Motto of the day

[edit]

Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.

When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.

If you have any questions, please let me know, or post on the project's talk page. I'm looking forward to reading your comments on the suggested mottos, and any additional suggestions you'd like to make. Until then, happy editing! Hersfold (t/a/c) 01:43, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Josh Crutchley

[edit]

Can you please explain why you deleted the conversation I having with Josh Crutchley on his user page? He had asked a question, which I answered. I look forward to your reply. 22:31, 16 May 2009 (UTC)wperdue

I really have absolutely no idea. The rollback occured when using an anti-vandalism tool, but reading over the text that I removed, I have no idea (a) why the tool would be triggered by the conversation (this is a particularly interesting question since I always have it set to ignore the user namespaces), (b) why it would have removed multiple sections at once, or (c) why I wouldn't have noticed the erroneous change. I'm investigating, but I suspect it was tool error combined with me not paying enough attention. Sorry about the trouble! Master Runner (Talk/Contribs) 21:48, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Beginner's questions

[edit]

Hello Master Runner. Thanks for your help yesterday. I'm now trying to see if my message posts on your Talk page.
I have a few beginner's questions for you.
1. I think I read somewhere that after an issue has been resolved, it is possible to delete the discussion from one's Talk page. If this is true, how do you delete a topic?
2. Is it possible to leave some Talk discussions for as long as you want on your own Talk page, or do they get deleted after a certain amount of time?
3. What is a vandal? Sounds like someone who tries to hijack a topic in some fashion.
Thanks! Manyhats (talk) 15:52, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

1 and 2: Your user talk page behaves just like any other wiki page (besides a couple things like how it notifies you if you have a new message). You can remove conversations from it by just hitting the Edit link and removing them from the source. They'll stay indefinitely unless you remove them. Some people archive their talk page (like I do), or some people just remove old things.
3. A vandal is someone who deliberately damages articles, either by removing content for no reason, adding bad content (often petty things like adding profane words at random), or in more malicious cases changing facts and figures to incorrect values intentionally (this can be tricky to catch, so people that do that are greatly disliked).
A note - you might notice that I left a {{talkback}} template on your user page - this is just a way to tell you that I've responded here so that you'll be alerted about a new message next time you log in. Templates can by kind of confusing at first, so I wouldn't worry about them too much as you're getting started, but if you're interested you can always check out a template directly at, for example, template:talkback. Most templates have usage instructions and examples right on their pages. Master Runner (Talk/Contribs) 03:24, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Abuse Response

[edit]

Good afternoon! I saw that you added yourself to the volunteer list for Abuse Response and opened up a case and I wanted to welcome you. Feel free to ask questions of anyone involved as you continue. We are still in the process of redoing the response system and would love your feedback and help if your interested. At the moment we have restarted investigating to clear the backlog but are holding off on contacting while we talk we finalize the changes and talk with the WMF. If you have IRC please feel free to join us on irc:freenode:#wikipedia-en-ar. We have official meetings friday nights but there is someone hanging around in there most of the time regardless (I'm always in there but will have a message up if i'm afk for some reason.) Oh and as a hint remember you can use ~~~ to sign your name only (without the date) if you don't want to use the user template :) Jamesofur (talk) 18:43, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Update check =]. Regarding the abuse response report Wikipedia:Abuse reports/151.188.213.148, I was wondering if any response has been received? Thanks. Netalarmtalk 22:50, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I saw you left a comment "anywhere English speaking" on the Abuse response volunteer page, and I wondered if you were aware of the fact that most abuse contacts in non-english speaking nations can easily translate abuse reports into English. Also, I'd refrain from posting your email address and phone number where the vandals will see it; some of the people you are reporting WILL try to harass you, and it happened to me even though I didn't post my name or contact, but that was because my WP username and Myspace URL were almost identical (another no-no). Anyway, good luck with the abuse reports. PCHS-NJROTC (Messages) 20:34, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to what you're doing, 'kay?

Sorry about that. I misclicked after your revert and reverted your revert (if that makes sense). Thanks for fixing it, it took me a moment to figure out what had happened. The Real Jean-Luc Talk/Contribs 23:41, 5 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
