MartinBot Question

Hello,

I have a question about your bot. I am asking about the edit summary. It used to have an edit summary of this: BOT-rv edits by vandal to last version by wikipedian. And now, it's reverted edits by vandal to last version by wikipedian (automatic bot revert). So why did it change? Please reply on my talk page. Thank you.--Willy, your mate 09:51, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Someone asked me to do it, with good reasons which I can't remember now. Martinp23 23:03, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

About My last edit- Royal Central College Polonnaruwa

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Central_College and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polonnaruwa_Royal_Central_College

are refering to a same place. I tried to delete the latter and keep the former since it has beein linked to the "Schools in Sri Lanka" and in the page "pollonnaruwa" under present situation " Royal central collge". Appriciate if one experence user could fix this duplication. I tried by deleting the later but was blocked. Saman SL(Saman SL 13:47, 25 July 2007 (UTC))

Ahh - only administrators can delete pages. The best recourse in this situation would have been to redirect the pages together, which has now been done. Thanks, Martinp23 23:05, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Intro/sandbox bot reset

Howdy, I was wondering whether it was possible to get MartinBotIV back in action?

(I'm not sure if you're back or not (per the tags at the top of this talkpage), but I've left a query at Wikipedia:Bot requests#Wikipedia:Introduction in case you're not :) Much thanks. --Quiddity 21:29, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

There was a problem with the code - I know the problem, and will be able to fix it tomorrow. Sorry for the delay - I have been completely away from the internet for the past week, otherwise the problem (the solution to which I knew just before I left) would have been long fixed... MartinBotIV planned on being brought back to action? If not I have a bot ready to go that I can BRFA.

Tiny little additions caused Martin to see vandalism

My dear MartinBot. I love your work. You've saved me personally tons of time, getting to the page before I did. However, today while I was just watching AIV, I noticed users being repeatedly reported by another editor, and it was always invalid. So I went to look into the issue, and discovered that this editor was just seeing your previous reverts, and not checking the actual edit in question, and reverting valid edits as vandalism. I will illustrate several differences:

MartinBot reverted this edit. This was a valid edit, the user was adding an "N/A" (not applicable) notation to tables, using a dash. It not only is not vandalism, but it helps the overall appearance of the table.

Then, another user just saw you had reverted, didn't bother to check, and reverted, warning the editor yet again of vandalism.

Then, again on this page. Again the user was warned he was vandalizing, but he was simply adding the dash into tables for readability.

A third example can be found here. By now, the poor editor in question has three warnings, and threats of being blocked, all for his helpful additions. This concerns me as, as I truly hate to see users be chastised. I accept that the bot is not infallible, and I also realize that the other editor did not take the time to look through and see if the bot made a mistake before warning, but I'd like to bring it to your attention so perhaps you can look into the issue.

Now, I did take the time to go through the user's edit history, examine each edit, and each different revision, and earlier on, it seemed he'd accidentally put his dashes in the wrong column, and it removed formatting from the table, which you removed. Granted, that's a valid reversion, but it seems then he was placed perhaps on some "blacklist" of yours, and you've reverted all his subsequent edits. He's genuinely trying, and indeed, he seems to have a pretty advanced grasp of table script, and Wikipedia, I believe he just made a simple error. If you indeed have a "blacklist" of some sort, I'd request that you remove this editor, as he does genuinely seem to be helping, as well as know what he's doing.

Most respectfully, with gratitude, ArielGold 19:30, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

Just FYI, there is a "whitelist" rather than a blacklist... Cant find the info for it atm tho Reedy Boy 20:24, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
Ahh, well, I'm sure white listed editors are registered, and this is an IP, so it probably wouldn't apply. No biggie. If there's a way that MartinBot can improve through little issues like this, and reports, that's cool, if not, we'll just have to hope that RC folks are more careful and remember, MartinBot is only 98% right. Hee hee. ArielGold 20:31, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
Well, it has both black and white lists :). Sometimes massive repetition can trigger the bot - often this catches vandalism, but there is the occasional false positive. Thanks for reporting, Martinp23 23:11, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Vandalism

Your bot found and reverted some vandalism that originated in my home. When I received the warning, I was shocked, embarrassed and dismayed. Looking through the edits, I saw some coarse, vulgar verbiage that I would not want to see or have published on wikipedia.

We believe that the source of the vandalism was a vistor in our home, and we have instructed the person whose guest it was not to allow this individual to use the computers when visiting our home any more.

