Popups memory usage—is there a leak?

I'm running IE 6.0.2900 on Windows XP. I notice after a while (a few hours) that memory usage of IE has climbed into the 100's of megabytes, even if I close all but a single window. I don't notice this behavior on other sites, so it led me to a suspicion that perhaps Popups has a memory leak. I'll admit that I haven't tried uninstalling Popups yet to see if this fixes the problem—I thought I'd ask first in case you already knew of an issue. I believe that IE6 has issues with ajax requests causing a memory leak, and the script uses these quite intensively. I don't know of a workaround in the script, since the leak is in the javascript engine itself. Lupin|talk|popups 21:19, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

OK, thanks for the reply. That's probably the problem, and certainly rewritting to not use Ajax would not be a worthwhile solution. Hi Lupin:

I was wondering, as I usually am when I wander this way, if you could lend your amazing scripting talents to a task for me. I'm looking for the ability to add a new sidebar box (like the navigation and toolbox) and put normal static links to frequently used pages in it (for me, things like the /Pending pages for RFCU & RFM, etc.) I'm sure this is a two-second task for someone like you, but you were the first person who popped to mind when I thought "I need a javascripter." UTC with popups

Hi, I'm using the normal version of popups (en:User:Lupin/popups.js) at the Korean Wikipedia (ko:User:Kjoonlee/monobook.js). It works very nicely at there, but I noticed it uses UTC instead of KST in the edit summaries when I revert. Links: edit summary, reverted to this version. Could you consider changing popups so that I can configure the timezone, please?

Redirection and popups

There are a number of articles where the first link of the page is to a disambiguation page. If I hover over a link to a page like that, could the popup please offer me the opportunity to disambiguate to one of the entries on the disambiguation page? Josh Parris#: 06:08, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

A great tool of yours, but...

I must confess, a few parts of your pop-ups need to be fixed ASAP.

1. Interiot's External Editcounter is no longer reliable, especially for the EN wiki. Please replace with the Wannabe Kate.
2. The Contribution Tree is not working at this time either. It reads "Software error: No data found in database", and has already been superseded by Wannabe Kate.
3. When trying to access the history of any page by editor using Tim's tool with IE and Opera, it now reads, "Error! A database error has occured: (1049, "Unknown database 'enwiki_p'") -- please try again later." The author, TDS (talk · contribs · count), has not edited actively since July, preferring to be contacted via email instead. In the meantime, nothing has been done to repair the tool. For a replacement (EN / DE only), see [1].

History popups need to handle markup

I wanted to point out that the popup history window does not process any wiki markup like the standard history page does. It ignores templates and <nowiki> tags, but most other mark is handled including links, bold, and italics. The links would be helpful. All would make the items that use markup easier to read. Conflict with IPA Quickhelp Templates

First, very sorry for the crosspost. I humbly suggest that you indicate which page, this one or Wikipedia talk:Tools/Navigation popups, is appropriate for such comments. If you want us wikignomes to do any clean-up, merge, or such tasks, just tell us exactly how and we'll take over the busywork.

I have an idea for making IPA symbols more comprehensible, using tooltips. I have made a template {{Ʒ}} that contains [[ʒ as in beige=beɪʒ|ʒ]], and then a redirect at [[ʒ as in beige=beɪʒ]] to the appropriate phonetic page. (Here it is without nowiki: ʒ, and here's a link to edit the template page: {{Ʒ}}. The discussion of this concept is here: template talk:Ʒ. Without popups, this works wonderfully: someone who doesn't know IPA sees blue text, moves their mouse over the link, then sees the quickie pronunciation help in the tooltip, and if they want to know more, they click and get the appropriate article. But popups makes it a major pain in the neck. Is there some easy way to tag the template so popups ignores these links? Or if not, could you please add a <span class="nopopups"> (or suchlike) feature to do this? Thanks, --Homunq 22:00, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Revert problem at Wikia.com

I noticed that when I attempt to revert pages at Wikia.com, it does not quite work. It seems the edit page ignores the AutoClick parameter. Any chance you could come up with a fix? If not, what should I tell their management? Will (Talk - contribs) 04:33, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Popup bugs report

On certain pages the following line: var plaintext = ""; var i=0; var c=c1=c2=0; results in the error "This property or method is not supported by this object."

This happens because the page contains an HTML element with id equal to c2 or c1. This behaviour is not unexpected. A fix would be: var plaintext = ""; var i=0; var c, c1, c2=c1=c=0; That would (hopefully) solve the problem.

Popups problem

You're loading two versions of the script: popups.js directly from your monobook.js and popupsdev.js from your admin_monobook.js file. Try commenting out one of these invocations and see if that helps. Lupin|talk|popups 18:38, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

bug with & char and disambiguation

Hello Lupin,
I'm using your Navigation popups to perform disambiguation on french wikipedia. Just a little bug to report :
When I want to fix a link with your popup (using autoedit, right ?), there's no match if the regexp contains a `&` character.

Problems

Hey Lupin. I'm currently experiencing the following problems:

• I'm getting this notice when no one has reverted a user:

Page rollback error: Last editor is <>, not <>. The user may have already been reverted. I waited about 5 minutes, thinking the server may need to catch up or something, but no one showed up in the history as reverting a user

• Your live lists of all recent changes, filter recent changes, and recent IP edits aren't working for me. It just keeps adding another yellow bar every 30 seconds saying it's updating, but no pages show

• And now when I go to the regular recent changes (the one in the navigation sidebar) to do patrolling, I don't even see any recent changes either. (I don't know if you can help with this)

Popup won't go away

You may have a conflict with George Money's AutoWelcome script. When I middle click a [welcome] link on my watchpage, Firefox opens a new tab in the background (where George's script runs). It also commonly opens one of your popups -- and it won't go away until I refresh the watchlist page. Will (Talk - contribs) 03:50, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Mckellen gandalf ttt poster.jpg)

I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Safari crashing with popups

Another Popups bug?

popupModifier='ctrl'

Hi Lupin, thanks for your popupModifier='ctrl' function. I have now been testing it for several weeks. It turnes out that it is essentially useless if the popup it not invoked when clicking Ctrl while already hovering over the link. It would be great if you could add that missing ctrl button handler. The popup is not triggered if you already hover over a link and then press Ctrl. I guess you have to add an event handler for Ctrl. Pressing Ctrl while already being over a link is what you automatically try and what feels normal. However, in the current implementation you have to press Ctrl and then move the cursor over the link, thereby often producing unwanted popups, especially on a link-crowded page like the watchlist. Good to see you back :-) Setting up addEventListener('keydown', Handler, true); and trapping event.ctrlKey == true works fine for me under Mozilla (SeaMonkey 1.1 and Firefox 2.0.0.1). Cacycle 15:48, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestion. I've done something of the sort to the latest dev version, and it does seem to work well in firefox. Popups - Disambiguation misbehaviour

Popups for Wikia.

