Units conversion in infoboxes

I have found a bug in the conversion of metres to feet when used in the Infobx templace for a settlement.

If I enter elevation_m = 1500 it gives an answer of 4900 feet, which is wrong. If I enter 1500.0 if gives 4921.3 feet, which is correct. If I enter 1501 it gives 4924 which is correct.

I do not know how or where to report this problem. It will clearly need a specialist to resolve it somewhere in the Wikipedia template engine. MWchat (talk) 16:49, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MWchat, I'm Waggers. Thanks very much for raising this issue. I think the infoboxes in question use the Convert template, which by default rounds the resulting figure to a similar level of precision as the input - so a figure like 1500 metres (correct to the nearest 100 metres) becomes 4900 ft (correct to the nearest 100 feet). Similarly, 1500.0 becomes 4921.3 because it's correct to the nearest 0.1, and 1501 becomes 4924 because it's correct to the nearest whole number.

If you're certain that 1500 is the exact elevation then using 1500.0 is fine - but I suspect the 1500 figure is rounded to the nearest 100 metres, in which case our convention is to use similar rounding when converting to feet.

Many thanks for the information. In this case I was copying data from the text of the article to the Infobox, which gave the height as 4921 feet, so 1500.0 metres is correct. Unfortunately the derived template from Infobox Settlement on the page Mafikeng I was editing did not permit use of the elevation_ft variable so I hit this dilemma. I understand the sense of what the conversion is doing. What I found really hard, as a newish user, was how to track back to what was causing it. (I hunted for over an hour) Is there a function that showed the chain of embedded templates within templates in any given page I wonder?
