MadmanBot

How would you feel towards MadmanBot running an additional task? There was a discussion about restoring the username of a vanished editor who began editing again and was curious how many actually were still editing while vanished because no one noticed it.

Similar to the task that you already run for Wikipedia:Inactive administrators, I was thinking about a similar script being run periodically for checking edits by vanished users. All that would be required is that a bot scan through a list of vanished users (probably kept on some kind of sub-page that can be manually edited) every few days or so and if a vanished user begins editing again, an e-mail be shot to wikien-bureaucrats@lists.wikimedia.org to notify them quietly of them editing again. Regards, — Moe ε 06:46, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

The problem is that in the incident in February to which you refer, the vanished user was editing via a sockpuppet, not as Vanished 6551232 (talk · contribs); that'd be impossible for a bot to detect. I'm not sure how helpful this would be in any case. — madman 13:41, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
Oh, I'm actually not referring to that. User:Vanished user qwqwijr8hwrkjdnvkanfoh4 actually returned to begin editing again, which someone noticed and a 'crat revoked their right to vanish. This was actually the thought behind this particular task, to notify 'crats of vanished editors privately of the vanished still editing. Regards, — Moe ε 16:27, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
Ah. I obviously hadn't heard of that. I'm still not convinced of the usefulness of the task, though I'd request it if the bureaucrats wanted it. I'm not sure that the bureaucrats would want a list of vanished users everyone could view, though; usually they hide the log action when they rename users invoking RTV. — madman 19:24, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
Well, realistically, the list of vanished users would be no more visible now than the would be in Special:ListUsers except it would be editable to add and remove users. Regards, — Moe ε 22:40, 1 August 2012 (UTC)

A bowl of strawberries for you!

Thanks for the help at OTRS, especially, working on the back of the queue. We'll get it back down to zero soon. SPhilbrick(Talk) 18:26, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I hope so. madman 19:22, 1 August 2012 (UTC)
Holy Cow!!! I didn't recognize the place. I thought I was seeing things, or maybe I should say, not seeing things, because I was looking for a particular entry in commons, didn't see it and wondered it it might be in en, and I couldn't find en.Nice work. --SPhilbrick(Talk) 01:25, 2 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I tried not to rush and to make my responses as good as they could be, so I was surprised myself! Hopefully it'll make up for my negligence over the past few weeks and hopefully the backlog stays low! madman 01:46, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

Switched templates

You approved my bot right as I was going to add a change to the discussion. I realized I could do housing unit density with a template as well and since it was the same idea as population density I used that template then I noticed this bug with that template
{{Pop density|100|1.06|sqmi|km2}}
gives
90/sq mi (36/km2)
Since the town I was testing with had exactly 100 houses it thinks I only want 1 digit of precision, which isn't what I want, and the Pop density template doesn't provide a way to control precision like the convert one does so I switched to the convert template and now the population and housing density sentences look like this
The [[population density]] was {{convert|158.5|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|1}}. There were 100 housing units at an average density of {{convert|94.3|/sqmi|/km2|1}}.
The population density was 158.5 inhabitants per square mile (61.2/km2). There were: 100 housing units at an average density of 94.3 per square mile (36.4/km2).

Excellent. You may feel free to edit the archived request if you'd like to put that in the record. The request was approved because I'm confident in your ability to monitor the data pertaining to your task and adjust it as needed. We all find little things like that that we need to account for in the future, and that's why it's the overall implementation that we review, and not the minutiae. Cheers! madman 17:28, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Phone call about WP:Turnitin

Hi Madman! The Turnitin project I mentioned to you a while back is moving towards an RfC to determine if we can trial their system. Part of the trial is a comparison of Turnitin and Madman/Coren Bot and I really want your input to make sure we're designing an effective trial. Would you be able to chat some time this week, maybe Wednesday around 4pm EST? Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 15:57, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Generally, I'm not available until about 5:00 p.m. on weekdays (as I'm at work, and often don't even have my phone if I'm on a secure site). The earliest I could possibly do would be 4:30 p.m., at which point I could join the call while heading home. Thanks! — madman 17:45, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
Let's do evening them. How about 5:15pm EST? Or we could do later, like 8pm? Whichever is best for you. Ocaasi t | c 18:16, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
Either would be perfect. Thanks! — madman 18:18, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
Also, please note MadmanBot isn't performing this function anymore; Coren's active again. So you may want to get him involved in this. (Hopefully we'll both be in a position to contribute whatever changes to the bot might be necessary if this goes forward.) — madman 18:19, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
Ok, 5:15pm Wednesday. I've also messaged Coren separately to try and talk this week. I want your input either way since you have deep experience in this area. I'll email you my number just in case you don't have it. Looking forward to talking! Ocaasi t | c 18:41, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

