Translation

[edit]

You have translated the title of the movie Io sono Tony Scott, ovvero come l'Italia fece fuori il più grande clarinettista del jazz as "I am Tony Scott, or How Italy Got Rid of the Greatest Jazz Clarinetist". I'm not all that fluent in Italian, but I don't know that I would have translated fece fuori as "got rid of". I had chosen to translate it as "destroyed", but I don't know that that is any better. The phrase literally means "made outside"; I suspect that a better idiomatic translation would be "discarded" or "ignored". They didn't actually get rid of him; he lived the end of his life in Italy, no? Do you have any thoughts on a better translation? WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 17:02, 9 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The italian idiom fare fuori means to do somebody in, which, luckily, is not what happened to Tony Scott (although he lived in Sicily, LOL). I believe that the translation you originally proposed, to destroy, is the one that best conveys the idea behind the title; I decided to change it "I am Tony Scott. The Story of How Italy Got Rid of the Greatest Jazz Clarinetist" because it was the tile it had at the only screening it had in an English-speaking country, Canada (see [1]), and thus I assumed that would be a title the director/producer approved (or, anyway, the "official" English title). But I totally agree with you on "destroy"!!.--Ma Zhenguo (talk) 13:48, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
