Usernames

[edit]

Hey there, I took a look around and it appears that the account you created is actually Marinasail. The account MarinaSail does not exist. There are a couple of things you can do to change that - first and easiest is to simply change your signature so that ~~~~ will produce MarinaSail for you. Second, you can request to change your username to MarinaSail using the process at Wikipedia:Changing username.

Let me know if there's anything else I can help out with - you do have a lot of great reading material now :) And Welcome!! Shell babelfish 14:04, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Shell

[edit]

Thanks, Isn't it odd then if MarinaSail doesn't exist that MarinaSail is visible, and I did put a blurb up on there. Odd.

I noticed that my intro on User Page was gone, but when I look at the stuff I put on my watch list, User talk: MarinaSail is there, it only shows that Marinasail edited it, perhaps I waltzed over to edit that page in an unexpected way and created a page for a non-existant user?

If I request the change then will this get cleared and re-started? --Marinasail 14:46, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You created a user page at User:MarinaSail but did it with this account, so yeah, you kinda waltzed over in an unexpected way ;) Not a problem at all though. If you decide you want to change your name, you'll already have the pages there, if you don't want to change your name, its possible to move the pages you made over here (see Wikipedia:How to rename (move) a page). User pages work pretty much the same way as articles (at least mechanically, content is a whole other ball of wax); some details are at Wikipedia:User page.
If you request a name change, those pages you created will stay right where they are and you'll be all ready to go. If you don't want to change the name and would rather just move the pages here, I'd be happy to help out with that. I'm an administrator so I can delete the old pages after the move (they turn in to redirects to the pages new location).
As far as where to let people know you are talking to them, just answering here is fine. I know to look for the conversation and I can watchlist the page (the watch tab at the top lets you do that on any page you want). The reason I made a note on my talk page that I answered you here is that I usually answer on my own talk page (and the top of the page even mentions that) so this way someone doesn't think I ignored you. How people handle their talk pages (whether they answer on their own or the other persons) is totally up to the editor - some do it one way, some do it the other and some do it every which way.
There's a lot of stuff to learn at first, but once you get past the basics, you'll be a pro on Wikipedia in no time. Shell babelfish 15:08, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. I'm making another edit because I forgot and left my edit marked minor. Good when you do small things, but bad on user's talk pages because the banner letting you know you have a new message doesn't show up. Shell babelfish 15:09, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
P.S.S. If you put ~~~~ at the end of your messages, Wikipedia automagically puts your name and the date/time in for you. Its good to sign your posts like that so people can keep track of the conversation. Shell babelfish 15:12, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, sheepish grin. Marinasail 23:41, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

p.s. Are you adopting me then? The newbie who has a lotta reading to do, and no time to do it in. Thanks, Marina (by the time I hit save I've gotten logged out and the tildes show my IP address rather than name gotta be quick and no interruptions I guess)
