Your initial efforts at Space Race are appreciated, but unfortunately were out of scope for this article, which shouldn't be confused with History of spaceflight and focuses on the political aspects of the early US/Soviet spaceflight competition. You added well-cited information about Explorer 1 and John Glenn, but unfortunately that's way too much detail for this article. It would better go in those articles (and might already be there.) We try to keep articles from exceeding reasonable reading lengths by summarizing subtopics and putting higher levels of detail in separate, wikilinked articles.