Hi.

Some user of nonsensopedia (Polish uncyclopedia) reported that disamb an redir fixing doesn't work there. After some searching I found changeLinkTargetLink function. There you get the title for editing from the page title like this:

var title=document.title.split(' - ');
title[title.length-1]='';
title=title.join(' - ').replace(/ - $/, '');

But for Wikia the title is: Page name - Wiki name - A Wikia wiki

I've made a workaround by taking this into account. But that would be WikiaOnly-popups and maybe you could make this better by using the same link-getting procedure as in other places (I'm not sure where it is)?

Suggestion for Filter RC

Hey there! I've been using the RC filter tool for a short while now, and I have a small tweak that I and maybe others would find useful. The initial string of text and links e.g.

08:29:44 (last) (hist) Light-frame construction matched stud . . User (talk | warn | contribs | block) . . (Materials -added space) . . hide details . . [rollback]

Can be broken up onto two lines (at least on my resolution) by long 'matched' strings like 'poooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooop'. This makes the (talk | warn | contribs | block) and [rollback] button breakup onto different lines. I think that moving the 'matched' to a new line below or to the end of the string easier to follow when the edit clearly needs reverting. Having to double take to find the [Rollback] and (warn) buttons usually slows me down when there is a vandalism flood. Just a suggestion - but apart from that, it's a fantastic tool :-) . --Sagaciousuk ^(talk) 08:41, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Anti-Vandal Tool problems

Hi, Lupin. Positively great work on the RC filter scripts. I've been using them for less than five minutes and already reverted a few vandal edits. These tools are awesome! One little issue, though. I'm not an admin, so I checked the "Use non-admin rollback" box. I roll backed something, the previous (un-vandalized) version of which was contributed by Can't sleep, clown will eat me, but the username showed up as "Can't sleep%2C clown will eat me". It's not, for some reason, unescaping the comma. Is this intentional to protect the JS syntax or is it a bug? Just wondering, hoping I can help make your scripts better.

I'm back again, with another series of issues a little more serious than that above. I use the Anti-Vandal Tool on FF2.0 under WinXP Tablet SP2. If I click around too quickly, it's almost as if the script is getting confused or something and the browser crashes. I have had this problem on two of the four RC pages you created. I love your tool; it would be nice if I could leave it running while I'm online, but I can't if it keeps crashing the browser. Some more-specific information about the bug. Firefox seems to crash if I click "show changes" and then click "hide changes". That is, the sequence goes as follows:

• Load page
• Wait for first update (usually)
• Click "show changes" link
• Read changes and decide whether or not to do something
• Click "hide changes" link
• See changes hide
• Either watch browser crash or move on to another item, in which case its "hide changes" link crashes the browser

That's pretty odd. Browser crashes point to bugs in Firefox though, not my script, since javascript shouldn't be able to crash a browser. (Not that this helps you particularly!) Lupin|talk|popups 07:02, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Actually, I've had the same problems now with Gzkn's version of the script, so it's not immune. I would guess it is a Firefox problem, since I couldn't replicate the error in Internet Explorer (v.6). Should I submit a bug report to the Mozilla Foundation? Hi there Lupin! I've been translating Popups to be used on the hebrew Wikipedia. There is one thing that is bugging me - as the whole site is designed right-to-left (RTL) it is counter-intuitive there for the popups to be opened on the left. Too quick to joy, I'm afraid

By chance I have tested it only on latin character values. Now that I had more time with it, it seems there are fundamental problems with unicode characters. I am attaching an image of the result I get when I move the mouse over hebrew-named articles. For some reason, Popups fails to pick-up on the article's name. Funny that it does load DIFF information perfectly when I move the mouse over a DIFF link! Please, could you check it?

Also, the Revert option in the hebrew version does not want to automatically send the reversion. IE7 gives me a security notice that the website wants to open a scripted window to ask for information. If I enable this, it just doesn't do anything - then I have to write an edit summary myself and press send. This is very different from the english version I use, which does this all by one click of a mouse in the Popups. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I don't have Firefox installed, plus my system is pretty overloaded as it is (hoping to format the whole thing sometime soon). These results I got were using IE7. That "garbage" display would suggest to me that two-byte unicode characters are for some reason broken down to one byte. Yessss the dev version works better! It displays the hebrew correctly, but it still doesn't automatically press the Send button when I try to revert an article. Instead, IE is cautioning that This website is using a scripted window to ask you for information. If you trust this website..... It also doesn't write an edit summary so I have to fill that manually too.

Popups that won't go away

Could you add support for something like CTRL-ALT-F10 to cause all popups to go away immediately? User:GeorgeMoney's Auto-Welcome tool causes some popups to remain when you middle-click the [welcome] links in Firefox. As is, once such popups are visible, you can't get rid of them without refreshing the page. Will (Talk - contribs) 07:12, 16 January 2007 (UTC)

Pressing F10 makes the context menu appear for me. This uses control-alt-f9 instead.

AVT doesn't ignore sandbox

Changes to the revert function?

Hi Lupin! Thank you for Popups! It is helping a lot!

