Fail nomination for UW-Madison

===University of Wisconsin-Madison===

This article is full of sources, well-written, and contains accurate history. UW-Madison is an academic powerhouse, being the one of the top four research universities in the country. It is the largest university in Wisconsin, and the tenth largest in the country. It also has a great sports program, with both the men's and women's hockey teams winning the National Championship in 2006. The Wisconsin Badgers football team and men's basketball team are among the best in the nation, and Wisconsin frequently dominates in lesser-known sports, such as rowing, track, and cross-country. The University of Wisconsin-Madison brings together all aspects of college, being one of the finest universities in the country. Lordmontu 04:26, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Asperger syndrome

Yes, remember, you and Emily and I were talking about this certain someone and I brought up that exact form of autism?

Oh, yeah...I completely forgot about that. Lordmontu 23:02, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Fighting Vandalism

I noticed that you were reporting vandals to WP:AIV, and the community thanks you for that, but it seems that you are a bit unaware of our procedures on fighting vandalism (that's ok, everybody is new at some point :p). I thought these pages would be very useful to you:

If you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message, or leave {{helpme}} on this page, and an expierenced Wikipedian will be around to help you. Have a nice day. Iced Kola 18:07, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

My User Watchlist

Special:ipblocklist

I want this article to be featured, and it need clean-up work. Lead may need to be longer, maybe more cites, external links definitely needs to be cleaned up and shortened. Any other comments or ideas will be appreciated! Lordmontu 04:46, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Just a few suggestions:

  • The intro needs to be expanded a bit. See WP:LEAD.
  • A lot of claims in the article are not cited. Also, many of the things that are sourced are done in different styles. One uniform style should be used throughout the article. See WP:CITE.
  • The external links section needs to be tidied, as it is too large.
  • Some sections, such as the one on the Music Hall, need to be expanded.

WP:BIGTEN

Alright, thanks for joining. Yeah, I don't think fair use images can be used in userboxes. If I can't think of an alternate I'll just use the same building I use in the talkpage template. First thing you can go is start tagging some articles. I did some aready, the ooes that need tagging are probably quite obvious (history of..., athletics teams, etc.) Or you could fix up what you know with UWisconsin-Madison and help make that an FA.--Wizardman 02:05, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Stadiums, buildings, all that stuff I would tag, players for now I'll say stay away from. If we start expanding then maybe in the future, but not now. If you really want to tag college athletes, limit it to those that get their fame mostly from college athletics (Archie Griffin works since he won the Heisman twice). --Wizardman 05:18, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Talk about timing

We both put the same guy up for block at the exact same time. Do I delete mine or leave it or what? :-) wish wiki time coded it to the second curious how close it was. --Xiahou 01:23, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

just happend to me again, but I took it off since the time code was in his favor. From now on though I will just leave it. Thanks for replying.--Xiahou 01:30, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Re:

You've put a lot of time and effort and that's commendable! In my opinion, the article still leaves a lot to be desired: (1) Structure and Flow. It is not clear to me even in the very first section what the logical flow is: some subsections deal with history, several others with specific Halls, and another one with student activism. (2) Prose. Some sections are still not prose-like. (3) Referencing. That's a huge one. Many statements are not referenced. (4) Copyediting. That seems to be a very common issue. Don't get discouraged, you are doing good work and it shows. One venue where I have been able to get very helpful comments is the Peer Review process. I noticed you got only one person to comment the last time but with a bit more effort and reminding people do leave helpful comments. LaSaltarella 22:12, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Suggestions

Hey, glad to see you putting in work to improve the University of Wisconsin-Madison article. You have helped it tremendously already. However, there are still many issues to be resolved before this could pass as an FA. Here is a non-exhaustive list of issues:

  • 1.) Beginning an article with a "see also" is bad practice as I understand it. Using the "other use" template might be appropriate. For example, see Pennsylvania State University.
  • 2.) Undoubtedly, people will object to this article based on using weasel words, and you need to avoid academic boosterism. Here are a few examples of uncited phrases that need to be deleted or modified (just looking at the lead!):
  • "In achievement and prestige, the University of Wisconsin–Madison has long been recognized as one of America’s great universities." Delete. You could say, however, "U.S. News ranked UW as the __th most prestigious school in the United States in 2006" and then cite a source. That would be appropriate.
  • "Many of its programs are hailed as world leaders in instruction, research and public service"
  • "Frequently hailed as a "public Ivy," " - by whom? What is frequent? Public Ivy on its own is very POV, and thus should probably be deleted.
  • 3.) History section is a bit choppy. Sections are a bit too short and specific, namely "Bascom Hall," "Music Hall," and "The Wisconsin Idea." Bulleted list of notable events should be converted to prose. Lists are bad!
  • 4.) Don't start sections names with "The." Run the semi-automatic javascript program at User:AndyZ/peerreviewer.js for more advice. which will have some suggestions. In particular, it probably will suggest avoid using words/phrases that indicate time periods relative to the current day, there should be a non-breaking space -   between a number and the unit of measurement, weasel words, additive term issues, temporal terms, etc.
  • 5.) Still a lot of uncited information. Also, include original publication dates of sources if available.
  • 6.) Image:Numen-lumen.jpg, Image:Uw madison logo.gif, Image:BuckyBadgerGraphic.gif need fair use rationales. Are photos by Daniel P. B. Smith copyrighted? Image:1554 sterlingmarker.jpg and Image:Bascom1.jpg I don't get how you used them. Also, image placement is sloppy and the photos themselves aren't that special. I'd rotate them in the left and right positions. See Michigan State University for a good example of image placement (and nice photos too!). Although on a large monitor, the MSU images do get squished.
  • 7.) "Notable people" needs some content.
  • 8.) Prose definitely is not a professional standard as required for a FA. See 1a.
  • 9.) Don't link stand-alone years. You can link specific dates, however. For example, don't link 2001, but link June 7, 2001. See also Wikipedia:Only make links that are relevant to the context.
  • 10.) Avoid short, stubby sections such as in athletics. 5 sections? Too many. "Media" split up too much as well.
  • 11.) Focus on important issues and make subarticles for unimportant ones. For example, is it really necessary to have 4 paragraphs about "State Street Halloween Party"? The controversies may have been a big deal in recent history, but are they really that significant in the long history of UW? No. It may deserve a sentence at most, and you could always create a subarticle.

That's all I have for now, but there are definitely other issues that I didn't mention. I'll try to give some more advice when I get a chance. Good luck! -Bluedog423Talk 01:13, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

UW-Madison Ranking

Hi there, I think you need to provide source for "US News and World Report ranked UW the nation's seventh best public university in 2007." The current source used in UW-Madison is the 34th national Univeristy, not the one you are claiming. Miaers 19:36, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

I had another very quick look - I'm just returning from traveling, and quite behind. The lead looks better, why is TOC so small? The article is still seriously undercited. On principle, I suggest placing it at peer review and waiting several weeks to see if someone weighs in. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 21:37, 23 January 2007 (UTC)

Hey...kind of busy with my own FAC, so I'm afraid I won't be much help, but I would probably agree with all of the comments above from the other reviewers...perhaps a second round at peer review would be helpful? Gzkn 00:55, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

UW-Madison Template

The On Wisconsin article is mainly about Wisconsin's state song. UW-Madison's fight only happens to have the same name and is different from the state song. Anyway, you should place the template to article that are exclusively about UW-Madison. You can't claim Wisconsin's state song as part of UW-Madison. The same thing is true for other cases you mentioned. They are not not part of UW-Madison. It is inappropriate for you to put UW-Madison template to these articles. Maybe you should create a seperate article for UW-Madison's fight song and place the template there. In that case, nobody will argue with you. Miaers 01:09, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