I've emailed you about a 1pm conference call tomorrow. Would love you to join! Ocaasi t | c 16:34, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

MadmanBot and WP:SCV

Have you just turned MadmanBot off entirely since CorenSearchBot is nominally up and running again or do you intend to have it keep running as a backup bot intermittently? VernoWhitney (talk) 02:24, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

At the moment it's disabled due to its having malfunctioned early this month; Coren brought CorenSearchBot back online before I could re-enable it, so I saw no need. I'm in the process of moving my bots from the Toolserver to Labs, and I hadn't noticed that CorenSearchBot hasn't been running in some time. If you're running VWBot against the updated code at http://www.uberbox.org/~marc/csb.pl (and I'm sure you are, as the old API doesn't work anymore), I think that should be fine, unless you don't want to run it long-term or you're using your own BOSS key instead of Wikimedia's. — madman 05:03, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
I'm not actually. I don't have Wikimedia's BOSS key so I worked out a different new search function for myself. My code has also diverged from an older version of CSB since it's specifically set up to run as a back-up and adds a delay as well as extra checks to see if an article's already been tagged. I guess I was mostly wondering if I should get it to look out for MadmanBot's edits as well, to avoid any possibility of double-tagging an article. I also have some other pre-trial bot tasks running in userspace which examine edits from CSB which also ought to be updated if yours is going to be another regular editor. VernoWhitney (talk) 14:07, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
The possibility of MadmanBot acting as a backup bot for CorenSearchBot still exists, yes. And I'm a little concerned that the older code and a different search function are used by VWBot. VWBot can't really be called a mirror of CorenSearchBot then. Should we maybe compare the results of MadmanBot (using Yahoo! BOSS) and VWBot to see if VWBot might be missing anything? I'm not overly concerned by it, but it may be worth it to have MadmanBot primary, VWBot secondary or for me to get you Wikimedia login credentials for Yahoo! BOSS. I don't know. — madman 19:21, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
There's certainly a likelihood that it will be looking at three different results, but then even when both CorenSearchBot and VWBot were running simultaneously (back when Yahoo's API was still free) it would still tag a handful every day, presumably because Yahoo was feeding us slightly different results. Once it has those (possibly different) results it still uses the same matching algorithm, so I didn't figure it was that big of an issue and it wasn't really commented on during that BRFA.
I certainly have no objection to going back to Yahoo and using Wikimedia's key, but I'm not sure how that would work logistically. VWBot is basically a hot backup -- it's always running and checking every new article, just with a 5 minute delay so as not to start racing with CSB. That would mean double the number of search calls through BOSS if that's any sort of problem. I designed it that way so it would take both bots going down to stop the copyvio checks entirely.
In any case I'll code it to make sure it doesn't get into a race with MadmanBot when/if they're both running. I'll also pull up a diff against CSB's new code later today and see if I'm missing out on any other important changes/updates. VernoWhitney (talk) 20:53, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

HighBeam 5

Hey Madman! I know there's lots going on both on-wikipedia and off. Still, the Wikipedia Library marches on and HighBeam Round 5 is ready to go. The approved editor list is here. Please let me know if we can send out codes in the next 1-2 weeks. Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 19:59, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

Sure. I'm focusing on the SCV corpus right now but should be able to do this within the next two days. — madman 00:57, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
Done – Will update page and spreadsheet shortly. — madman 18:20, 29 August 2012 (UTC)  Donemadman 18:51, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
Awesome. It's almost getting cliche at this point, but thank you. I will send out talk page messages via edwardsbot once the spreadsheet is updated. Ocaasi t | c 01:54, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
It has been; that was my second {{done}}. madman 01:58, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
Ok, spreadsheet is updated per the below log. All approved users were messaged and the failed-delivery users were sent additional instructions. Phew. Ocaasi t | c 15:25, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Overwritten? [1]

Was this a mistake or? [2] -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk 23:50, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Yes, that was a mistake; my apologies. I don't even know how I added a {{unsigned}} template without knowing it. madman 00:12, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
Oh, looks like it was just an edit conflict that somehow stomped on your revision without notifying me. Will fix. — madman 00:14, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

bot question

Thank you for the approval... I think. More work is always fun.