I have a question: Would you mind to change the revert message? On the German Wikipedia, our admins use a text like this:

(Änderungen von 217.13.165.68 (Beiträge) rückgängig gemacht und letzte Version von Enricopedia wiederhergestellt)

Translated it would be something like:

(Reverted edit from 217.13.165.68 (Contributions) and restored last version from Enricopedia.)

On that message, there are the IP(or username) and contributions linked to the appropriate page. I think it's more useful to have a link to the user page and especially to his contributions, than having just a revision number and timestamp of the old revision. What do you think?

On the German page there is also a user publishing scripts that might be interesting for you:

I would appreciate it if you would add one more reversion option, between "edit this revision" and "revert". I would like it to edit the revision and create the edit summary just as for reverting, but pause so the user can add additional information to the edit summary before clicking "save", so that the tool becomes useful for explaining reversion of good-faith edits as well as for reverting obvious vandalism.

By the way, for a while I was using a modified version of Popups before I realized I could just use some of the options you already provide. I apologize that at first I didn't think of changing the name of the program in the edit summary to reflect that it wasn't your version. As far as I know, no actual harm occurred. I edited it just the way I usually edit articles (on Mozilla); my edited version looks different (newlines were messed up by the editor or something?) but seemed to work. I'm not using it now.

Sorry, I hadn't seen this option: "popupRevertSummaryPrompt". so basically you do provide the functionality. Popup disambiguation outside main space

I am using User:Lupin/popupsdev.js for disambiguation. I believe it formerly worked correctly in Template and Category space, but I found it strips "Portal:" from the name, and when I tried "Template:" and "Category:", I found they are broken as well. — Randall Bart 01:54, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Of course, those may end up fixed and you'll need new ones. This isn't important enough that you need to test for it every day. These wg vars are new, and you grabbed the wrong one. wgTitle is the name within the namespace; wgPageName is the one for URLs. This bugs me, because I come from a tradition (Burroughs) where title is the fully specified name. I see you used title. Also I notice you translated "_" to " ". Why? Great, the latest version works with those test cases. I think wgPageName is not exactly the URL form; for example, on ? ? the value is '?_?' instead of '%3F_%3F'. I think it's actually the literal form but with spaces replaced by underscores; the Title object in my script, called with article: new Title(title), expects to be initialised with the literal form with spaces in it. Redirection and popups

There are a number of articles where the first link of the page is a hatnote pointing to a disambiguation page. If I hover over a link to a page like that, could the popup please offer me the opportunity to disambiguate to one of the entries on the disambiguation page? Scratch that, I read WP:HATNOTE or somesuch page. Examples for testing would still be nice, though. I see a way to do this efficiently: recognize the common hatnote templates and/or boilerplate text and add append links with special popups which point to the relevant dab page but edit the grandparent page/popup instead of the parent page/popup. Then you could use a popup to disambiguate in the normal way. Of course, I'd need a list of likely culprit templates to make this work... Lupin|talk|popups 09:11, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Subpages of subpages

Hi, Lupin! Thanks for the handy tool.

I was editing a list of links today when I noticed an odd malfunction of the "navpop" tool. Here's an example link where the tool malfunctioned for me.

Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approvals/Archive2#SmackBot task approval

Anyway, the link leads me to the right spot when I click on it, but "navpop" fails to find the internal anchor tag. In fact, I get a "redirect" out of navpop even when I point it at the same page without an internal title.

Oh – I'm using Firefox 1.06 running under SuSE Linux 9.3. I'll try it out with some other browsers when I've got one of them running. I suspect that the existence of a sub-sub-page is muddying the waters, or something like that. Thanks again! DavidCBryant 21:40, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Note that the page you link to is a redirect, from ...approvals... to ...approval..., so there's nothing wrong there. What has changed is that internal titles on redirects now seem to work within mediawiki. They don't work in popups. Thanks for pointing this out - I'll add it to my todo list. Disable popups for IE6

Could you specify a way for me to disable the popups in IE6 but keep them enabled in Firefox? I use IE as my default browser, but since it freezes a lot when I use popups, I have chosen to do my main wikipedia editing with your popups Firefox. I'm sure there is a way to make the script check which browser is being used, but my Javascript skills have failed me again. Re:Specification

Filter recent changes and Live spell check crash Mozzilia. Rollback links dont work in Mozzilla with popups. I love your antivandal tools. After a while of using the recent Ip and recent changes to revert vandalism things tend to slow down alot. I have DSL, and things really are never slow. No Joy

FF1.5.0.9 Win98 ... perhaps PopUp is class conscious?

I have been using popups in my project page since 2002 (MouseOver !Q!)... never any problem. I recently installed SNAP popup preview in my "MozDawg" blog ... it was, truly, a snap. No problem. Here, with this, I have CTRL-SHIFT-R a number of times, I have gone into T)ools, O)ptions and cleared Cache. I have restarted. I have rebooted. I have no joy. Perhaps Firefox is not supported? They use other popup code ... which work.I see the popups on other sites, but I do not see your popups here on WikiPedia. Autosubmitting requires popups?

I'm trying to use the Live Spellchecker (On Firefox 1.5), and when I click the word to correct it, it goes to the edit page, and I see auto-stuff in the URL, but nothing like edit summary is done. I believe there is a script somewhere called autoedit.js, upon which the auto-edit functionality of Popups is based. I think I've located this at User:Lupin/autoedit.js; try using importScript("User:Lupin/autoedit.js"); to add this to your monobook.js and try using Live Spellcheck again, after Shift-reloading your monobook.js. Unicode problem?

