Ref: Alison Appleton draft declined

[edit]

Hello Anastasia

I am new here, so I hope you can help me. It's my second attempt at writing this article. I do know that it's subject is notable and has been the subject of inclusions in national media here in the UK and Ireland, but I am clearly getting something wrong.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Alison_Appleton

If I delete the citations which refer to Whittards, Twinings and La Cafetiere in the reference section, while leaving the body copy that refers to them, would that sort things out?

I thought these associations with fairly major corporations (in their fields) added to her notability.

I really want to get this right and would welcome your advice.

Thank you for your time

Thank you for contacting me, Linspark! I'm happy to be of assistance :) Perhaps I didn't explain the problem properly. Sorry for any confusion I might have caused you. Your submission is about a notable person who is definitely worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, and your sources are acceptable. This is the problem: Although the text says many things which would make her notable, some of these things do not have sources to back them up.
For example, the fact that Alison Appleton's works have "been featured in British newspapers such as the Daily Mail, Sunday Express, Sunday Times and Yorkshire Post, and in magazines including Ideal Home, Good Homes, House Beautiful, Shortlist, The English Home and Period Ideas" makes her notable, but, since there are no sources backing it up, the reader has know way of knowing whether this statement is true or not. A source is needed for this and all statements which do something to establish Appleton's notability. See Wikipedia:The answer to life, the universe, and everything
However, for the statement that "[Appleton's] designs are influenced by a wide range of sources, from eighteenth century chinoiserie to fairy tales", a cited source (although encouraged) is not required, because this statement is not a quote and does not establish her notability. For nonessential facts like these, primary sources can also be cited.
So, to get your submission accepted, you should make sure all of the important facts which make Appleton notable are backed up with reliable sources. Don't be afraid to cite some primary sources, such as the Whittard one, for the nonessential details. Another thing I might suggest to improve the submission would be to remove all in-text external links, or move them to the bottom of the page to the "External links" section, per Wikipedia:External links (although this will not affect the article submission process, it will improve the layout of the article)
I know all of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines can be confusing (and frustrating) to navigate, so I want to thank you for persevering and contributing despite setbacks :) Did I answer your question correctly? Is there anything else you would like to know? ~ Anastasia (talk) 19:42, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Anastasia

You are BEYOND helpful! I am so appreciate of your detailed email - I don't think I'd have got there on my own and the first reviewer didn't reply to my query.

I think I have revised the piece in line with all your recommendations. I didn't cite the list of publications because her presence in some of them consists of just product listings and pictures. That said, I now understand and appreciate your point about establishing notability.

This is my first time on Wikipedia and I do hope I have it right now. It's actually hugely encouraging that the approval process is this rigorous and has this much integrity.

Fingers very crossed - and have a nice evening

Best wishes

Linsey

My pleasure! By the way, to correctly leave talkback on someone's talk page, type in {{talkback|Linspark}}. That should fix any formatting problems. I was happy to be of service, and if you have any more problems, don't hesitate to ask :) Ciao! ~ Anastasia (talk) 16:53, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
