Maria re Richard Sharp. Do you have some references? This could be a GREAT article? Victuallers (talk) 15:16, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
Hi
Thanks for the welcome. I could write a piece about Maria Kinnaird, with references, if you think this would have any appeal, but it may be a little esoteric. I am far from clear about how to navigate Wikipedia and this note is a bit of an experiment for me. Are you reciving me out there ?
Mariakinnaird (talk) 20:17, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
Hi again - sorry I've just re-read your message and I gather you want references for the Richard Sharp article, not Maria ! I have a list of books which I used in my own research or do you want something more specific for the detail of the article that I have supplied ? After 5 years of fascinating research I have plenty of references. Let me know. Incidentally, I think a much better title for my article would be Richard Sharp, known as 'Conversation Sharp' (1759-1835). At the moment Google seems to fail to pick up the Wikipedia article unless 'politician' is added which is a shame for anyone seeking information on him.

hi
[edit]Oh yes receiving you loud and clear. All your questions have answers not sure I type fast enough to do all of them. 1. When you type in Richard Sharp then it should give you a choice of all the Richard Sharps 2. Maria .... I'll have a look and see if I can help 3. References. Type one of the references somewhere, tell me, and I'll show you how to do references. 4. Don't worry! Be Bold! We can always delete mistakes if they are really bad.
OK? Victuallers (talk) 21:06, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Hi again Victuallers -most impressed at your alacrity and efficiency ! .. THX
1. Try Googling 'Richard Sharp' and the two Wiki-references that come up are for Cornwell's fictional character and a footballer! There are hundreds of them ! My Richard Sharp was a giant of his time, once described as possibly the most popular man in London. Even altering the title to Richard Sharp (1759-1835) might help to elevate him up the Google pages and make Wikipedia more prominent. His role as a politician was one of his lesser claims to fame.
Give Google a chance try "Richard Sharp" (the quotes are important and stop you getting 'Richard had a sharp knife then we need an extra word ... maybe 1759 or 1835 or conversation or hatter
2. Sample reference (thanks) 'Conversation Sharp - The Biography of a London Gentleman Richard Sharp (1759-1835) in Letters, Prose and Verse'. D. Knapman, 2004 [Private Publication).
I have put in a reference... so we have the ref above. You need to put ref in square brackets before it. and ref/ with square brackets after it. You then put all of it in your article after where you want the footnate to appeat.... experiment!
3. How do you highlight certain words in blue for cross-referencing? - or is this the editor's prerogative? Look at how this is written - YOU ARE the Editor!!! Victuallers (talk) 13:00, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Maria..
1. Richard Sharp was best known as 'Conversation Sharp' and most researchers, academics etc will probably look for him under this heading rather than hunt amongst the many 'Richards'. On balance I would recommend such a heading and if you have some editorial function in this regard, how about it?. Failing this, maybe Wikipedia could consider a separate entry for 'Conversation Sharp' simply showing a cross reference to 'see Richard Sharp (politician)'.Or is this something I could do? It is possible.... I have created an entry called "Conversation Sharp" ... if you enter that it will take you straight to our Richard. Its called a "redirect". Very little thing but an odd thing to set up... so I did it for you being as you are a newbie.
2. I have put in some references, following your help. Seen them. Well done ... it looks very professional. If you look at the Darwin one I added then you will see how you can get the same ref in two different places.
3. Any further tips? - There are some more links required for people like Macauley and other notable people ... I think you will be able to see how by looking at the existing ones. I added a picture to Thomas Drummond .... do you have a pic for Richard or Maria? I can't believe they didn't have one bein as both of them had the collection of paintings that Richard bought of the Thrales. Do you have the Maria book?
Good JOB ... Roger aka Victuallers (talk) 09:18, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
copyright
[edit]Don't believe the copyright notices. The law says 70 years after the authors death. But still you see 18th century paintings with copyright .... do you know where there is an image? The Thos. Drummond pic said "copyright" hmmm I don't think so! You are going to do very well on wikipedia. When are you going to do your namesake? Victuallers (talk) 22:04, 20 July 2008 (UTC). Aaah moving house I'm told its the second most dtressful thing after a divorce .... moving house is cheaper! See you when you return... although it may be sooner than you plan... Welcome
[edit]Hi Maria
Thanks for the information you added on the London Institution which is very informative. I have made a few edits which I hope you do not take amiss. There are certain requirements in editing wiki, so please see this as helping a new editor. These are to do with neutral point of view, no original research, no copyvio and avoiding peacock and weasel terms. The text you pasted originally looked like a straight cut and paste and someone else might have just reverted it but there was clearly merit in working on it. I have taken out text such as "It is not surprising perhaps" and "felt outraged that they" which were rather loaded, but removing them doesnt detract from the meaning at all. A lot of the other edits were similar toning-downs. Links to other articles can be simplified by what is called piping. Richard Sharp (politician) is rather clumsy, so you can pipe it as Richard Sharp or even Conversation Sharp. Other comments are hopefully self explanatory. I may try and put back the other list which might be interesing with wikilinks but not without it. Some of the links to people in the other lists turn out to be quite revealing. Please contact me for help if you need. Regards Motmit (talk) 20:30, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
- Got your message - thanks. There is a lot to learn on Wiki but you will find people very helpful. Hope your computer gets better soon. Regards Motmit (talk) 09:19, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

namesake
[edit]Hi again Maria, I have been busy today and added stuff on many of the articles you have created. I see Motmit has given you some advice. Good. I was planning to a) get you to mail me the picture of Conversation Sharp .... or see "upload file" to your left. I also hoped to get your namesake article on the main page, The hook I would like would mention the St Vincent connection... do you have a good online reference or a page number? Are you ok if I claim secondary authorship? Victuallers (talk) 22:03, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, Vic, for the various polishing of my articles - you're very quick. I am not at all precious about secondary authorship etc so do what you wish. Not sure about your sentence,"The hook I would like..." what exactly do you want a ref for - is it the volcano episode? Not sure how to communicate with 'Motmit'-do I write on this same page as I am writing to you? Sorry to be such a poor navigator. My computer is expiring so I shall be in e-limbo for a few days getting it repaired, but will resume with you asap. All good wishes, Mariakinnaird (talk) 08:34, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

AfD nomination of King of Clubs (Whig club)
[edit]I have nominated King of Clubs (Whig club), an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/King of Clubs (Whig club). Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. Hi I have added some references - does this help? Mariakinnaird (talk) 17:20, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
2nd actually
[edit]Hi, actually its your second wiki mugging! Your mariaK article was put up for speedy deletion whilst it was on the main page. Another admin promptly removed that but added a template for notability. I deleted that after it was obvious that it was people wanting to make a point rather than do anything. Don't worry about your AfD .... just keep an eye on it. I will take a look in a few days if I remember. I think there is little point in showing up early as some just love the fight. Don't be too concerned or disheartened. Victuallers (talk) 18:39, 27 January 2009 (UTC)
No research .... just mistakes! Please correct. Thanks for thx Victuallers (talk) 11:32, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
London Institution
[edit]Thanks for working on the back-links - one of those things I never got round to doing. Regards Motmit (talk) 21:36, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Hi
[edit]The picture failed due to license rights. Someone needs to champion the permission through the Wikipedia Commons process... which I don't fully understand (or want to). The easiest route is to get your mate a wiki commons account and show her how to load the picture herself when she can say easily that she gives permission. Hope that helps MK, Victuallers (talk) 07:55, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