Hello. I seem to be having a problem with popups with IE7. When I hover over a link with a diacritic mark (such as Miss España) I get an odd link (Miss España) that won't work to go to the article. Interestingly, when I hover over the link in an editing box, it works properly (in this case giving me the redirect to (Miss Spain). --After Midnight ⁰⁰⁰¹ 05:30, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Personal messages

Hi. The other day I was monitoring the recent pages and came across a group of users who have not made any contributions and it seems they are just using wikipedia as a personal messaging place. I told them about it, and so far a couple of them have tried to blank their page, but so far one of them, User Evermaaz has kept using his talk page for personal messaging. I'm just wondering what I should do, if anything, or if you could do something. If I'm reading the rules correctly, using wikipedia like this is not allowed. I've installed IE6 and I don't see this problem. (Caveat: I am running IE6 and IE7 side by side with Multiple IEs and this may not be a reliable way to test). I still believe that this may be a caching issue. Please let me know if this issue persists in a week, as I hope it'll sort itself out as improperly cached things stop being cached. Alternatively, if you are really fed up with this then you can try importing the old version of the script by adding an oldid=... parameter in your monobook.js. Note that the caching may not be taking place on your computer - it could be the mediawiki servers. I don't pretend to fully understand this :-) (By the way, reinstalling Java will not make any difference here.) It is definitely true that running IE6 and IE7 side by side is not a reliable test. There are parts of IE installed deep in Windows, and installing IE7 changes some of those, changing Windows even if you never run IE at all. — Randall Bart 23:27, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Debugging

Looking at the code, revertSummaryQueried returns popupQueriedRevertSummary or popupQueriedRevertToPreviousSummary which are the only strings using the $ replacements instead of the printf % replacements. This is called in the first line of revertSummary where the string is returned without replacements performed. The rest of revertSummary deals with printf replacements and calls simplePrintf before returning the strings. (That first line is executed when the option 'popupUseQueryInterface' is true, which is the default.)

I have duplicated the popups script in my namespace and changed one minor thing (I don't know JavaScript well enough to know if it is a bug: removeTooltip had only one parameter, but was called with two See the second change here). I also added a string 'MEH ' in the front of the summaries so I knew for sure the code being used was mine, not a cache of yours. The problem seems to be that getValueOf('popupUseQueryInterface') is returning undefined when called by autoEdit to determine if it should download the json stuff. That is, I have put an alert just prior to that if statement and it returns 'undefined', where as the alert prior to the first line of revertSummary returns 'true'!

I tried commenting out the check of getValueOf('popupUseQueryInterface') to see if that's the only problem, but then pg.wiki.wikibase is undefined as well, so the json URL has no base.

So we need to get everything initialised before autoEdit is called. For testing I've called setupPopups at the start of each autoEdit(n), and it works: [7].

My guess is that the order of application of hooks defined by hookEvent('load', hookfunction) is either not defined or has been screwed up by Microsoft or someone else... - Mark Hurd 18:01, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Popups:Selective previews

Hey, great job on popups, but I have a problem with it. I noticed this morning (I assume there was an update) that when you select text while editing a page, it provides a preview for it (not a popup, rather it shows what the page will look like once saved above the editing box). However the "Show preview" button is disabled in that it doesn't show the preview and the edit box is all that is present it does show a preview of your edit summary though. I'd like to know if there's a way to disable this, I tried adding popupOnEditSelection=false to my monobook and it did work (selecting code no longer shows what it looks like when the page is saved) but when I click the "Show preview" button it still doesn't show me what the page will look like if I save it. I had a similar issue with this feature; it's particularly bad if you click either side of the edit box. Then when you reenter the edit box with the mouse, you're in highlight mode, and there's no obvious way out of the highlight mode, except by clicking on the edit area anywhere: which causes the preview feature to activate, which causes the whole screen to jump. I added the popupOnEditSelection=false to my monobook.js and reloaded, and the issue went away. In my opinion this feature should be off by default; it can make editing unbelievably painful and somewhat unpredictable. Unpredictable is usual bad.WolfKeeper 03:41, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

A Bug Specific to me I think

Hi. I'm having a problem with your popups. If you check my contributions you will see that the edit summaries say (Revert to revision $1 dated $2 by $3 using popups) rather than the correct variables being put in. I think I'm the only one having this problem, but I'm not sure. If you can fix this that would be great, but since everything else about it works fine it isn't imperative. Below, I believe, it was established that the problem lies in Internet Explorer. Being stuck with a "managed" computer myself, I developed a workaround that might work for you, if all you're stuck with is a "Limited" Windows XP user account. When Firefox's installer comes up, choose the custom install and change the directory to a subfolder of "C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\", where "C" is your user folder's drive. Partial popups

I installed your tool a month ago, with excellent results. Thank you for all your efforts.

Recently, however, the popups have stopped showing the first paragraph of linked articles when I hover over them. I still get the basic popup box—but no text from the article. It's as if I'd implemented simplePopups=true, which I haven't. Any suggestions?

Section links in popups preview

Hi! I find popups.js cool; it saves me a lot of time. There’s currently a couple of small problems with the rendering of links to sections in the history preview:

1. Spaces are encoded as ‘.20’ instead of ‘_’. I think this should be handled as a special case in Previewmaker.prototype.editSummaryPreview or Title.prototype.anchorFromUtf.
2. Too much wiki markup is interpreted, e. g. ‘* foo bar’ as ‘<li> foo bar’ (screenshot: [10]). This is not too annoying; other wikicode is worse, though. AFAIK only wikilinks should be interpreted (without the pipe trick). I’m not sure what the best way to fix that would be.

The pops work fine, execept for ocasionally when loading a page the pops log me out, but this is fixed by purging the pages.

Anti vandal tool

When people make reverts after having used this tool, their edit summary always looks like this (Revert edit(s) by 38.139.36.109 to last version by Qxz) . is there a way to generate this automatically and/or make the revert automatically? hope you understand me... Hi Lupin,

I have one more feature request related to "popupModifier='ctrl';". Since the Ctrl-hovering sometimes interferes with a Ctrl-click to open of a link in a new tab, I was wondering if you could implement the following scheme:

• Ctrl pressed, then hovering over a link (with the intention to click it): no popup, for opening a link in a new tab
• Hovering over a link, then pressing Ctrl: trigger popups

Automated message to bot owners

As a result of discussion on the village pump and mailing list, bots are now allowed to edit up to 15 times per minute. The following is the new text regarding bot edit rates from Wikipedia:Bot Policy:

Until new bots are accepted they should wait 30-60 seconds between edits, so as to not clog the recent changes list and user watchlists. After being accepted and a bureaucrat has marked them as a bot, they can edit at a much faster pace. Bots doing non-urgent tasks should edit approximately once every ten seconds, while bots who would benefit from faster editing may edit approximately once every every four seconds.