I have a question. If Yobot has been approved for a task and I want/coerced to run the same task with my bot, do I need to go thru the whole approval processes again? The discussion of the talk is here. It is adding WP Biography to talk pages. Bgwhite (talk) 05:21, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

You do, just because code needs to be tested in a new environment, etc. But if it's the same code, a quick trial and a speedy approval can generally be expected. — madman 05:29, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
Ok, thank you. Bgwhite (talk) 05:34, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Inappropriate speedy approval

Yeah, I'm a member of the community, and I would like the point I raised and the question I asked dealt with in an appropriate manner. This bot editor does not have a squeaky clean record with this bot and this task, and community input should be addressed. Feel free to respond at the Bot owners' noticeboard. -68.107.140.60 (talk) 03:25, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

I have responded there per your request. Thanks, — madman 04:16, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

Questia and plain text emails

Hey Madman, someone mentioned/complained about the emails being in plain text: User_talk:EdwardsBot#Questia_delivery. I think they mistook MadmanBot for EdwardsBot on account of the talk page messages. I'm trying to figure out what the issue is, and what's wrong with plain text anyway. Just thought I'd point you to it. Ocaasi t | c 22:48, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

I'll wait for the answer there as to what's wrong with plain text e-mails. They're virtually guaranteed not to be misinterpreted by e-mail clients, don't need any special encoding or decoding... they're just plain simple, and simplicity is a virtue when it comes to automation. Cheers, — madman 03:33, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

MadmanBot ?

I just had to take VWBot's SCV code offline since it's not playing nicely with my ISP. Is it possible for you to fire up yours and pick up the slack until I get things sorted out on my end? VernoWhitney (talk) 00:24, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Sure; can do later this evening. — madman 00:50, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
Incidentally, I've set up a script to restart the bot if it fails now. I never expect how often the Toolserver fails to do something simple like fork a process. Sigh. — madman 00:55, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
Well, the CSB.pl codebase isn't exactly stable either. There's some input that causes it to crash--blacklisted websites maybe? Whatever the bug is, mine crashed on a regular enough basis that I just made a launcher script:

while true
do
perl ./csb.pl
done

<shrug> It's beginning to look like my new ISP and constantly running bots are irreconcilable so I guess I'll look into toolserver or some other hosting service for that part of VWBot as well. VernoWhitney (talk) 02:58, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
Interesting. I've actually never had CSB crash on me, just Perl because the server was out of some resources or another (and it tends to stay up for at least two-three days before even that happens). I wonder what the difference is between our environments? Maybe it's the custom search algorithm you mentioned? In any case, I hope to keep MadmanBot running for a while. A team of users including myself is researching prior approaches to copyvio detection and some new ones, and I hope to test some of our theories very soon! madman 15:54, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

List of news and current affairs programmes broadcast by MediaCorp Channel 8

I was organising the original page from which it was taken: List of programmes broadcast by MediaCorp Channel 8. That page was vandalised and totally messed up by some idiot and it was huge to edit so I am splitting it up into separate pages for easier reading and editing. 10:05, 22 September (UTC)

Cheers, User:Acsian88

Please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. You must attribute splits like this, or you're violating Wikipedia's licensing requirements by removing all contribution history. I did not tag these articles, but I or another WP:SCV volunteer will add this attribution when we can. Thanks, — madman 18:57, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

BRFAs

Do you want to handle Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Dasschaefchenbot or should I just expire it? MBisanz talk 15:41, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

I should probably handle it. I didn't notice the operator had responded since the tag wasn't nullified (too dependent on bots). Thanks, — madman 15:49, 9 October 2012 (UTC)
No problem. Thanks for handling it. MBisanz talk 16:55, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

move cat

hello dear madman. im working on the one code with my friend is that the code can move cat automatically. course the code is almost done. when you go to here and add a new request (example: Category:micheal jackson to category: michael jackson) - to the better name - the category is moved automatically. also we can limited who a new user(little than 10000 edits or lower). so i want ask from you: Does a tool like this exiest in en wikipedia? and in brfa they approved this code to running? thanks/:)Mahdi talk 18:28, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure what exactly your question is, so I'll try to address everything you're saying. 1.) Does a script like this already exist? Yes, pywikipediabot has category.py and it's the most often-used and well-supported. 2.) In a BRFA, we most likely a.) would not approve the script to run unless it was to implement the consensus of a WP:CFD decision; b.) since there are many bots approved to do such and there's no backlog, would question whether we need the redundancy. If I recall correctly, the last bot approved to do this was only approved because the others were down. — madman 02:49, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

Whitelist skipped?

