Placentia

[edit]

Hi; I have noticed you removed a good portion of the article attributed to Placentia. Please when you edit articles; explain the reason for doing so. This will certainly go a long way to prevent edit wars. HJKeats 00:56, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I removed a good chunk of the Placentia article as it was a word for word duplication of the first part of the article-in other words the same paragraphs were put in the article twice. Mícheál 01:11, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't take the time to compare the edits, just noticed the large of amount of text removed. Interesting that wasn't picked up by prior editors, Good work Mícheál... HJKeats 01:20, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No problem-thanks for the message-I should have made a mention on the talk page about what I was doing either way-I've just added one :) Mícheál 01:38, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Newfoundland and Labrador WikiProject

[edit]

There’s now a WikiProject for Newfoundland and Labrador. We hope you’ll join us in making Wikipedia a great source of information about the province and its people. OzLawyer 17:54, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A new article SS Florizel of Newfoundland and Labrador context has been created and we invite you to contribute to the article to firstly get it up to DYK status and hopefully to feature article status. The article is about a bit of Newfoundland's marine history and the sinking of the SS Florizel and it’s many passengers including a little girl Betty Munn. If you have any knowledge of the subject please pitch in add/edit and if not specific knowledge of the article if you could help by generating articles on any of the red-ink (wikified) topics, would be great. Thanks so much to help on this article. As a suggestion, maybe every Monday we could offer up a new topic to collaborate on and then pool our talents on that one. Oh and BTW did you catch the article that OzLawyer create on the Newfoundland Tricolour that made it to the Did you know? column on 5 July, 2006.! HJKeats 23:24, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

redirecting

[edit]

Please stop redirecting Newfoundland to Newfoundland (island). Instead, fix links to "Newfoundland" to Newfoundland (island) if that is what they are intended to link to. The province is undoubtedly the thing people most intend on seeing when they enter "Newfoundland" into the text box, and so that is what Newfoundland should redirect to. Lexicon (talk) 17:19, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There was a discussion, and several people said it was correct to change the redirect. You are partially correct, when people say "Newfoundland", they mean several things, but prior to "Newfoundland and Labrador" they would have meant the province of "Newfoundland" and before that the "Dominion of Newfoundland". Labrador obviously doesn't redirect to "Newfoundland and Labrador" because nobody would search for "Labrador" to find the province. That is not, however, the case for "Newfoundland". I am not the only one who supports the redirect. Lexicon (talk) 17:42, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
How about instead of continually reverting, you discuss the issue as I did before making the original change? That's usually how we like to do things around here. Lexicon (talk) 17:58, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
When people say "Newfoundland" they very often mean the political entity that has gone by that name. As I said, prior to the province (which has only recently been renamed "Newfoundland and Labrador" officially), there was a Dominion, and before that a Colony. You also are acting as though only Newfoundlanders will be searching for "Newfoundland" which is a ridiculous notion. I'm sure a great many non-Newfoundlanders are looking the term up, and their intentions are as important as any Newfoundlander's. Many of those people are not aware that the province is officially called "Newfoundland and Labrador", and even those who do might simply type in the "short form" (as the province is often still referred to as "Newfoundland"). This is a worldwide encyclopedia, so we have to cater to a worldwide audience. As for your argument that we shouldn't treat searches for "Newfoundland" and "Labrador" differently based on, I guess, some sort of "things should be consistent" idea, yes, we damn well should treat them differently. "Labrador" has never been the name of a colony, Dominion, or province. "Newfoundland" has. Nobody is going to search for "Labrador" to find "Newfoundland and Labrador", while a very significant number of people who search for "Newfoundland" will intend exactly that. We work on what people expect, not what we might like people to expect. I got the views of others before I made the change. If you were courteous, you'd do the same thing. Lexicon (talk) 18:18, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've added a section heading for this discussion on the Newfoundland (island) discussion page. Vulcan's Forge 18:24, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Commons Photos

[edit]

I have just spend one weeks vacation on the west coast of Newfoundland and photographed quite a bit of the small coastal towns, post offices, lakes and Long Range Mountains. I have started adding the photos to the article List of communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, you can link there from our Wiki article by the same name. I will be adding more later and feel free to use them while expanding the communities articles WayneRay 14:16, 14 August 2007 (UTC)WayneRay[reply]