To be honest, I've never heard either of these two songs. But you can see from the article the lyrics are different. So they are not the same song. The source you provided is from UW-Madison. So the wording may be in favor of UW-Madison. There is also "On, Wisconsin! was the cry that Arthur MacArthur, Jr. used in the Battle of Chattanooga at Missionary Ridge...." in the article. As for the trophy, putting all competing team's template is better than just putting one. But I still oppose doing so, because the sport event should be independent of the competing teams, at least the competing teams don't own the event/trophy. Miaers 01:54, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Well, it seems as though the template is appropriately placed. As long as you have both the UW and the opposing college's templates on the specific trophies, I don't see the problem.
As far as the On, Wisconsin! article goes, I don't see at all how Miaers is getting his information. The song is clearly about both the state and the UW and to not have the template there seems a mistake. I'll reply and say as much on his talk page also. It seems you've (unfortunately) made a friend who is probably going to stalk your edits for quite some time. Cheers, PaddyM 16:20, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

The UW

Hey - Since you've been spearheading the effort to 'featurize' the Madison article, I wondered if I could enlist your help to enact the proposal I made. I will list the dismabig page for deletion, but I am woefully incapable of creating redirects and the like. Do you mind attacking that portion of the solution? Thanks much, PaddyM 19:42, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

Good call. I guess I'm just not sure what else needs to be done. If the AfD passes, I guess it won't matter at all, will it? Nevermind then. Cheers, PaddyM 22:12, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
Actually, I was under the impression that it was supposed to be an ndash. If you check in the article on the UW, you'll notice that it uses the ndash . . . so, where do we go from here? Cheers, PaddyM 23:33, 30 January 2007 (UTC)

Your VandalProof Application

Dear Lordmontu,

Thank you for applying for VandalProof! (VP). As you may know, VP is a very powerful program, and in fact the just released 1.3 version has even more power. Because of this we must uphold strict protocols before approving a new applicant. Regretfully, I have chosen to decline your application at this time. The reason for this is that your account is very new. Please note it is nothing personal by any means, and we certainly welcome you to apply again soon. Thank you for your interest in VandalProof. Formatting problems on your user page

Part of your user page doesn't fit onto my 1024x768 screen. (That is the only resolution I can run at this time.) I figure you are missing a call to {{clear}}. Most user boxes behave strangely outside a container like {{babel}}, the {{userboxtop}}/{{userboxbottom}} combo, or a table with one cell per box. Before my own user page grew, I ended up using a table to contain the boxes. That let me tile them nicely. Will (Talk - contribs) 07:04, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

I'd say the problem is solved. Did you see my page? It has been going through a lot of changes. Check out my templates page and see if there is anything there you would have a use for. Will (Talk - contribs) 23:32, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Please subst warning templates

When using certain template tags on talk pages, don't forget to substitute with text by adding subst: to the template tag. For example, use {{subst:test}} instead of {{test}}. This reduces server load and prevents accidental blanking of the template. Will (Talk - contribs) 00:03, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

WikiProject Big Ten Newsletter, February 2007

Hello all Big Ten Wikipedians, here's the manual newsletter (becuase I suck with templates :P) on February. As it says on the Wikiproject, this month's main article is the Big Ten Conference, primarily because that article needs so much help right now. Everything seems to be going well so far. I'd be helping more but I had other things I was doing. Glad to see a lot of members joining though. I'm thinking of starting an assessment division of our own, but I'm not sure yet. Give me your opinions on if we should start tagging people as well btw. If you guys wish to start tagging college presidents of them, that would be a good start. The project is still partially in development, so any advice helps. Go Bucks! (and spartans, badgers, wolverines, illini, etc.)--Wizardman 01:26, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

University of Wisconsin

There is no census on directing University of Wisconsin to UW-Madision. On the contrary, there was a concensus on creating an disambiguation page in the old discussion. Miaers 18:06, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Lordmontu, I find your message on my talk page very weird. If you think my addition to the UW system is inaccurate in any way, you can point them out. As for my opinion about PaddyM is not your business and I can make discussions whenever I think necessary. Anyway, I feel offended by your message on my talk page and I'll have it erased. Please don't leave such message on my talk page any more. Miaers 01:02, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