I checked Idiocracy and got a hit from http://maps.thefullwiki.org/Idiocracy even though it is on the whitelist. I suspect the problem was related to several missing \ before dots in the list. --Lexein (talk) 09:58, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi

I mistakenly added information which i was using to reference a new article instead of the information I had written/ put together. Sorry. I will correct it — Preceding unsigned comment added by RedDreams (talkcontribs) 03:14, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

I am surprised by bot comment on the above article. I have not done any copy violation in this artcile. The text is taken from this source [3]. I was trying to fix the references from the official website reference given as external reference before the bot came out with a tag remark in the above article. MadmanBot

Thanks for letting me know! I've moved it to Labs and there might be some teething problems; when I have a moment, I'll put a Nagios monitor on it so I'll get e-mailed if it stops again. Cheers! — madman 05:51, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

CSB Whitelist

Hi Madman, should I be adding new sites to whitelist at User:CorenSearchBot/exclude or User:MadmanBot/exclude? I added one to both for now since I wasn't sure. Thanks, Legoktm (talk) 17:09, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Good question! Sorry that's not been clear. While I've added code to my copy of csb.pl to process User:CorenSearchBot/manual, I have not added analogous code for User:CorenSearchBot/exclude so adding sites to User:MadmanBot/exclude is necessary for now. I'm not predicting CorenSearchBot coming back anytime soon and I am planning for MadmanBot's task to continue indefinitely and increase in efficacy. Thanks! — madman 23:20, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
I've added a note to the top of CSB's version pointing people to the right place. You might also want to change the text of {{csb-pageincludes}} so it points to MadmanBot. Thanks, Legoktm (talk) 00:06, 23 October 2012 (UTC)
FYI Madman, I did update {{csb-pageincludes}} a long time ago to take an extra parameter and although it's only for VWBot it can easily be genericized to just take a bot/username and link to that specific page. Whatever changes are made there can and should likewise be made to {{Csb-pageincluded}} and {{Csb-wikipage}}. VernoWhitney (talk) 00:17, 23 October 2012 (UTC)

It's live!

Hi. I just wanted to drop you a short note to say thank you for all your hard word getting the info action reimplemented. As you can see, it now has UI exposure here on the English Wikipedia in the sidebar. :-) My hope is that as time passes, the action will continue to evolve into an even more helpful (and attractive!) resource for users. You've laid the groundwork for great things to come. Thank you! --MZMcBride (talk) 21:07, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your kind words! I've very much enjoyed my first foray into MediaWiki (core) development and I look forward to doing more in the future. Cheers! — madman 23:26, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

I think MadmanBot forgot to update this page. The users who were notified once were not notified twice and the next cycle hasn't been posted. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 13:54, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Damn. I moved the tasks to Labs but forgot to schedule them. Idiot mistake. I'll send out the second round of notifications shortly and post a new report. Obviously deadminning will have to be postponed for a few days. Thanks, — madman 17:19, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
No problem, when is the first notifications for December going to be sent out (if I'm correct, on the 8th)? That would push the desysopping process back about a week after December 1. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 19:30, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
No, first round of notifications go out the day the administrators are listed; they have no way to know they have otherwise. I just had to wait until I got home from work and could review the script. I typically schedule second notifications for a week before the first, or November 24th in this case. We're on time for December, it's just November that's run behind. Thanks! madman 20:59, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Too speedy

If I recall well (bot addition is gone), the bot added a speedy tag on a page I was manually editing. The speedy effect (delete happy admins) is too fast to react. Why not just write something on (my) talkpage, and wait? With me, the current sequence always leads to an irrepearable admin action (within seconds & no usable reply). -DePiep (talk) 22:55, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

Stupid bots we can do without. -DePiep (talk) 23:07, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
While adding a delay between user notification and page tagging may be a good idea, please note that the bot never adds speedy tags. Blame irresponsible admins for irresponsible admin actions. Thanks, — madman 04:07, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
I admit, that is correct. Still, it was distracting. I was invited to spend time on it, and after that react edit the speedy process proceeded. -DePiep (talk) 14:54, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
Post hoc, ergo propter hoc. Also, if you're referring to Talk:Extended periodic table/sandbox, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia to see why the bot tagged your article. It was (and still is) a licensing violation without proper attribution. Thanks, — madman 01:00, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

Aegires gardineri, your bot or you??

