These particles may be compared to something such as a magnet which has two poles; a 'north' and a 'south' pole. When two of the same poles come together (north-north or south-south) there is a repulsive force between magnets but when two opposite poles come together (south-north or north-south) an attractive force is felt. Janus particles behave similarly, when a hydrophobic half of one particle meets the hydrophilic half of another the two particles will repel one another. On the other hand, if two hydrophobic halves meet one another then an attractive force is felt (the same interaction occurs of two hydrophilic halve meet one another.