When specifying the revert summary, can we get $4 to return the name of the user whose edit I am reverting? If user X made the change I am reverting, it would be nice to say "Reverting edit by User X (talk)..." That puts a handy talk link into the summary. IE popups are NOT working!

I am now fed up that my popup tool is not working properly, on either IE6 or IE7. The page previews are not showing (save for images), the summaries look as though they were never filled out, and worse of all, the "Revert to $1 dated $2 by $3" bug is creeping in! (See these recent reverts of mine for an example.)

I may or may not know about the Firefox situation, except to infer that all should be fine with the tool on this browser. But on the other software, it's getting out of hand. Image popups

I started getting an error about 12-15 hours ago when I try to view Image previews on en.wikipedia through popups:
"imagepage preview failed :( is the query.php extension installed?"
It's not clear to me if this is a problem at my end or the server. It is happening in both IE7 and Firefox 2.0.0.2. ~ BigrTex 16:23, 27 February 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I know about this bug - it's not exactly my fault :-) As a workaround you can use popupUseQueryInterface=false, but you will then experience reduced functionality (eg no history/contribs previews). Lupin|talk|popups 04:29, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Popups overlap bug

Hi, Lupin. I feel like I'm spending a lot of time here, but I guess it's just me not liking to criticize people. Anyway, I've found a small bug with Popups. It involves Firefox 2.0.0.2 on WinXP and the "more..." link that appears when...what are the criteria for that link, anyway? And what's its purpose? Back to the point, when I hover over the link to Dr. Strangelove in the Trivia section of Back to the Future trilogy. If I do it while the next section, DVD release, is visible, and I click the "more" link, the popup expands in a queer fashion, with the text of the next paragraph overlapping the borders and padding of the bottom part of the popup. I will tell you now that I have a 1024x768 monitor. I have a screenshot, though I am not sure how to get it to you. Should I just upload it as a media file to Wikipedia? rv bug in nsummary

I've just reverted some vandalism to Emery Reves using popups, but it's marked the summary as (Revert to revision $1 dated $2 by $3 using popups) i.e. not substituting values for the $ variables. Red link popups feature request

Subspace redirect name bug

If I hover this link, I see that it redirects, but the redirect appears to be to the exact same name (User:Ccool2ax/Notability hurts), rather than the correct place (User:Chris is me/Notability hurts). Ah, I should read what you write more carefully. The two links do indeed look the same, because by default the path is stripped and those two pages have the same name modulo paths. There really is a bug, I am just having trouble describing it. Hover this link A popup (your popup) window says "Notability hurts", then "redirect to", then "Notability hurts" again. If I hover over the first "Notability hurts" in your popup, another popup (not yours) comes up saying "User:Ccool2ax/Notability hurts", which is correct. If I hover over the second "Notability hurts" in your popup, the second popup says "User:Ccool2ax/Notability hurts", rather than "User:Chris is me/Notability hurts". It's not a big deal; the links are correct, so I can see what I am looking for on the status line, and I don't need that little popup. problems when reverting

I use IE7. Whenever I try to revert vandalism, the edit summary comes up as Revert to revision $1 dated $2 by $3 using popups. I think others have been having the same problem. If you want to see an example, click here--Ed ^{¿Cómo estás?} 17:03, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

This is a known problem, see User talk:Lupin#Getting "revision $1 dated $2 by $3" above. Can you try reverting User:Lupin/sandbox and see if the problem persists? Can you try this on a computer with IE7 which you have never used to browse wikipedia before? I'd like to be able to reproduce this problem myself, but can't do so (I saw it once and then it started working correctly, so I put the problem down to caching issues). Safari User

Hi Lupins, I love your tool by the way. The mouse over preview does not work effectively when hovering over diff. It sometimes has an transparent background so both the background text behind the popups window and the popups window text blend together. I found that it sometimes does this in the recent changes lists, but not always. It has not crashed my browser yet though. I am using OSX 10.3.9 Mkdw^talk 09:02, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Rollback button - RC Filter

Hey there! I'm having a problem with the RC Filter. I have to use non-admin rollback, and that worked until a couple of weeks ago - where the link simply did nothing once clicked. Stoping pop-ups

Great tool Lupin, but I would like to turn it off now. I removed the script from my monobook.js, cleared the cache a few times, and closed all open browser windows, but it just doesn't stop. I am currently using Safari 2.0.4 Any ideas? Wolphii 06:37, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Bugreports

Hi Lupin, I don't know if you've noticed that several people have left bugreports at User talk:Lupin/popups.js instead of here? I'm only mentioning this because you don't appear to have replied to them, so I'm not sure you've noticed them.

I'd like to request a small change to your script. Currently it appears to try to place the popups near the mouse cursor. Do you think you could instead calculate the placement based on the position of the link I am pointing at that triggers the popup? The reason I want this is because the popup often covers the link and it becomes difficult or impossible to click it; if it was positioned so that its top edge is aligned with the bottom of the link, this problem would be solved perfectly. SVG Image

Regarding (and possibly other images also), since you say you made it in Inkscape, why don't you just upload the plain SVG file instead of converting back to a bitmap? That image is still tagged with

Popups and Template:Ref

Popups breaks Template:Ref, as noted here. It seems to have to do with the section naming "endnote_{{{1}}}" used by Template:Note and Template:Ref, which perhaps conflicts with the line "if ( ! /^(_note-|endnote)/.test(anch) ) { return false; }" in User:Lupin/popups.js? Including InstaView

Hi Lupin,

I have created a copy of InstaView for embedding this tool in other applications (like Popups and wikEd) under User:Pilaf/include/instaview.js. Feel free to use this instead of the popups-embedded code. This could save users from downloading the same code twice. I am not sure if the Popups-embedded or the "official" InstaView has more bugfixes. Suggestion for anti-vandal tool

On my system (IE7 WinXP SP2) after showing and then hiding a difference, a p tag 'stays behind' using up too much vertical space. (I don't believe it happened when I started using the tool, but I can't determine a recent enough change on my system or your script, so may be I just didn't notice before.)