Wanted to just let you know that in the edit history of the article, the tag appears to have been placed by you yourself rather than your bot. I say that because I assume that your bot signs itself "MadmanBot", not just plain "Madman"? if it was the bot then the bot has a problem, because it is signing your name rather than its name, and that needs to be fixed. Thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 12:57, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello Madman, The new editor who put together that article told me a while ago that he was going off on a boat for 5 weeks and would be unreachable. Today I have attempted to cut out all of the copyright material from the article, a clean version can be found here, and I also left a note on the talk page. I know it has been almost a month, but if the article seems OK now maybe you could put the cleaned up version back onto the page for that article? Thanks, Invertzoo (talk) 12:52, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

I have done so. Thank you! — madman 21:56, 10 November 2012 (UTC)
You are very welcome; I am glad to have been helpful. That should cut down on the number of irrelevant messages you are getting on your talk page. :) Invertzoo (talk) 16:43, 11 November 2012 (UTC)
Haha, cheers. Also, to answer your question, I was the one who blanked Aegires gardineri with {{Copyvio}}; the bot will never place that tag. It's only to be used by a human reviewer when there's content that violates copyright but it's not an unambiguous case (it can be fixed, permission is plausible, etc.). Thanks! — madman 00:09, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

Saw you redacted the copyright violations I reverted, so, just so you know, an IP recently tried to re-insert some of that material. I'm telling you since I imagine you want to redact the three new edits that had the copyvio in them, and also because SPI's pretty backlogged right now, and there's a pretty good chance this IP is a sockpuppet of the page creator (who has a COI username), so it might be useful to have an administrator keeping an eye on the article. Wall Tax Road, Chennai

Hi Madman, Your bot has tagged Wall Tax Road, Chennai for copyright vio withing a minute the article was created. But the sentences were rephrased the next minute. You still call this a copyright violation??? I am surprised. Anyways, happy that reflexes of bots are faster than humans' :)--Challengethelimits (talk) 04:06, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

I do still call this a copyright violation, yes. At the very least, the History section of the article is still too structurally and substantially similar to the source. If you're willing to rewrite it, you can do so at Talk:Wall Tax Road, Chennai/Temp; if you'd rather it just be removed for now, I can take care of that for you too. Also, bots' reflexes will always be faster, but in this case the intent of the bot tagging the page immediately is so a new page patroller will be made aware of potential problems as soon as possible and may assist you in resolving them. Thanks! — madman 05:16, 13 November 2012 (UTC)
Thank you Madman. Will try to rephrase in talk page. Thanks for assistance. --Challengethelimits (talk) 09:10, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

One-off notification

Could your bot do a talk page post and email of these messages once I get the relevant lists together? The desire for an email makes your bot preferable to one of the random newsletter bots. MBisanz talk 18:40, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

Sure; I think it's reasonable to say this falls within the inactive administrators task. I'm finding it hard to parse that discussion; this e-mail would be sent to everyone within 30 days of the 3 year cutoff? — madman 00:55, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
Right now there is agreement that once the proposals close, there will be a 30 day window with notifications at day 1 and day 23 for people who will lose the right to request resysopping at the time the proposal passes. I'm hoping to get agreement on a general notification at days 1 and 23 of all desysopped admins so that we won't have to worry about each time an admin approaches two or three years of inactivity. Multiple sections on talk page

On User talk:SilkeM, two separate sections were created--both at once according to the history. One did not have a heading and the welcome message was not signed. The second section is the only one the bot should have created (though I suppose it could do both actions separately), and the welcome should have been signed.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 19:25, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

No, that's exactly what the code's supposed to do. My understanding is it was part of some A/B testing worked out with the Wikimedia Foundation (seeing if creating a new talk page with a welcome message would increase response rate, using different templates for newbies and established users, etc.) — madman 23:06, 16 November 2012 (UTC)
I suppose newcomers wouldn't know the difference but it looks weird to me when it's not signed.— Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 18:52, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

Timewasting bot tag

Apparently the wikipedia article Chapeau d'Espagne is a copyright violation of the wikipedia article Chapeau d'Espagne. Well there's a surprise.  Tigerboy1966  22:02, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

It's a known issue caused by MediaWiki and Yahoo! escaping article titles differently, and it's being worked on. Thanks for the report. — madman 23:07, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

Trying to Delete "First" Battle of Collierville

Good catch. I copied text in the original web page that I created for "1st Battle of Collierville" because I should have more properly titled it "First Battle of Collierville", which I did in the second version. Do you know how I can delete the first version? 42 Miss Inf

If you've been the only contributor to the article you can place the {{db-g7}} template on it to request deletion. Thanks! — madman 16:21, 19 November 2012 (UTC)

Automatically scanning AfC submissions for copyvios

Hi Madman,

Based on reviewing MadmanBot's contributions, it seems that it only patrols mainspace articles. Is there a way it could also patrol articles submitted via AfC? That would mean everything in Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/*. This would greatly help in detecting copyvios.

