Eugenic feminism

[edit]

Hi! Shekcelestine let me know that the edits you made to the article on eugenic feminism were reverted by Onetwothreeip, who wrote that the ""Phases" of eugenic feminism do not seem substantiated by sources, and I also question why this was all added at once and developed in a sandbox rather than progressively being added into the article." and "Rewriting and removing non-feminist eugenicists and non-eugenic feminists". I wanted to review the edits with you and also hopefully shed some light on why they removed.

  • With the adding content progressively content, this is likely meant to ask why the material was added in such large portions. It's fine to develop work in a sandbox, but the work should be added little by little so it's easier to review what's been added as well as fix things if something goes wrong or needs heavy editing.
  • In an email with Shekcelestine, they said that one of the sources mentioned phases. Be careful of things that are covered in only one source, as they may not represent how the general academic and scholarly world views eugenic feminism. As such, I wouldn't apply the labels broadly unless you have multiple sources that discuss the topic in phases. Otherwise this puts undue weight on the one source that mentions this in phases, without it being the majority view.
  • I'm not entirely sure why some parts of content were removed as far as the second part goes, but here's my thoughts:
I have to assume that the reason that some of the people were removed entirely is because their role in eugenic feminism was unclear. Some of them, like Dugdale and Davenport, were influential during their time period but not because they were eugenic feminists, so how exactly they influenced eugenic feminism is vague. When it comes to Sanger, it looks like she participated in feminism and then eugenics, but I'm not sure if she was exactly a eugenic feminist. I think that the others may have fallen into the same area.
What I think would have been more effective here would be to focus on the timeline rather than individual people. Some of these individuals may have influenced the field, but perhaps not enough to really warrant a highlight, so it's often better to have something like this history overview at the feminism article.

Hopefully this can help explain some things as well as open up a discussion with the other editor over the removal. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:29, 10 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A page you started (Chronology of eugenic feminism in the United States) has been reviewed!

[edit]

Thanks for creating Chronology of eugenic feminism in the United States.

I have just reviewed the page, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

Thank you for your new article, "Chronology of eugenic feminism in the United States". You are probably aware that there was already an established Eugenic feminism article. Your new article needs to be integrated with, and connected to, that article. In fact, I am wondering why both articles are necessary and perhaps they could be merged. In any case, you should make some effort to entice readers of that older article to jump into your more detailed chronology.
