Detroiterbot temporarily blocked

Please note that I blocked the bot as it appears to be operated when {{converta}} was just listed on TfD. -- User:Docu

I had it swap out converta for convert before TfD'ing converta. It wasn't necessary to block it. —MJCdetroit (yak) 03:37, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
Can you roll them back? -- User:Docu
No. Is is standard to replace templates before listing them for TfD. Besides, you can accomplish the same thing with the original template {{convert}} anyway. —MJCdetroit (yak) 04:02, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
Looks rather like your ignoring Wikipedia:TfD#How to use this page (step 1 and step 3). Please abstain to use your bot for such operations. -- User:Docu
No, I've TfD'ed a template or two before. I marked the edit summary with TfD and it wasn't marked as minor. Step 3 says "please consider", which doesn't mean that you have to notify. However, I did notify at the discussion over at {{convert}}, in which you were already involved in. Looks like you, as the creator of that template, are just sour. I suggest a cup of coffee and a Paul Mall. —MJCdetroit (yak) 04:33, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
Step 1 mentions "noinclude" for templates meant to be substituted. Its purpose is to display the notice where the template is being used not just on template page itself -- after it was removed from everywhere. -- User:Docu
At this point are you just making shit up? It means the exact opposite of what you think it does. It says to wrap the "noinclude" around the {{tfd}}. This is so that every page that transcludes the TfD template won't show the notice and only the template page shows the notice. It's clear that you are trying to somehow wikilawyer this TfD and nit-pick my actions. Please don't bother responding/commenting on my talk page anymore. Just let the TfD discussion take care of this. —MJCdetroit (yak) 05:10, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

It just shows that you are ignoring systematically TfD policy and that you are using your bot to do so. If you feel your bot shouldn't be blocked, please ask another admin to review the bot's block. -- User:Docu

Pardon my French but, where the fuck are you getting this shit from? Are you drunk? Don't bother answering that because somehow the words on the page are not making a connection inside your brain. I did everything in accordance with TfD policy. Stay off my talk page and let the TfD sort this out. —MJCdetroit (yak) 05:43, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Shouldn't we wait for the outcome of TfD? Still, indefinite block is too harsh, changing for 24 hours. - Darwinek (talk) 21:13, 4 February 2008 (UTC)

Shusha infobox

Just wanted to let you know that CoA that you included in the infobox is not de-jure one, i.e. it was not adopted by the government of Azerbaijan, the country Shusha is de-jure part of. Grandmaster (talk) 06:05, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

I wasn't 100% sure, so I asked User:Khoikhoi to review the infobox. If you don't think it belongs or should be worded differently please do so. —MJCdetroit (yak) 12:37, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Templates

Hello. Just posting some useful links for future. [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]. Hope at least some of them can be merged. Cheers. - Darwinek (talk) 18:17, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, I am working on the  Ukraine right now and I think that I tried Afghanistan before. —MJCdetroit (yak) 18:29, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi could you see if you can tweak the turkmenistan locator template. I though it was working until I added Daşoguz. Thanks

P.S Pain in the ass bots aren't they. SOmebody insisted I use abot for French communes I set up User:BaldBot and after 1 day it gets disapproved again. They won;t even grant me automatic page patrols to articles I create evne though I create more articles than many admins put together! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 22:14, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

I'll look tomorrow :) —MJCdetroit (yak) 02:03, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Could you merge the tibetan chinese box to Tenzin Gyatso box so I can see how the paramters are added thanks ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:23, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Turkmenistan is fixed. The coordinates were off. Seems to be ok now. I'll see what I can do about the Tenzin thing. I haven't looked yet.—MJCdetroit (yak) 16:59, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Ah yes of course thanks buddy. I see you;ve been doing a great job with some of the Ukrainian settlements. I've sorted out a Madagascar map now anyway and the Template:Location map Mexico now has a new image which works. Much better than before ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:33, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Any idea why there is such a HUGE silver map for Saskatchewan? It looks pretty bad, See Paradise Hill, Saskatchewan. Would Image:Blank map Saskatchewan.svg work instead? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:50, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Check with User:Qyd, he's very good with all things Canada and the maps of Canada. The blank map looks like it was just created. Also, the user who created that Paradise Hill page was not doing things quite right anyway. —MJCdetroit (yak) 20:23, 15 February 2008 (UTC)