I appreciate the wikipedia community and respect the guidelines. I am sorry that this vandalism occurred and I do not believe that it will happen again.

Usage of MartinBot on other wikis?

Would it be possible for me to use MartinBot on another wiki, and if so, how would I go about that? If not, are you aware of any other anti-vandalism bots out there that I could try? I administer BearWiki[1], and early this morning (while I was still asleep), a vandal hit almost half the pages on the site. Another admin eventually stopped them, but it'd be nice to have a bot there to help protect the site. -- Rei 16:20, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

It is prohibitively difficult to make MartinBot work on other wikis, unfortunately - sorry I can't help. Martinp23 23:13, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Bot help

Hi Martinp23, could you take a look at User:HermesBot/Source. The source is horrible and not finish because I'm stuck on a few things and was wondering if you could take a look at it. The purpose of the bot is to tag images with no information (text) on the page. If their is any text the bot is suppose to skip the image to avoid any kinds of errors. My first problem is with regexes. The extremely simple [a-z] and [A-Z] regexes could be used and if anything matches, it skips. Right now it's (i.text.Contains("[a-z]")), which doesn't work because it only looks for [a-z], not the actual regex. However I'm not sure how to get it to be a regex. My next problem is i.text = i.text.Replace("", @"{{Di-no source|date={{SUBST:CURRENTDAY}} {{SUBST:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{SUBST:CURRENTYEAR}}}}"); . You can't pass the string "" empty, so I would need to append this. However when I tried to append it I got a bunch of problems. I'm still stuck on that. My third problem is something I haven't tried because I'm not entirely sure how to do it. The {{Di-no source}} has a template on their to notify the uploader with. I don't know how to grab the user's talk page and add the template if it's needed. Hopefully you will be able to help me out :-). Thanks! ~ Wikihermit 17:13, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

            if ((i.text.Contains("[a-z]")) || (i.text.Contains("[A-Z]")))
                pl.Remove(i.text);
            else
                i.text = i.text.Replace("", @"{{Di-no source|date={{SUBST:CURRENTDAY}} {{SUBST:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{SUBST:CURRENTYEAR}}}}");

To

            if (i.text.Trim() != "")
                pl.Remove(i.text);
            else
                i.text = "{{Di-no source|date={{SUBST:CURRENTDAY}} {{SUBST:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{SUBST:CURRENTYEAR}}}}";{{SUBST:CURRENTYEAR}}}}");

That solves the first 2 problems ;) Reedy Boy 21:37, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

I've added a way to notify the user, well, the last editor of the page. Chances are, if its been uploaded with no text, the last contributer, would be the only contributer... So you can tell them... Reedy Boy 22:11, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
Two minor problems. One is that it's missing a { bracket on both sides. My simple mind thought to add the two missing brackets on p.text += String.Format(@"{{subst:di-no source-notice|1={0}}} ~~~~", title); and the terminal gave me:
Loading 11 pages...
Page "User talk:Drewster-34" loaded successfully.

Unhandled Exception: System.FormatException: Input string was not in a correct f
ormat.

   at MyBot.TellUser(String user, String title) in c:\CBot1\image.cs:line 38
   at MyBot.Main() in c:\CBot1\image.cs:line 29
Also, the {{subst:di-no source-notice|1={0}}} doesn't work in another way. It adds the Image prefix when notifying the uploader. So it does Image:Image:Example.jpg instead. Thanks! ~ Wikihermit 01:37, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

If it's not flagging the edits already, you may want to consider adding this to MartinBot. Should be remarkably easy to do with a regex. Shadow1 (talk) 17:35, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

StatusBot

About a week ago, I added the StatusBot category to a few userpages of members of BAG, for the purpose of adding the {{ustatus}} template to the list on WP:BAG. Some users have disagreed with this, so I am going through the user talk pages of people I added the category to. Would you mind keeping the category, or would you prefer it to be removed? If you want it removed, you may either delete your subpage of User:StatusBot/Status, in this case, User:StatusBot/Status/Martinp23, and remove the category from your userpage. This will hide the ustatus template and stop it being re-activated. Thanks! Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 01:27, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Suggestion/Request: Month header

