Locator maps of baronies of Northern Ireland
commons:Category:Locator maps of baronies of Northern Ireland exclude the boroughs of Belfast and Londonderry from the adjacent baronies. This was certainly not the case prior to the 1898; did this happen at some point after they acquired county borough status? I was under the impression that the authorities didn't bother updating the barony boundaries after they were administratively obsolete. the PRONI map has Derry straddling two baronies and does not show Belfast borough at all.jnestorius(talk) 11:52, 12 June 2013 (UTC)

- The boroughs fall under baronies as far as I am aware. I will accept that the map I based these on from PRONI does show what you could interpret as the outlines of a borough council in Londonderry, and no doubt Belfast barony is in reality the outline of the borough, though it is simply stated as being Belfast amongst a list of baronies at PRONI - yet I can't find evidence of an actual barony of Belfast on its own so that will need fixed.
- However regardless of that the boroughs fell under baronies as far as what I've seen, for example:
- Samuel Lewis's "A Topographical Dictionary of Ireland" from 1837 states clearly: "BELFAST, a sea-port, borough, market-town, and parish, partly in the barony of LOWER, but chiefly in that of UPPER BELFAST, county of ANTRIM, and province of ULSTER" - and this is from well before 1898.
- The Placenames of Ireland Database which provides the Irish names of places which the Irish government makes use of includes the city of Londonderry under a single barony (North-West Liberties), though it gives the townland as being in two baronies (North-West Liberties and Tirkeeran), which the city itself actually is. Though these aren't an example of the borough, the borough would be centered on the city and townland, and if it was a separate entity they wouldn't be listed as being under these baronies.
- Placenames NI for Belfast states "The centre of Belfast and the greater part of the modern city is west of the Lagan in the barony of Belfast Upper in Co. Antrim." and that is also stretches into the baronies Castlereagh Upper and Castlereagh Lower: [1], [2], Mabuska (talk) 10:58, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
