If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Copyright violations

You can't just upload images to Wikipedia that you find on the web and claim to own the copyright. Please do not add copyrighted material to Wikipedia without permission from the copyright holder. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Fair use, references, and other stuff

Good morning,

Thanks for the note you left on my talk page. I'm sorry that some of the other Wikipedians have been a bit brusque with you. I'm sure their intentions were good. Don't take it too personally. There are many aspects of Wikipedia that are complicated and there is quite a learning curve that goes along with it. I've been here for almost two years but there is still a lot that I haven't yet figured out. It takes time and patience. I try to be patient with other Wikipedians and usually they're patient with me in return, but not always. I guess it's not much different than real life in that regard.

In regards to "fair use" images: as far as I can tell, the images from those auto brochures could be used to illustrate articles about those specific automobiles, but you would need to make sure that all of the information is filled in when you upload the image. For example, the title of the brochure, the copyright date, the publisher ("Buick Motor Division, General Motors" for instance), the page number that the image came from, etc. And then you would need to make sure that you explained why the image meets the fair use criteria in the Description section of the image page.

There is still a good chance that an administrator or other Wikipedian might find the image objectionable and delete it, but it's worth a shot. I took a look at the fair use guidelines and my own personal interpretation is that the images from the auto brochures would be acceptable within those guidelines, as long as the image is only used to illustrate an article about that particular automobile, and as long as you can prove that there is absolutely no free or public domain image that you could use instead.

In regards to references: one of the policies of Wikipedia is that "original research" is not allowed. What this means is that you can't add information to articles based on your own research, or things that you have experienced firsthand. For instance, let's say that you own a 1977 Fleetwood and you know absolutely everything there is to know about that car. You still wouldn't be allowed to use that knowledge to add information to the Fleetwood article, because that would constitute original research. The information you add to the article has to be backed up by a reliable source -- for example, a book, a newspaper article, a magazine article, a reputable web site, etc -- and you have to "cite" that source by providing a reference (the name of the publication, the author, the publisher, the page number, etc.). The auto brochures you mentioned could be used as sources. As with the images taken from those brochures, you would need to provide the title of the brochure, the copyright or publication date, the author and/or publisher, the page number, etc.

I know this is a lot to take in all at once! Hopefully I haven't overwhelmed you too much. A lot of this stuff is still relatively new to me as well.

Be sure to take a look at the Welcome to Wikipedia page, which has links to all sorts of topics that are very helpful. Even though I've been here for almost two years, I still go back to the Welcome page on a regular basis when I'm not sure how to do something.

If this image was added incorrectly, or should not be allowed at all, please accept my apologies and/or explain what needs to be done to "correct" the issue(s). If it is completely wrong, then I'm wrong, period. It seems to me that "fair use" is used conveniently when certain people deem it necessary to use, otherwise it's "wrong"(???). Also, an image/logo I created on my own computer using a "general typeface" (a "NON-copyrighted" subject per Wiki standards) was deleted as well. Why is one "general typeface" logo deleted while others (Microsoft logo) are not???MJEH (talk) 23:41, 28 July 2008 (UTC)