Peru

Somethings not right with Alerta. The pin is showing in the wrong region ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:18, 19 February 2008 (UTC) Its ok both english and spanish wikipedia had the wrong coordinates. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:21, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

There are two cities in Peru named Alerta; one in Ucyali and one in Madre de Dios Peru at 11°40'00S 69°14'00W. There maybe more cities named Alerta because Google Earth returned a bunch of possible hits. —MJCdetroit (yak) 16:27, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

Yes the other coordinates were for the other one. Could you switch Callao with a stabdard box. I've started going through them. Most have the standard boxes but there are one or two without. I;ve been replacing any red point maps I see anyway with the pin. Could you switch this box when you have a moment red and pink are pretty horrid looking! Cheers. I;ve noticed that most of the articles on Peruvian cities haven't got any population statistics. I think I;ll look to see if there is a government site later ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:00, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

I've recently created an article on Abdykalyk. All sources say it is in Osh Province but on all the maps on various sites despite stating it is Osh Province it shows it is in a different province to the north west. Any idea why? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 00:55, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Got me! I can't make heads or tails of it. You may get some answers from Wikipedia:WikiProject Central Asia. Someone over at Template talk:Infobox settlement was asking about your work with Tibet infoboxes (unless someone else is added infoboxes to Tibetan articles). —MJCdetroit (yak) 20:42, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Infobox help

Hey, could you maybe fix this template so the infobox ends up showing flags and shields properly? Some images are on the verge of being deleted, even though the infobox uses them apparently. I figured you have a lot of experience with this, so I came to you. Thanks in advance and take care, --Bolonium (talk) 00:36, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

It is done, but it maybe time to fold that infobox back into {{Infobox settlement}} instead of trying to maintain a double transclusion. It would be easier to maintain and have a smaller pre-expand/post-expand (can't remember which is it) size, if we were just to have a Serbia specific syntax that could be pasted into an article when needed. Similar to Template:Infobox settlement/doc/Macedonia. —MJCdetroit (yak) 01:54, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Deleted Template

Why did you delete this template ...????? The-real-zeus (talk) 14:11, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

It was a recreation of an already deleted template. Here's the TfD: Log/2008_February_11#Template:Greece_Squad_Euro_2004. Perhaps you can talk with the other nominators for an alternative template to use. —MJCdetroit (yak) 14:49, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

Locked out

G'day MJC. Recently, an admin decided to place {{Infobox German Location}} under full protection. This is understandable since it is very widely used - some protection for {{Infobox Former Country}} wouldn't be bad either - but now I can't maintain the template any more since I'm not an admin. I had a look at Wikipedia:Protection policy and couldn't find any way for a non-admin to modify fully-protected pages, even if that non-admin created the page in the first place. Is that correct? If so, maybe I should apply for adminship. - 52 Pickup (deal) 12:52, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

I'd be more than happy to nominate you; just let me know and I'll start the ball rolling. Adminship is kind of like owning a gun; it's not that big of a deal when it is in the hands of a responsible person. And you have more than passed any background check that will be needed for adminship. It's just another tool to help you out; use it when you need to.
Also, if there is an immediate need to edit IGL let me (or User:Darwinek; he's Centeral Europe too) know and I'll unlock it. I'll be around for the next 7 hours or so; I'm at work right now. —MJCdetroit (yak) 14:19, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, mate. If you reckon that I could pass RfA, then I'd be delighted to be nominated. I've never really considered being an admin as an exercise in power, but there have been an increasing number of things coming up lately where I need an admin's help - usually real minor stuff that I could easily do myself if I had permission. No need to modify IGL right now, though. - 52 Pickup (deal) 14:31, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
I was swamped at work today so I didn't get any real free time today, but I'll get to it tomorrow. I'll keep you posted. —MJCdetroit (yak) 21:43, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
No worries. Take your time. - 52 Pickup (deal) 06:57, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Wow! Thanks for the incredibly kind write-up in your nomination. After reading it, I'd vote for me, too :) 52 Pickup (deal) 19:27, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

