Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, MCSimps, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Ian and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

Comparison of Wiki Articles about Carl Woese and Rita Colwell

[edit]

The first noticeable difference was the difference in amount of information, there is a lot more information about Carl Woese than Rita Colwell. The article on Woese briefly discusses his life and education, work and discoveries, perspectives on biology, and honors and his scientific legacy. There is also a lot more specific information about him than on Colwell. The article on Colwell only briefly covers her career and a few specifics about her. Colwell's article seemed to be more of a list of things she has accomplished rather than a discussion of what she contributed to. There is also a difference in the amount of references used in each article, Colwell has only six references, and Woese has 42 references. Both articles were short, easy to read and understand, with several links within the text, and an unbiased writing style. But the article on Woese was of a better written quality compared to the article on Colwell based on syntax and rhythm of the writing. The article on Colwell seemed to be written more childish manner, with very short and simple sentences and the repetition if the same sentence starter in secession within the same paragraph. Overall both articles were informative, but the one about Colwell could use some editing and more specific information about her contributions to science.MCSimps (talk) 20:37, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Katrina Edwards. I noticed that when you added the image to the infobox, you added it as a thumbnail. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks! Thank you for your help, I will keep this in mind the next time I add an image! --MCSimps (talk) 16:33, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