I would love to see MartinBot add the appropriate Month header to his new warnings. What commonly happens is that his warnings for users who have not been here in a while, are placed under the old header (if one is present), and then users assume his warnings were for the month it is under, (granted, they should check, but...) Also, some plug ins such as Twinkle, etc., add the proper month header when it is not present, so those are placed under Martin's warnings, effectively giving the impression that Martin's warnings were previous to that month. ClueBot does the month header, so I would love to see MartinBot be able to implement that feature as well. Thanks for listening! ArielGold 16:29, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

horse article

Why would you revert sourced, relevant, and well written information? Whatever happened to "be bold" and "not censered"? Donny417 20:06, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

no problem :) thank you, Donny417 20:13, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
FYI, Donny has been trolling and edit warring at Talk:Arabian horse over the same issue. Having failed to gain acceptance there, he's branching out. Despite his claim that he's trying to "improve the article", he's entirely focused on the Pinyan incident. Acroterion (talk) 20:18, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
That is frankly not true. I am simply trying to call attention to a trend that has very much to do with horses. I don't know why I'm getting so much heat over a good faith edit??? Acroterion needs to read about how 'not' to bite the newbies! I compromised and found a more general article than Arabian "breed" horses...what is wrong with that? Donny417 20:21, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
Claiming WP:BITE is generally something for other people to do on your behalf - your doing it only shows that you are trying to exploit the policy, at least to an extent. As I have told you already, I feel that the material is irrelevant, and I think it could just go in Zoophilia. It seems that you hav been reverted before voer this issue, so now is the time to stop and pursue dispute resolution, before you exhaust somebody's patience. Thanks, Martinp23 20:31, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
Donnie's edit history shows a single focus on the Pinyan incident; having failed to recruit Exploding Boy to get it included in Arabian horse, he appears to be trying here. He's crossed the line a few times on WP:CIVIL, WP:POINT and WP:3RR, and been warned by FisherQueen. The "trend" is simply a personal fascination. Acroterion (talk) 20:26, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
I bet you have a source to verify the "personal fascination right? Btw, I have NEVER reverted more than twice, I'm perfectly civil, and I don't care about making a point, I just wish to edit per wikipedia guidelines which you insist on me being not allowed to do just that. Donny417 20:32, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
Your edit history pretty much speaks for itself. As for 3RR, you were editing as an IP, then moved to your account when the Arabian horse page was semi-protected. Using IP's to evade 3RR isn't acceptable. You've edited against consensus, which is not a Wikipedia guideline. Acroterion (talk) 20:38, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
Might I suggest to run a checkuser before you "assume" it was me??? I admit that I have forgot to sign in a couple of times, and had to sign in, go back, and leave a signature. However, I guarantee, if you use a checkuser, my username has never been associated with an IP address that was reverting edits. See, this is what I'm talking about, you have a real problem with accepting and/or producing verifiable information. Donny417 20:40, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
We can do that. And I agree with your comment below. Acroterion (talk) 20:44, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

Bot's broken

Looks like you're not around, so I indef blocked the bot, as it appears to be broken. When you get back, drop me a note. I'm not that thrilled with the idea of bots being left running unsupervised when the owner is off on indefinite wikibreak. A responsible bot owner needs to be available to take care of business if something bad happens. AKRadeckiSpeaketh 01:22, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Which bot? Martinp23 15:58, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

I was going to say the same thing about MartinBot, but you seem to be on top of the situation. Best, IronGargoyle 16:55, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Yeah - sorry about the revert. I've fixed the bug which caused the bot to be blocked in the first place, but it doesn't seem to want to use its good/bad user lists now, which is a new one to me. I'm trying to recreate the databases now. Martinp23 16:58, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

would it be possible to give it a more friendly revert message? i think a bot should not shout at humans. -- 17:44, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

I was caught out by MartinBot as well. I reverted some vandalism by 82.29.134.14 to Glenn Miller in which text had been deleted - the second time the page has been vandalised by this user today. I then received a message from the bot telling me that my edit had been reverted as possible vandalism. What should I do about this? Can I undo the edit myself or should I leave it for someone else? Paul20070 17:52, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Martinbot malfunction?

