I wonder if anyone could point to a specific source that would prove that the casing stones of the pyramids were loosened or damaged in any way by the 14th Century earthquake that leveled Cairo? We know that the Muslim Arabs stripped the pyramids of the casing stones at that time to rebuild Cairo. Surely some historian or scribe at the time observed and recorded the state of the pyramids after the earthquake.

It seems to me that a building that managed to survive intact for at least 4000 years would not be damaged by an earthquake, since it would have happened earlier. On the other hand, since al-Mamun carved a hole in the outer shell, perhaps this could have weakened it somehow, but I doubt this given that the stones were tongue and grooved so perfectly. I would think that one hole wouldn't have been enough to do it.
