Disambiguation link notification for August 14
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Lupinus saxosus, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Howell. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Glad to See You Back
[edit]I worried when your previous account was not editing that you'd given up on Wiki editing. Glad to see you back. Also: I did a lupin page because you inspired me, Lupinus caudatus. It is another one that ranges from Colorado to Washington so I hope you like it. Or if it is missing something I hope you might add it. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 04:41, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- @MtBotany:
- Great page! There was really nothing missing. I just added the Lupinus category to it. I’m wondering how you found around 30 references for the page. I usually just copy the species name into google and find my references there, and the most I find is around 10.
- LycheeDragonLoverBACKUP (talk) 18:51, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- Mostly I just do websearches when I have something specific too look for that I know, but I need to prove. Like when I have heard people using a common name but none of my sources have said it so far. Or when I'm looking for cultivation information using a site search using name plus site:.edu to get me mostly university extension pages.
- I have most of my tricks listed on my user page. For example I go to archive.org and do a text search for the species or synonyms. First with quotes "Lupinus caudatus" and then without quotes to really dig deep and find mentions where it is "L. caudatus" in a longer article about Lupins. Or I'll start backtracking from Plants of the World Online. They list the original publication and date for species so with a bit of work I can find what the first botanist said about it. Speaking of that, I ought to see what Kellogg wrote about it, it could be interesting.
- Plus some of that long list of references is just different pages on POWO, one for each subspecies so that it would be easier on future people to find the same information like all the synonyms I put in for each subspecies. And the complicated disagreements that botanists have about Lupinus generally. So more stuff to explain. Aster (genus) ends up being like that as well.
- Edit to add: Here is an example of me working. Just started today on a new page in one of my sandboxes User:MtBotany/sandkasten. I started at POWO and then went to archive.org and the biodiversity heritage library to find the two places it was described. I got some useful color about when/how the plant was named and I'm already up to three references. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 21:04, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- @MtBotany:
- I’ll look to see if I can find any description info on that species, if you don’t mind other people editing your sandbox.
- LycheeDragonLoverBACKUP (talk) 22:14, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- @MtBotany:
- A source that is really useful is,https://www.fs.usda.gov/database/feis/plants/forb/wyeamp/all.html#:~:text=GENERAL%20BOTANICAL%20CHARACTERISTICS%20%3A%20Mule%2Dears,heads%20may%20occasionally%20be%20solitary. It has over 30 references, lots of description info, and even info on the effects of fire on the plant.
- LycheeDragonLoverBACKUP (talk) 22:20, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- Oh, yeah! I love FEIS. Both for it being a one place to get all sorts of great information, but also to find the sources so I can often cite those directly. I used it a buncha times for my Lupinus work because Flora of North America has not yet published their legume family stuff yet. I should add them to my tips. They don't have every wildflower, but they have a lot of the important ones.
- FNA actually has a good and complete description and a key on the page for the genus. http://floranorthamerica.org/Wyethia_amplexicaulis
- I would be happy to have you join in, I'll just move and rename the page to the mainspace when it is done so you get proper credit for your work. Afterwards I'll blank the redirect left behind for a new project. Also, be aware I'm only editing until about the 26th this month and then I'm back in October. Nothing bad happening, just going to be incredibly busy having fun for a month. There may even be botanical pictures...
- Edit to add: Also, if you ever ambitious enough to want to work on a table of all the plants for Washington State like my Draft:Flora of Colorado, let me know. I'd be happy to download the POWO data for you. It all has to be checked by hand and the common names added, you could decide if you wanted to put in NatureServe state status or not. I am because I think it makes it more useful even though it is a lot of work. 🌿MtBotany (talk) 01:32, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