I just reverted an article being blanked and replaced with "Bull S***", and Cluebot reverted it back to that edit, and warned me. Is this natural? YamakiriTC 09-30-2007•18:03:02 —Preceding signed but undated comment was added at 18:03, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Mind if I revert or delete the message? Will it still give me a higher warning since it did this time if the same thing happenes again? YamakiriTC 09-30-2007•18:12:26

MartinBot still borken

Big Red Switch again

Poor old MartinBot seems to have gone off the rails again, so I blocked him. Please unblock him when he's well again. Angus McLellan (Talk) 18:11, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

In which case, I am going to revert the vandalism again. Just thought I should say something here first though. Cheers Paul20070 18:18, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Martinbot

I reverted Vandalism and your bot reverted it back. See this. And I 'm gonna delete the bot's waring on my talk page. Oda Mari (talk) 18:19, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Autotagging

Hi, I have a question. I recently started WP:LFC and have a question. I noticed you have a bot which is related to WikiProjects and tagging so I was hoping you might be able to advise me. We have a lot of pages which are in the Category:Liverpool F.C. and it's subcategories. As part of the wikiproject all these articles should have {{Football|England=yes|Liverpool=yes|importance=|class=}} on their talk pages. I have started doing this manually but it is taking a lot of time. As there are hundreds of articles this would apply to is this something your bot, or a bot you know of, can do? My recent RfA

Thank you for supporting my RfA, which unfortunately didn't succeed. The majority of the opposes stated that I needed more experience in the main namespace and Wikipedia namespace, so that is what I will do. I will go for another RfA in two month's time and I hope you will be able to support me then as well. If you have any other comments for me or wish to be notified when I go for another RfA, please leave them on my talk page. If you wish to nominate me for my next RfA, please wait until it has been two months. Thanks again for participating in my RfA! -- Cobi(t|c|b|cn) 02:08, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Template:HD Archive header monthly

Hi, I just noticed that a template you created, Template:HD Archive header monthly, is unused and appears to be abandoned. I've marked it as deprecated, meaning it'll be deleted in two weeks' time if nobody objects. If there's a reason to keep it please leave a note at Wikipedia talk:Deprecated and orphaned templates. Thanks. Bryan Derksen 03:06, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Oh, never mind, on followup I see that this template is always substed when used and so appeared falsely orphaned. I've added a note to the template page to that effect. If you know of any other always-substed templates like this one perhaps you could go around and add some notes to those as well to be on the safe side? Bryan Derksen 03:12, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
There's one for the refdesks themselves - something like Template:Archive header monthly. Out of interest, how did you discover this one? Martinp23 16:56, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
{{HD Archive header}}, {{HD Archive header monthly}}, {{RD Archive header}}, {{RD Archive header monthly}}. There are other, older RD header templates that are truly depreciated, however in most of those cases it's necessary to retain them, as they contain the original histories of the code used in the current templates, and as such are needed in the event of major debugging of the active templates.--VectorPotentialTalk 23:11, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Request concerning NewPage Watcher

I use NewPage watcher and I thought to myself that a great improvement for the program could be the ability to type in the articles that you want to access and load them that way as well, so that it's not only a newpage watcher, it can also be used to tag articles that aren't quite new but nonetheless need tags. I have noticed that NPW is a great tool for tagging articles for various reasons new or not new. I would also like to suggest a few new buttons for new tags be added as well. Perhaps a "POV" tag. I wanted some input on this. I also noticed that when I load NPW, prior to looging in I can see "Images" and "Prod" tabs. What are these for and why do they disappear after I log in? Could NPW be used also for tagging new images? Wikidudeman (talk) 17:31, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Sunder King

Hi, I have just noticed that Sunder King got blocked. As far as I could tell from his edits he was a decent editor. How come he got blocked? The template on his userpage says refer to checkuser for evidence. It took me a while to figure out how to find the Molag Bal archive (as there are no clear instructions on how to do this on the checkuser page), a look at the page history tells me that no new evidence has been added since September 2007 and there is nothing on there relating to Sunder King. The Sunder King talk page has been redirected to his user page and protected, so it is impossible to have any debate about it there. This looks extremely dodgy to me, even if he is this guy Molag Bal, surely blocking people should be more transparent and less misleading. What do you think? King of the NorthEast 21:21, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

I've come here to say the same thing. Can you please tell me who did the checkuser for you? Theresa Knott | The otter sank 21:51, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

NPW

Hello, I was wondering if you had the actual C# visual 2005 project from the creation of NewPageWatcher. I wanted to make a tool similar to NPW but with other features and I thought that a good place to start might be with NPW itself. I'm not sure if It would ever be public for common use but I at least wanted to get an idea of the workings of it since I'm fairly new to Visual C#. Thanks. Hi, I remembered that you blocked user:The sunder king as a sockpuppet of Molag Bal even though he had a track record of good edits, so maybe you might want to look into this hoax article created by a user from Sunderland with a track record of good edits (similar to sunder king's modus operandi), Regards, King of the NorthEast 02:12, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
