China as an emerging superpower

[edit]

I think we started off on the wrong foot, because I get this negative vibe towards me from your comments. So I have replied to your comments on the talk page, I have seen Hero, I do know Zhang Yimou but know that others do not know Zhang Yimou. Whatever you might say, Chinese language films aren't all that popular in Western society, English films featuring Chinese actors like Jackie Chan are very popular and Jackie Chan definitely does a good job in carrying Chinese culture. But not Zhang Yimou. Please AGF. Nobleeagle [TALK] [C] 06:10, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I apologize for the biting tone of my comments. But disagree with the notion that you have to be popular among the general public to be known and respected. Zhang Yimou is certainly well-known and respected amongst international film critics. Jackie Chan is popular and well-known, but Zhang Yimou is still well-known internationally in his field. Regarding my tone, I feel a lot of the China-related articles here are regretably being "sieged" by a few Indian (or pro-India) editors. I have the utmost respect for India and India's current economic achievements (as most Chinese in China do too on account of our parallel modern histories), but I sense there is some kind of competition between the editors of the two countries in Wikipedia here, and so naturally suspect political agenda motivating certain (very blatantly POV) edits on the China articles. Thank you for your message, as it has made me realize that perhaps this is not the case. I agree that the China as an emerging superpower (as well as the India, EU articles in the series) article has a lot of problems, and I would like constructive suggestions to make the article more relevant and informative. But I don't think patronizing and generalized lectures on "freedom", "democracy" and "a good life" is necessary in the Talkpages for the China articles. Who doesn't love freedom? The Chinese editors on Wikipedia come from diverse backgrounds with diverse political views, we aren't all card-carrying Commies. But most would agree with me that there are different freedoms and some freedoms are best enjoyed at a later time, just as a teenager should not have the freedom to drink alcohol. So let's be more practical, try to make our Wikipedia articles better, and save philosophical/moral viewpoints and arguments for the dinner table. Cheers. --Mamin27 07:32, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank-you for your comments. Hopefully we can generate some educated discussion here. Btw, please consider joining WP:PIIR and placing it on your watchlist so that you keep up to date with announcements. Now...Zhang Yimou may be respected and lack of popularity does not translate to lack of respect, but remember this is the China as an emerging superpower article, if he is not popular amongst the general foreign public, he is not influencing non-Chinese to explore Chinese culture, his movies may be and the film industry ought to be mentioned, but he is not. Image use policy

[edit]

Would you please read the link I posted in the edit summary Wikipedia:Image use policy#Free licenses which very clearly states:

Licenses which restrict the use of the media to non-profit or educational purposes only (i.e. noncommercial use only), or are given permission to only appear on Wikipedia, are not free enough for Wikipedia's usages or goals and will be deleted.[2]. Sources of free images can be found at Wikipedia:Free image resources. In short, Wikipedia media (with the exception of "fair use" media — see below) should be as "free" as Wikipedia's content — both to keep Wikipedia's own legal status secure as well as to allow for as much re-use of Wikipedia content as possible.

Regards, cab 04:18, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I apologise for being uncivil earlier; I suspect the confusion is arising because of the contrast between Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 and Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0. They are not the same. Only the latter are able to be used freely on Wikipedia and are eligible to be tagged {{cc-by-sa-2.0}}; the former, like any other kind of non-commercial licences, can only be used under fair use (e.g. in an article depicting the subject of the photograph, where no free alternative is available). I will appreciate it if you revert your change and tag your images for deletion as ineligible for use on Wikipedia. cab 04:36, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

== Image:Shanghaimall.jpg listed for deletion ==
Dear uploader: The media file you uploaded as Image:Shanghaimall.jpg has been listed for speedy deletion because you selected a copyright license type implying some type of restricted use, such as for non-commercial use only, or for educational use only or for use on Wikipedia by permission. While it might seem reasonable to assume that such files can be freely used on Wikipedia, a non-profit website, this is in fact not the case. Please do not upload any more files with these restrictions on them, because content on Wikipedia needs to be compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License, which allows anyone to use it for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial.

If you created this media file and want to use it on Wikipedia, you may re-upload it (or amend the image description if it has not yet been deleted) and use the license {{GFDL-self}} to license it under the GFDL, or {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} to license it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, or use {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain.

If you did not create this media file but want to use it on Wikipedia, there are two ways to proceed. First, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list if you believe one of those fair use rationales applies to this file. Second, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.

If you have any questions please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you. —Pilotguy (ptt) 20:52, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:CASC.gif)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:CASC.gif. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Confuciustemple.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Strangerer (Talk) 03:38, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image (Image:CNSA.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:CNSA.jpg. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Fair use rationale for Image:Shenzhou6training.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Shenzhou6training.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 16:05, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified source for Image:Shenzhou6training.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Shenzhou6training.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 08:14, 24 June 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Bkell (talk) 08:14, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
