's content unless it's for personal use. --Muchness 17:41, 9 September 2006 (UTC)
Ah. So the images from the Arsenal website shouldn't really be used at all on Wikipedia then? -- Mattythewhite 9/9/06
There's some related discussion regarding the usage of these kinds of images on the WikiProject Football talk page. --Muchness 08:49, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

? (?)

Hi, I noticed you have changed 0 (0) to ? (?) for some footballers' infobox stats, such as those of Cameron Jerome. I think you might be looking at soccerbase's info, which states for his time at Middlesbrough: No appearance data available.

No appearance data is available because he made no appearances. This can be checked by comparing Middlesbro's player appearances for his time there, 2003-04 (see here).

I've normally found soccerbase to be reliable - their mistakes are usually in the personal details section, rather than in the career stats. (I don't think Jerome's nationality is "Wales"!) It is worth cross-referencing them for integrity in cases like this. Cheerio.

Speedy deletion

Please do not remove speedy deletion tags from articles that you have created yourself. If you do not believe the article deserves to be deleted, then please place {{hangon}} on the page and make your case on the article's talk page. Administrators will look at your reasoning before deciding what to do with the article. Thank you. Erechtheus 17:11, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

The article Jason McGill has been speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This happened because the article seems to be about a person or group of persons but it does not indicate how or why that person or group is notable. If you can indicate why the subject is really notable, you are free to re-create the article, making sure to cite any verifiable sources. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. You might also want to read our criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 7 under Articles. hoopydinkConas tá tú? 21:57, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

The article didn't state that he was the chair of the club, nor did the article make any external mention of the football club. I'd be happy to userfy the article for you in case you want to work on it or use it for other purposes. I deleted the article not because of a lack of sources, but because of a lack of notability. hoopydinkConas tá tú? 15:39, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

I just thought I should remind you to update the pcupdate section of the infobox if you update the player's stats. You didn't do this for Cameron Jerome, amongst a few others.  sʟυмɢυм • т  c  22:19, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

Aaah, thanks. I forgot all about that. Mattythewhite 09:38, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Managers in squad templates

I notice that you updated the Brentford F.C. squad template to include the manager, Leroy Rosenior. Just a quick question: why are managers included in squad templates (unless they are player-managers)?--Vivenot 16:35, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

I am not particularly fond of managers being placed in squad templates, but its what generally happens. I think I had a conversation with someone about them in my discussion page somwhere. I'd recommend you look that up, it will be on this page or maybe in Archive 1. Mattythewhite 16:42, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

After a discussion on WikiProject football I've moved "Graham Simpson (chairman)" to Graham Simpson (businessman). Normally I'd have left the original page name on your user "created pages" thing, but apparently it creates a double re-direct and that's against policy. So I've changed that.
