ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Your question at Jefferson Davis

hello, @MainePatriot: You added a "why" flag on the sentence in the Jefferson Davis article that reads, "As he and [his brother] Joseph observed national attempts to limit slavery in new territories, Davis became increasingly engaged in politics^[why?], benefitting from his brother's mentorship and political influence." It seems obvious from context that the sentence means he entered politics in order to become active in defending slavery and to oppose efforts and a perceived trend toward limiting it. The sentence has two footnotes citing four scholarly sources. Are you suggesting you think the inference needs to be spelled out? Or that the inference I think it apparent is in fact not right? Or that the sources say something else? Or that the sources don't say? Not sure what you're looking for. (I am not a Davis expert, by the way, and don't have any information or further sources to contribute.) (I also think "benefitting" needs only one T.)
