[edit]Thanks for the kind thoughts - and no, you weren't really part of the 1% (there are far, far worse out there :). Edit conflict
[edit]I see from the edit conflict i just got that you've spotted the three new museum-stub templates :) Grutness...wha? 04:50, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah.... some day I'll wise up and get off the computer.... You might want to make {{Denmark-museum-stub}} and {{Poland-museum-stub}} too... Lithoderm 04:51, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
- Good idea. As to taiwanese museums, no - there's enough possibility of edit warring if you add it to articles about Hong Kong - Taiwan would be going much too far! I'll make the two you mention and {{Taiwan-museum-stub}} as well. The debate at WP:WSS/P suggests that country-specific museum stubs for just about any country are a sensible idea. Grutness...wha? 05:02, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
- {{Vietnam-museum-stub}}, {{Sweden-museum-stub}}, {{New-Zealand-museum-stub}}, {{Switzerland-museum-stub}}, and {{Austria-museum-stub}} would also be useful. Lithoderm 05:22, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
- Greedy :) - all done, though the NZ one is at the usual stub naming ({{NewZealand-museum-stub}} - it's not a subtype of some nonexistent Zealand-museum-stub). I've also added {{Turkey-museum-stub}}. Grutness...wha? 22:39, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
- I'm adding a final batch for the time being, for Indonesia, Burma, Malaysia and Mexico, all of which seem to have a fair few museum stubs. That should at least get the main Museum stub category down to under a page. Grutness...wha? 00:36, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit]I just wanted to thank you for your work on the template and the articles. I'm doing a research paper on Urizen and the related mythology, and wikipedia has been wonderful as a tertiary source, largely because of your efforts. I have all the scholarly and critical essays I need for hard citations, thanks to the uni library, but using this work as an overview and a guide to related topics has been invaluable. Thanks :) Deltopia (talk) 20:19, 30 January 2009 (UTC)
- Well, it's rare that one's thanked for this. Flattering, I must admit. You may also wish to thank User:Charles Matthews, who actually started most of those articles, and User:Ceoil. But I do appreciate it. Lithoderm 21:27, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

Referencing
[edit]This is a good template to put on user (or article) talk pages to clue them in: {{refstart}}. Or give them a link to WP:REFB. Ty 02:58, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'll try using it. Speaking of templates, I think that this one is finally good to go! I come across many new articles that look like they're direct MSWord imports... Lithoderm 03:05, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

- Thanks. I tweaked it a little more too, but the changes haven't shown up in the template yet. Perhaps double-transclusion is a bad idea..? Lithoderm 22:35, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

This is a synopsis of how to write a short article, or stub, using the example of Gord Smith. It is also intended to give a brief introduction to wiki-markup. Occasional footnotes and help boxes are included to aid your understanding. You need not memorize the symbols that are used to format the text, but can copy and paste the text from this message and replace the information with info relevant to your subject (or try the buttons above the editing box). Note that this does not ensure that your page will not be deleted, as your subject must still follow the notability criteria. Should you wish to work on an article without fear of argument or deletion, you may work on it in your user space; a how-to can be found here. For further guidance see the essay "Your first article".

More help on citing books and references:
|
{{cite book |last= |first= |authorlink= |coauthors= |editor= |others= |title= |origdate= |origyear= |origmonth= |url= |format= |accessdate= |accessyear= |accessmonth= |edition= |series= |volume= |date= |year= |month= |publisher= |location= |language= |isbn= |oclc= |doi= |id= |pages= |chapter= |chapterurl= |quote= |ref= }}
|
Note that not all of these spots have to be filled in; only the title, date, publisher, and author are required. Often reference templates look something more like this, when filled out:
Editing | Saved |
---|---|
*{{Cite book | author=Behrendt, Stephen C. | title=The Moment of Explosion: Blake and the illustration of Milton | date=1983 | publisher=University of Nebraska Press | location=Lincoln | isbn=0-8032-1169-4 | pages=}} |
|
To add inline citations, put this template in the body of the text where the footnote should go: |
<ref> (citation here, either in the form of a url, or if a book, use the same template as above with the page specified. You can really use the citebook template for webpages too)</ref>
If you link to a url, you will need to format it by placing a single bracket on either side, making sure that the http:// prefix is included in the address. The easiest way to do this is to cut and paste the address from the browser bar. If you link a url, the address goes first, then after a space, the text to be displayed goes inside the bracket also.
[URL(space)Text displayed]
Then add {{reflist}} under the references heading.
The page now looks like this: |