Thanks, Legoktm (talk) 07:48, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

I have not added this task to MadmanBot because it would conflict with The Earwig's bot, which is already approved for this task. Cheers, — madman 16:57, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
Wasn't aware of that. I'll bug him then, thanks. Legoktm (talk) 05:17, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

Rewriting Wall Tax Road, Chennai article

Hi Madman. Have tried a rewrite of the previous content of Wall Tax Road, Chennai article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wall_Tax_Road,_Chennai/Temp. Trust this is okay and acceptable. However, please go ahead with deleting should the rewrite still violate the copyright policy. Also please let me know if anything else needs to be done. Will keep adding more references in the coming days. Thanks for all the help. Rasnaboy (talk) 15:25, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

I have replaced the article with the rewrite. Thanks, — madman 17:06, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Inactive administrators (2)

Did the bot forget to do it's weekly update of second notifications? Regards, — Moe Epsilon 05:23, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Too much turkey, clearly. (It's been done now and inactive admins have still been given enough notice that it shouldn't delay the process.) Cheers, — madman 16:53, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Inactive administrators (3)

I've started Wikipedia:Inactive administrators/2013 so that the next round can be added. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 03:05, 28 November 2012 (UTC)

Rewriting Open Hardware and Design Alliance

Hi Madman. Same as above. :) I have rewritten https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Open_Hardware_and_Design_Alliance/Temp. Now I would like to know what's the next step. Is the text okay? If not what else has to be done? Thanks for your explanations and say hi to the bot. SilkeM (talk) 18:56, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

I have replaced the article with the rewrite (and said hi to MadmanBot). Thanks! madman 22:42, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Agelanthus

Thanks for your comment. There are different organizations involved in that list and I contacted one of them. Their response was that copying of the list sounded fair if they are cited in the way they suggest on their website, but that they couldn't tell how the remaining partners would react. I decided that since wikipedia is about articles and not about lists, I would reduce the list. Conceivably wikipedia does not require complete lists until such time as it can provide articles for most entries in the list.
As far as the creativity goes - the specific list is a revision that assigns species to a three star system. If a species has three stars it is deemed an accepted name, otherwise some doubt exists as to its integrity as species. So there is some creativity involved, though the extent to which that takes species lists from the public domain is indeed a problem.
Apparently they will review the terms of use by third parties, and I noted that more clarity on the issue would be welcome. JMK (talk) 09:02, 27 November 2012 (UTC)

My understanding is that per Morrissey v. Procter & Gamble, lists of species names and the like cannot be subject to copyright protection because there's only one way of expressing the idea. I'm not sure how the species names are determined comes into it as long as they are generally speaking in the public domain (I'm not sure I understand how they're determined either from your message). But IANAL, so please take your own counsel; I myself have no concerns with the article. Your willingness to follow up with the copyright holder and address any issues is much appreciated. Thanks! madman 22:25, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Your copyvio notice

Hi, re this notice: please indicate where I have failed to observe WP:SPLIT. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:02, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)First, if you didn't already realize, it was a bot notice, and may generate false positives. Your article creating edit appears proper, though you still need to add the appropriate split templates to both the sources and destination articles, which can be found at Wikipedia:SPLIT#Templates. (I don't what exactly triggered the notice, and the templates may have had nothing to do with it) Monty845 20:07, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
I did notice that it was a bot message, which is why I posted on the bot owner's talk page. I was about to put templates on the talk pages (which have confusing names: why does {{split to}} give information about the page tht content was split from?), and was in the process of doing that when I was messaged. It always annoys me when a bot is trigger-happy. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:12, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
I find the naming scheme of those templates confusing too, dunno how they ended up that way. Monty845 20:15, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Actually, my understanding is that when a split's attributed in an edit summary (in the history) the templates aren't necessarily needed. The bot does not, unfortunately, check to see if a split's attributed in an edit summary. I don't currently have approval to change the code; I have taken over this task from an inactive operator. But you can be sure that once I request said approval, one of the first things I'm going to do is add such a check. Thanks, — madman 22:18, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