Popups on my wiki?

Hi, Lupin! I like your Popups tool so much, I want to use it on my own wiki. I tried copying the JS and CSS codes to my wiki, linked them into the JS file with the importScript() function (which I "borrowed" from Wikipedia; I hope that's allowed), and got them to appear, but every page "appear[ed] to be empty." Popups redlink removal: suggested additional option

I first tried the redlink removal on a spam link, and was a bit taken aback when it simply removed the brackets. Sometimes I trace spam links that want removing altogether, e.g. an article is deleted but red links are left pointing to it from the "See Also" section of other articles. In these cases, the text needs removing as well as the brackets. - Fayenatic london (talk) 22:13, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

False negatives for "What links here" on deleted articles

Hi, I tried using Popups in the deleted article log to look for "what links here". If it worked, this would show links going red after the article deletion, as I'd like to inspect and remove or replace them. Popups Color Scheme?

Hi Lupin. I have been using your popups for a while, and I recently saw a picture of someone using them, but the popup in the picture is blue (line) and turquise (fill), and mine is light grey (line) and white (fill) because of another change I made to my monobook. [13] This is a common story; they can be very zealous at the Commons. You may want to track down this and any other deleted images that you've uploaded, then restore them if you still have the files. feature request

Hi, i'd like to suggest a feature for navigation popups. I think it would be nice to let the user decide separately on popup delay and data loading delay. For example user sets popupDelay to 3 and fetchDelay to 1 (or some other name, it would store the delay of downloading data after mouseover, it's value should be within <0, popupDelay>). In this case user gets the popup with all information instantly after 3 seconds because data would be downloaded before showing the popup. It could be done simply by first running the standard procedures after fetchDelay seconds, but with "display:none" applied to popup, and after popupDelay seconds since mouseover changing display to block or whatever it is now. You mention this was created in Inkscape. Do you have an SVG version available? There are other derivative works scattered all over Wikipedia, some of which have been listed at Category:Images which should be in SVG format, but they appear to be based on the raster version. Popups: un|watch - feature suggestion

At the moment, popups offer an un|watch option, where the user must select either to watch or unwatch the page. It works fine, however it doesn't offer the single option corresponding to the current watch status of the page; to check whether the page is already watched, the page has to be opened and the tab checked. Clearly this isn't a huge issue, but it could be changed to check the previewed page for existing watch status.

This is easily implemented (or at least I would assume it is - I don't know the ins and outs of the preview script); the element 'ca-watch' is present if the page is not watched and 'ca-unwatch' if it is currently watched. Presuming the preview script works on some kind of XHR implementation, then a couple of if clauses could decide whether or not the watch or unwatch option is shown in the popup menu.

Don't know whether or not it would be worth it.

Popups: bug when using default image wikitag name on local wikis

The problem is with articles when someone uses [[image:]] construct in local wiki article and someone else preview this article with popups (while hovering a link to it).

The problem occurs when a length of 'image' string and a length of local name for image wikitag is different. I've found a bug and fixed it in parse_image() in livepreview.js diff.

Script hogs CPU

Hi Lupin, thanks for a great script. I have concern about the CPU usage the recent changes script takes up though. Sometimes it will take up a full 50% (I'm running a dual core CPU) and cause Firefox to totally lag out, and become unresponsive. Is there a way to counteract this? Disabling the "edit on double click" feature.

When the navpops are enabled, it seems that double-clicks (or two rapid single clicks caught be a timer maybe? not quite sure) put you in "page edit" mode. Is there a way to disable this "feature"? If not, can one be added?

Disambiguation using popups: distinguish red links?

Today I used popups to disambiguate the link David Bates on the page Intellectual History to David Bates (intellectual historian). Within the disambiguation section of the popup, there was no way to tell that the latter was a red link to an article that does not yet exist. When disambiguating, Popups automatically shows Changes rather than Preview.

I think it would generally be desirable to exclude red links on the disam page from the options in the Popup window. However, my example does show a weakness in that suggestion: if David Bates (intellectual historian) had not been shown in the popup, I would have selected David Bates (historian) -- which would have been incorrect.

The most desirable position would be for Popups to show redlinks on the disam page coloured red within the popup. - Fayenatic london (talk) 20:22, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Redirects

Using popups when correcting redirects, it works fine with everything I have used it on apart from changing "Sky Digital (UK)" to "Sky Digital (UK & Ireland)", it just doesn't work clicking on fix this redirect goes to the submit page with only "Redirect bypass from Sky Digital (UK) to [[Sky Digital (UK " in the edit summery box, clicking on save the link still remains "Sky Digital (UK)". MD5 calc

I accidentally ran across this page while I was searching for something else and was wondering how to use it. I know how hashes work and stuff, but I know nothing about javascripts. Is there a way to encrypt messages just by using that script that you have? Do you use that js to actually do things, or is it just lieing around? Spurious "stylesheet" insertion by popups

I was saving an edit to Massacre of the Innocents and found that the following had been inserted: <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Lupin/navpop.css&action=raw&ctype=text/css&dontcountme=s">. Please investigate this. That article refers in the Notes section to cite.php, which I don't understand; is that a hidden function which has an undesirable interaction with popups? Suggestion for NAVPOP: Keep on screen?

I'm using your Navigation popups quite often and usually I just get carried away when reading the popup's contents, i.e. I'm looking at links inside the popup, then at links inside the new popup, ...

The problem with this is that the new popups always move downwards and to the right. Even if you start at the top of the screen, you'll end up at the bottom right, with the popup hidden. Interestingly, on my system (Window or Ubuntu and Firefox/2.0.0.3) the popup does not leave the screen to the right, only to the bottom.

• Is it possible to add an additional if-branch to the positioning code of the popup, testing if the popup in its final size (i.e. all content loaded) will be (partially) outside the window; moving it up/left if required?
• Or would it be possible to add code that allows for dragging the popup while pressing the mouse button in an empty area of it? This would allow moving it out of place, should it occlude something interesting as well (instead of letting it close and then re-walking the chain of 10 or so links...)