The important part is that it doesn't contain any bullshit. However, you do have to answer Qs 1-3. Hopefully, those will be the only questions you'll be asked. Some people like to play "stump the chump" with optional questions in RfAs I'll post it after you've answered those questions and I've added the parts about your edit count. —MJCdetroit (yak) 19:44, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Flag templates

Hello MJCdetroit, I noticed that you had recently created some flag templates for infobox usage, and I was bold and speedy deleted them, so I thought I should explain why! If you strongly object, we can continue the discussion. Basically, the situation is thus: through the work done by WP:WikiProject Flag Template, the standard {{flag}} can be used to render thousands of different flags. Additionally, there exist some "shortcut" templates that use standard ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country codes for the template names. For example, {{USA}} is merely a wrapper for {{flag|United States}} since it is used so frequently. Now, the consensus we have is to maintain the "shortcut" set of templates for those standard country codes only. The maintenance of those templates spirals out of control once non-standard codes are used for other entities, as has happened in the past. Now, with respect to sub-national entities, there are a set of templates used for Canadian provinces (e.g. {{ON}}), and some for Belgium, but we are discouraging creation of new shortcut templates for states/provinces/regions/etc. of other countries, where those shortcut templates do not already exist. Therefore, we'd rather see {{flag|Michigan}} than {{MICH}}, for example. Please let me know if you are ok with this or if we need to revisit that consensus. Thanks — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 23:55, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

If that's the consensus, I won't fight you on it. —MJCdetroit (yak) 02:50, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for placing an infobox in the Shobhabazar page. I am using the infobox for other neighbourhood pages (Shyambazar, Bagbazar, Entally etc.) also. Regards. - P.K.Niyogi (talk) 09:14, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

You're welcome. I just realized that I used the "wrong" dialect. Therefore, I just when back and changed neighborhood (American English) to neighbourhood (British Imperial English). Good luck. —MJCdetroit (yak) 13:09, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, mate!

This one's on me!

Thank you so very much for your successful nomination for me to become an admin. Your support and kind words were most appreciated. I hope to be able to continue helping out where I can. So if there's anything that you reckon needs my attention, please let me know. In the meantime, here's that beer. Prost! - 52 Pickup (deal) 21:10, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Location map

Hello. Is there any possibility to enter various sets of coordinates = to show more dots on the map, using {{Location map}}? Thanks. - Darwinek (talk) 20:23, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

I don't know. If it's not it would be a cool thing to have. I see what I can find out. —MJCdetroit (yak) 01:57, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
Looks like someone answered your question over at Template talk:Location map. I will have to keep that in mind in the future. —MJCdetroit (yak) 02:00, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

I think it's correct now and I don't think that I short-dicked any Belgians cannibal on the Congo (another great line from this movie). —MJCdetroit (yak) 01:36, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Swaziland

Hey don't take the mickey out of Belgians -Blofeld is from Bruges lol. I've just created Template:Location map Swaziland‎ but in creating infobox for Big Bend, Swaziland (no jokes) it looks like it needs a tweak. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 20:59, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

I will take a look at it tomorrow. I won't be getting home until late and I've got a bunch of snow to shovel when I do get home. Winter is never ending... —MJCdetroit (yak) 21:13, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Take a look now. It looks right to me, but I didn't open the big bend page before I corrected the coordinates. —MJCdetroit (yak) 17:40, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, I guess I missed the part about Western Sahara. I assume it is running ok? I can readjust it tomorrow, if needed. —MJCdetroit (yak) 01:46, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Oh we have a new map for Western Sahara now with new digits so that was fine -thats why I removed the message.

