Visual Radio in Iran

[edit]Nowadays, Radio broadcasting is an effective and efficient media that can be heard throughout the daily routine activities without interfering them. However, it is commonly presumed that, audiences with more free time tend to use visual media [1]. Therefore, it paves the way to migrate from audio to video and interactive media. On the other side, in today’s evolving media, television broadcasters are constantly searching for effective ways to promote their programming across platforms, including radio. How can enhance enthusiasm and interest in radio broadcasting especially when there are lots of popular TV and social media? The first idea is to promote the radio programs and secondly supplement the radio broadcast technology with the interactive capability. Is it applicable with the existing radio broadcasting equipment?
To answer, it maybe not possible with analogue broadcasting but can be feasible utilizing digital communication technology [2] and cyber networks [3]. Thus, by employing the added value services in digital television technology, this type of radio broadcasting coverage can be provided throughout the DTTB coverage area [4]. Adding pictures to the radio sound can boost the interest in radio broadcasting via increasing the concentration of audiences towards contents and presenting more supplemental information.
It can be considered that, the radio with pictures or Visual Radio is nor a TV nor a traditional radio program. It is a novel media that can captivate new audiences using both TV and radio accomplishments. Moreover, the Visual Radio can revive the demised arts such as portrait, photography, calligraphy and graphic. The simplicity of tools and equipment for providing content is a key feature of Visual radio compared to the other media. The main idea is to preserve the leading role of the radio program.
Visual Radio is an effective platform for presenting the innovative images that is streamed in parallel with the audio with most of the processes being completely automated. It overcomes the defocusing problems of audiences accompanied with the traditional audio programs. The combination of the sound and related pictures can connect the audience with the nature of content and consequently make a great contribution to the development of media mission in every audience’s mind.
On the other hand, the development of social media is not only a threat for Visual Radio but also can be an opportunity for creating the interactive capability of Visual Radio by exploiting cyber networks in order to capture more audiences. The effective use of Visual Radio capacities and its convergence with interactive media will enhance its ranking in broadcast industry.
Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) has initiated a Visual Radio project nationwide [5] [6]. The Visual Radio has been implemented on both DVB-T (terrestrial) [7] and DVB-S (Satellite) systems [8]. The most important key feather of this project is the process of compression and steaming in a bandwidth as low as 200 kbps for each program. The total 48 Visual Radio programs including national and local programs can be received by audiences from March 2017. A good satisfactory result has been reported based on the surveys.
Objectives
[edit]IRIB has initiated the Visual Radio projects based on the objectives as follows.
- Enhance the enthusiasm and interest for radio broadcasting audiences.
- Increase the capacity of the radio broadcasting for delivering more information using the pictures, slides, subtitle, etc.
- Utilize the software based compression algorithm in order to decrease the required bandwidth without any need for hardware based encoder.
- Implement a simplified configuration with high performance.
- Minimize the implementation cost.
Implementation
[edit]IP Based Transmission
[edit]In this project a new method has been used in the video/audio broadcasting chain at IRIB. The produced content has been softwarelly compressed and streamed and delivered to the Headend Remux using a TCP/IP network adding a new encoder. Thus, all transmission has been done over a TCP/IP network replacing the traditional SDI (Serial digital interface) signal. In addition, the stream is produced in UDP/RTP format with the maximum compatibility with the existing Headend Remux.
Due to the restriction in DVB-T bandwidth in IRIB, the maximum assigned bandwidth for each Visual Radio program was 200 Kbps. Therefore, the process of compression in such a low bandwidth was a problematic section in this project. Applying all necessary settings while compressing the steam in a low bandwidth and also dealing with various behaviors of different receivers were the most important challenges for the specialist team.
Optimized Playout Configuration
[edit]Several content producing softwares have been provided in order to utilize a collection of the various galleries instead of traditionally producing fixed items. These galleries can be easily revised prior to being aired via a web based network. Also, the producers have the possibility to feed the received pictures from audiences immediately to the program.
Affordable, simple maintenance and limited human resources
[edit]This project has been performed using the existing capacities and based on the IRIB specialists knowledge and experience. The most important privileges are: employing the minimum possible equipment e.g. assembling 8 programs in one server, replacing the traditional signal transmission and compression infrastructure with web based softwares, developing the domestic softwares and consequently leading to a simple maintenance and low implementation cost.
