Thanks for pointing out the overlap with Autonomic computing. The vision of autonomic computing from 2003 can be seen as a predecessor for self-aware computing systems that have been defined over a decade later and has significantly evolved. The core differences are: Autonomic computing does not strictly integrate ongoing learning - in other words continuous self-improvement. In contrast to Autonomic computing, Self-aware computing systems are not strictly required to act - they can also suggest and explain to human users, as a form of a artificial intelligence engine. If self-aware computing would be merged with autonomic computing, this would make this evolution and core differences hard to communicate to the reader in a compact way.