Euro cinema template

One thing though it has been agreed by consensus that the Template:European cinema should be shrunk like the Template:Tibetan Buddhism one. Ironically I created the latter but I can't seem to get the shrinkable option to work on the european cinema template. Do you know how to get it to default collapse? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 11:17, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Took me a little while, but I figured out that there seemed to be an extra line of code in there. I made the changes. —MJCdetroit (yak) 15:28, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Slovenia

Thats great but I noticed there is still the nocinlude text .e.g see Cinema of Yugoslavia and there is an out of box wording at the top left -perhaps there was one <no inlcude> too many. Any I've been doing a bit of work on SLovenia. Celje has more info on demographics than I usually come across which I don't want to remove when I add a formal box -could you convert it to the formal infox settlement so I can copy the parameters for the others. It should include both the municipal map and the location map slovenia pin Cheers ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 22:46, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you mean by: "there is an out of box wording at the top left -". I fixed part of it and it looks ok on my mac with FF.
I'll see what I can do tomorrow with Celje. Regards, —MJCdetroit (yak) 01:43, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Thanks I can see you haven't got much time for editing at present. It looks pretty complicated that infobox. Some of the data on households, student etc is likely to go out of date very quickly. Do you think anybody would object if I simplified the infoboxes. Of course I wouldn't touch the Celje one now but I'm thinking what would be best ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 18:56, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

I was thinking that stuff would be better said in the text. Either way, there is two ways for you to find out—ask first or just do it and fix it later if an objection occurs.

Bot question

Hello. I would like to ask you if you can use your bot in geographical articles. Problem is following: There are many references used in many articles about U.S. towns but the References section is missing, see e.g. Gillsville, Georgia. Could Detroiterbot add == References == {{reflist}} to articles which need it? Thanks. - Darwinek (talk) 21:57, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

It is not technically tasked to do that at the moment and I don't think that I will have any time in the near future to tweak it to run correctly. Sorry. :( I basically have been super busy lately (if you can't tell by my contrib count being down). Try User:Smackbot or User:Metsbot. Sorry D, —MJCdetroit (yak) 17:54, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Imperial units

Hi--can I ask why you reverted all of my edits on the Canada section of the Imperial units article (here)? You even reverted some links that were added by someone else and correctly rerouted by me (which I hardly think are controversial edits). I think I added some very useful content to that section and reorganized it to make it read better, not to mention some needed fixes to grammar (again, not controversial). I don't think it deserved wholesale reversion (with the exception of a single internal link?), if that was your intention. Cheers! - Gump Stump (talk) 23:54, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

You're right. I meant to only revert the part about Canadian radio stations near the border and the part about "car parks". I've never heard "car park" used in Ontario; maybe it is different in the Atlantic provinces, but it seemed a very British term. I rewrote the section based on your edit and threw in an additional reference. —MJCdetroit (yak) 03:28, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Could you try to find the coordinates for Template:Location map Japan - it isn't working with the new map I added ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 19:14, 28 March 2008 (UTC)

I reverted your edit on Wilkins Sound. WP:MOSNUM only says that the use of "sq mi" instead of "mi²" is acceptable, not that it is mandatory. Not only, that but since a corresponding metric measurement is given (indeed, the metric is the original measurement in this case) uniform use of exponents seems to me to be more appropriate. Caerwine Caer’s whines 02:22, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

This was opposite of what the MOSNUM said until a few days ago when it was changed without consensus to do so. When we wrote the mosnum we choose to have metric be superscripted always and never sq km and we choose to have imperial units always be abbreviated sq mi or cu mi and never mi² or mi³. We did this to contrast the two systems. I am going to undo the changes of 17th to the original statement. —MJCdetroit (yak) 02:44, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
Seems like a very silly contrast to make to me, especially when as in this case, a supporting image (Image:20080325 wilkins figure2.jpg) uses the exponential form. I can see the sense of allowing "sq mi" where it is the original unit used for an exact measurement, though the traditionalist in me grumbles that it should be "sq. mi.". The modern practice of dropping periods from abbreviations does not sit well with me, as is evident from the lead item on my list of current activities on my user page: "Defending the U.S. against the forces of US-ism." Caerwine Caer’s whines 05:13, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