I've seen both with other popups, my main problem here is that I don't really know JavaScript (well, really, not at all...). Thus, I have not been able to check wether anything like this is already present in the script. I haven't had the time to check all your discussion pages as well, so I might have missed a similar discussion (in this case just ignore my post or add a one-line response if you've got too much time ;-) ). tebloraf 09:45, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Weird bits of text

Hi Lupin, I was using POPUPS for a while, but encountered a strange problem that seems to result from it. I reported it at the Village Pump here before I realized it had to do with POPUPS. I have a fairly slow Internet connection, and often overload my computer with too many tabs/programs open, so often it takes a while for pages to load. Anti-vandal tool

Hi Lupin, I was thinking about adding a non-word-bordered plain string search to recent.js. This could be indicated in the badwords list by enclosing in backslashes instead of the forward-slashes for word-matches. This would allow to detect the currently excluded repititions and could be useful for the detection of certain bad words or strings inserted into other words. What do you think. Browser slowdown experienced

Hi Lupin,

For a few days now (about 2) I have been experiencing a severe slowdown in page loading time on both my computers when logged in. When I disable JScript or am not logged in, this does not happen. There are no slowdown when using Internet Explorer (6 or 7). I am currently using Firefox 2.0.0.4 with a 4 mbps connection, and 375 ms ping to Wikipedia. I am currently using only Navigation popups. Any ideas?

It seems to be a bit better now, but Firefox is still considerably slower than IE. (Yesterday it took upwards of 2-3 minutes to revert a page! Even my userpage took minutes to open. Can slow international bandwidth make such a difference? Or if Wikipedia is very busy?) Popups' response themselves were as fast as always — i.e. to show history or diffs)

Problems with Live Spellcheck

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong...

When I use your spellcheck tool, I click on the link for the misspelled word, and then a new page (the article) loads. When I click the "Save Page" button, not only does it not add the edit into my contributions, but it also does not change the page in any way. Is there a mechanism to put [+] or [-] signs on TOC levels? Automatically collapse levels, if more than 50 show on a page? Use JS to shunt the TOC to float right by default (a la {{tocright}})? I suppose these would have to (dangerously?) override wiki.js from the Media Wiki software itself, but these don't seem too impossible, right?

From query.php to api.php ?

Hello Lupin,
I use your navpopups on another MediaWiki (1.10). There is an old matter with the preview of images that returns "imagepage preview failed :( is the query.php extension installed?" : would it be possible to use the Yurik's api.php instead ? Any way, I've tried to put put "api.php" instead of "query.php" in the popups.js I created on my site, for example, var url=pg.wiki.wikibase + '/api.php?format=json&what=revisions&revids='+rvid; instead of var url=pg.wiki.wikibase + '/query.php?format=json&what=revisions&revids='+rvid;, but it doesn't work. Is the only solution to install the old query.php, though the api.php is now on the official version of MediaWiki ?

Safari update

Just for your information. Those crashes happen a lot less in Safari 3.0.2 but sometimes i get a "this javascript seems to be in an endless loop, do you want to stop it?" dialog. (i have debug mode enabled for Safari, which might be the cause). However the menu's now seem to work, whereas these could be problematic before. The old crash happened like this:

Lupin, I've been thinking for a while. I have noticed several scripts on wikipedia were affected by a for( in ) problem. Twinkle had it, wikiminiatlas and several others. In investigating it, I found this link. I was rereading it just again, and noticed the following line: "Prototype also extends String with some methods for dealing with strings. If you try to use String as an associative array, your code will loop 20 times instead of three.". Single-click reverting

I've noticed that with my popups, sometimes the "Save changes" button is automatically pressed when I revert vandalism, but sometimes I have to click "Save changes" manually. It can be a real pain in the butt when you try to revert vandalism and someone beats you to the punch because you have to manually click the save changes button. Is there any way to make it so it always automatically presses "Save changes?" Savie Kumara 03:52, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

Quick Question

Hello Lupin, thank you very much for the anti-vandal tool. I've been using it, but I'm getting errors, and I would like to know if these are related to the tool, or some other issue.

When comparing edited versions of pages, I get errors with any of the following links: "Restore this version", "Rollback", or the "rollback(VANDAL)"
This is the error I get:

Grabbing edit form..................
Updating the textbox...
couldn't grab element "editform", aborting, this could indicate failed respons from the server

(response is spelled incorrectly in the error)

I've searched through the long /alltalk page you linked, but I really don't understand much of what's posted there. :(

I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.5 and the pop-up things work (i.e. hovering over a link shows the page), but without being able to revert to a good version, I'm having to wade through sometimes 10+ vandal edits and undo-ing each individually to get back to the original version.

Image loading failing

Hi,

Thanks for all the great scripts. Popups is slightly malfunctioning for me. Whenever I move over a thumbnail, popups comes up and instead of the image gives this message: "imagepage preview failed :( is the query.php extension installed". This happens on two different computers running different browsers. Any ideas?

This might be a tall order (time-consuming) if you haven't done it already, but: Have you considered listing explanations for your scripts (at least those under User:Lupin/index), i.e. what they do, where none are available? Annoying Image warnings from bots (BetaCommandBot)

I've noticed you seem to be getting a continuous stream of warning on uploaded images. I think this is a defect in the Bots, rather than your fault. Images that are quite easily and obviously covered by fair use, and could be quickly edited by a human user, are entirely missed by bots. Do you have any ideas about this? Do you disagree? Should image bots be changed to require notification to admins or others, and not just to original uploader? Just thought I'd mention it. Cuvtixo 19:37, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Disambiguation in Popups

I would like a few features in Popups to make it easier for me to disambiguate.

1) Disambiguation links above the preview. When I am on a dab run, I have the dab page open in another tab, and I really don't need to see a preview at all. Some of the previews are kind of big, and I have to scroll down looking for the dab links. I can temporarily turn off all previews with popupPreviews=false, but then I don't have previews for other things, and previews for nearby links are often the best source of disambiguation hints.

