Let's try to set this straight. The above should give you some helpful links. There's a better one that links to a bunch of content guidelines, but I can't remember what it is.
With regards to the template warning, I agree that it was too much. You're first edit was not disruptive, it was simply inadequate material. Thomas.W, if you're reading this, try to bear in mind WP:BITE. Though, if/when somebody reverts your changes, the best practice is to take it to the talk page to discuss immediately; per WP:BRD. You did the right thing by taking to the article talk page for wider discussion.