Your edits are either of questionable value (like linking common words that probably shouldn't be linked -"Paris", "imagination", etc.) or outright vandalism: [3]. Thank you for the barnstar, but you could do me a much greater favor by leaving William Blake alone. I suppose I can see where you were coming from, with "if this Blake could do when he stood up from shite, what could he do when he sat down to write?" Blue Nude
[edit]Some of us are thinking about working on Les Demoiselles d'Avignon next; and it would be great to have this image (in its own article) - Blue Nude (Souvenir de Biskra) to use, apparently it drove Picasso so crazy that his competitive nature motivated him to paint Les Demoiselles. Because it is in the public domain in the US (hypothetically, at least), you should be able to put it into the article on Les Demoiselles without having to supply an additional rationale. Unrelated question - I recently added Boy Leading a Horse 1906, to Les Demoiselles d'Avignon and its still a FU image..any chance it's really PD? Modernist (talk) 02:57, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks. In practice, PDUS tends to mean "painted in this date before 1923"-- that's what I've been following for Matisse, anyway. The law actually reads "published", so it has to be reproduced before 1923 in the US... this is difficult to prove or disprove, so the creation date... what I said above... but Picasso seems to be a special case, because his estate is so litigious. I'd ask Ty to look at this- I'm not even sure where to start looking on the net, and he did so well at Les Demoiselles, too. Lithoderm 03:12, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- All I can find so far pre 1923 on Google books are old fogeys complaining about "the new trends in art". Sorry about that... My favorite so far is "After Bouguereau the deluge! The technical excellence of Meissonier could not be surpassed!"
- According to the MoMA[6] it was in the collection of a French gallery until 1934, so it's unlikely to have been published in France, much less published in the US. Lithoderm 03:29, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Native American art
[edit]Hi Lithoderm! Wow, wonderful - I can't believe how much work you've already accomplished! I was also hoping to take a hemispheric approach. The challenge is how to best divide time periods and geographical regions. It seems that you have found the solution to place the ancient and historical (up to 20th century) art under their geographical regions and then pool contemporary Native artists together. One way to get a handle on contemporary native arts would be to divide it by media. And legislation such as NAGPRA and the Indian Arts and Crafts law should be included in the US contemporary section, since they have had such widespread ramifications. Anyway, I'll try to gather notes and put them in some wikipedia form! I look forward to collaborating on this project. Cheers, Uyvsdi (talk) 02:00, 27 February 2009 (UTC)Uyvsdi
- Hi, I created a copy of your page on to my page, so I can tinker with the text. I made some (hopefully non-controversial) edits to the your main version. I thought it would be polite put South America first, since the oldest art we known about is found there and English-language articles tend to be North-centric, but then it doesn't flow because the Caribbean section should be adjacent to the South American section. I don't know a term for the northeastern area of South America. Is Panama what you mean by "Intermediate area"? I hope you don't mind, but I changed dates to the BCE/CE format, since it's more cultural neutral than CE/AD. I also removed the mention of 8000 BCE in the introductory sentence, since art went back further in time (the paintings at Caverna Pedra Pintada), but if you like, of course, restore it. I did include the mention that False Face Society masks are not art and are forbidden by the tribe to be shown in public. You'll notice most recent, culturally aware Native American art books (such as Berlo and Phillips) don't even mention them. This is so much to write about, no need to include items not considered art (i.e. for public display) by tribes, e.g. medicine bundles, funerary urns, etc. I'm going to be swamped for the next week and a half, but will try to write text for this project afterward. What is your main sphere of interest? I have a feeling I'm probably the most interested in contemporary art. Cheers, Uyvsdi (talk) 18:44, 28 February 2009 (UTC)Uyvsdi
- Oh, yeah, I'm surprised you published it directly to the Wikipedia. Do you think it's ready for the public? Cheers, U