2) An option to put "remove this link" at the top.

3) Something like popupFixDabsSummary for "remove this link".

4) An option to put "Wiktionary" at the top.

5) An additional option to change to [[Foo (disambiguation)]], even though it doesn't appear on the Foo page.

6) An option to add {{tl:dn}} after the link.

Anti-vandal tool

Is there a way to modify the anti-vandal tool to change the "...except in the Template namespace" option to "...except in the User namespace"? This way I could see IP edits to userpages and more easily find that kind of vandalism. This change shouldn't be difficult, I think, and this way I could transfer the modified script to somewhere in my userspace and import it from there. Marking popup reverts as minor

Problem with anti-vandal

I installed the anti-vandal tool a while ago. It works fine on my Mac (Firefox for OS X) but when I run it on my laptop (Firefox for XP) it doesn't show any output. What causes this? Why wouldn't it work for XP?

Preview off mode

When preview is turned off, the popups should show "show preview" link, on clicking that, it should show preview of that popup. It is an enhancement im seeking in preview off and popups on mode. This "show preview" link should not turn on previews for all, but it should download(only that one desired page's preview) and show preview only on "clicking" this. minor bug in redirected pages

In popup of a redirect, the target article's history etc. popup does not pops up. Example if i point to WP:RS, it shows redirects to Wikipedia:Reliable Sources(Even in non-dev version). Help with disambig fixing via popups

Hi, was wondering how I would enable disambig linking via popups with the monobook script I have. I know you have to add popupFixDabs=true; but I don't understand where. i've been reading through you're help pages but they don't seem to mention where to add it. I would also like it, so I wouldn't have to preview the edit first, or am I being a bit thick, and this option (popupRedirAutoClick) is nothing to do with the disambig fixing :-/

An interesting revert

As about five of us were all trying to fix page move vandalism last night (and tripping over each other, and possibly causing one of the two db locks) I tried reverting to the last good version of one of the pages with your script. Admin rollback problem in Lupin tool

Hi. FYI, it appears some of the generated HTML has changed in the Last revision page so the admin rollback is broken. It looks like a <br /> was removed and replaced by spans with classes. I mostly fixed it by changing the regex as seen here but now, if someone else has already reverted, the Javascript message doesn't show their revert summary. Javascript/Template question

I thought you might have an answer to this. Is there a template that I can use that when placed on a page converts into the articles name? for instance if I put {{Page}}(an example) it would automatically convert into the name of the article which it's placed on? Someone Told Me You Could Help

Karmafist, when he was not banned, put something that he said came from you in my monobook entry. Well, er ok I blanked it, but it is still displaying a translation in spanish everytime I dwell over a word. Popup persistent toggle switch

For a long time I've been looking for a way to disable the popups beyond the current page. I've searched through the options but haven't found one that does this. So I've made a small script that use a cookie to store the current status of the popup script (on/off). A link with a form checkbox is added to one of the portlets.
I haven't found a way to re-enable popups after disablePopups() has been called, so instead I've chosen to modify a variable used by popupsReady().

So far the only minor disadvantage is that "natural" tooltips aren't restored on links where a popup was shown.

I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

Hi, Lupin. I am interested in using your popups on BhamWiki. What questions should I ask first in order to guess whether it will work? The wiki uses monobook. Someone pointed out User:Lupin/sig. Substituted signatures like this are frowned upon, since anyone can vandalize them at any time (see WP:SIG#Transclusion_of_templates). AVT problem?

Hi Lupin, I'm a huge fan of your anti vandal tool, but something appears amiss... it appears to be only picking up punctuation related edits. I tried control shift R to no avail. I looked through the badwords list and didn't see anything that might have caused the problem. I thought at first that someone had vandalized the list to make the tool less useful, but I didn't see any entries that would obviously cause this problem. The tool appears to be functioning as normal, except that now in the feed where it says Article name matched X, instead of X ever being offensive words, it's either a single character repeated, or -, >, |, etc. It does seem as if '>' might be substituting for an offensive word that then gets displayed when you open the diff, but I'm still a bit confused at this change. ~Eliz81^(C) 00:50, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

I'm having a popups problem

No content in Category:Jazz Bassists

article history popup

Whenever i visit some article in wikipedia, i wish to give a brief look at the article's history. I have to middle-click history tab for that now, which is cumbersome. I have nav-popups installed, can you change code so that a popup will come up to display history of the particular page im visiting? Like when i point the cursor on history tab button at top (of the article/talk-page im viewing), a popup showing history of that article should pop-up. Thanks in advance. I am working on forking the pop-ups for Citizendium, specifically because we use a different URL structure (wiki?... as opposed to index.php?...), but also to personalize it for the site. Hello there.

I'm currently using your "filter recent changes" tool, and I noticed that clicking one of the 'test' buttons doesn't do anything except lead you to the person's talk page. I was wondering if there's any way to implement a way of just having to click a test template, with the code filling in the vandalized article's name and all? Personalizing

is there any way to personalize lupin...such as i'd like it when i hit the vand. warning button for it to use {{subst:uw-vandalism2|Article}} instead of what it uses, and the edit summary for that to say, "vandalism warning!" so i can find them easier for myself, on my contributions page, and instead of the page summary saying "(Reverted edits by (name) to last version by (name)) can i make it say "rv vandalism" Ctjf83 03:52, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Popups appear transparent in Konqueror and sometimes also in Safari

When using Konqueror 3.5.5 on KDE 3.5.5 and sometimes when using Safari 3 for Windows, the popups appear transparent; they have no background and mix up with the article text, themselves and other popus in a very messy way. They also don't seem to react to mouse events, so you can't get rid of them when they appear. Shinobu (talk) 09:05, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

This is typically caused by the popups css file failing to load. I don't know why this might happen, though. I have changed the way this css file is called in the dev version, so you might like to see if using that fixes your problems. Lupin|talk|popups 19:30, 18 November 2007 (UTC)
