Hi Viriditas, it was tagged for G6 with the rationale This project page may meet Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion because The bot that generated and updated this page has been blocked along with its operator. No need to keep. The page hadn't been edited in over a year. The bot in question was Femto Bot, which is blocked, the user however is no longer blocked. Gillian Bird

Hi Legoktm. I'm generally a bit ambivalent in regard to choosing to restore edits by banned editors, and I'm not inherently opposed to doing so, but in this case do you feel it is the best move? It looks like this is an attempt to game the system, by adding "good" material to prove that the ban was unjustified. If it was a short comment or removing a bit of vandalism I'd be happy, but a full page written by a banned editor is a lot to let through. - Bilby (talk) 09:22, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

I do. We now have a well written article about an Australian diplomat who is soon going to represent her country in the UN. On top of that, Wikidata has a decent item about her now. We're now one step closer to our purpose, so I think it's a good thing. Legoktm (talk) 11:31, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
On the other hand, we've made a statement that if Russavia flaunts his community ban, we may just let him get away with it, and let him ignore the community's decision. The article could have been created another way. Well, this is going to keep going, so I guess we just have to continue to play whack-a-mole for the foreseeable future. - Bilby (talk) 12:04, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
If you're up for re-writing all of the articles Russavia plans on writing before he does, that would be amazing. But if not, it just harms the project as a whole. 5 or 10 years from now, no one will care whether he was banned or blocked or whatever. But his contributions to that article will have spread knowledge to someone (I already learned something new), and therefore will be a net benefit. Legoktm (talk) 01:41, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
Calculating net benefits is tricky - having more articles is good, having the inability to effectively ban or enforce bans on editors who go against policies and disrupt the project is bad. Clearly we differ on this, but my view is, and will continue to be, than bans need to be actively enforced to be meaningful, and loosing the ability to meaningfully ban editors (as imperfect as the system is) would be a major negative for the project. - Bilby (talk) 01:57, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

Recent software changes

  • The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf12) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on July 3. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on July 8, and to all Wikipedias on July 10 (calendar).
  • CirrusSearch was enabled on July 1 as the primary search method on 36 new wikis, including the Norwegian (no), Portuguese (pt) and Ukrainian (uk) Wikipedias. [1]
  • It is now possible to create Atom or RSS feeds for Word of the Day, Word of the Week and similar entries on Wiktionary wikis. [2] [3]
  • You can now use a graphical interface to edit TemplateData information on the English (en), French (fr) and Italian (it) Wikipedias. [4] [5]

VisualEditor news

  • Saving an edit with VisualEditor will now be much faster. [6] [7]
  • You can now add a caption when you add a file to a page with VisualEditor. You can also change the file to a different one and keep the existing caption. [8] [9] [10]
  • When you switch to the Edit source tab, you are now asked to keep your changes. You no longer need to find the option in the menus. [11] [12] [13]
  • The reference tool that adds empty <ref></ref> tags is now at the bottom of the Cite menu, below references that use templates like {{Cite web}}. [14]
  • Context menus will no longer be shown over items that you can edit directly, for example formulæ. [15] [16] [17]

Future software changes

  • Starting on July 9, it will be possible to globally rename global (SUL) users. The feature was first scheduled for July 1, but was delayed due to bugs.
  • A plan to enable CirrusSearch as the primary search method on the 11 largest Wikimedia wikis has now been prepared. [18]
  • If you use references on a page, you will soon always see them at the bottom of the page, even if you forget to add the <references /> tag (or a template). [19] [20]
  • Black-and-white XCF images will soon display correctly. [21] [22]
  • Description pages of SVG files will soon always show download links for multiple resolutions (example). The links were previously shown only for SVG files in large original resolutions. [23] [24]

Problems

  • Between July 2-3, there were problems with loading pages on multiple wikis due to a configuration issue. [25] [26]
  • For a few hours on July 1, there were problems with uploading new files on Wikimedia Commons due to a configuration error. [27] [28]

Recent software changes

  • The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf13) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on July 10. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on July 15, and to all Wikipedias on July 17 (calendar).

  • You can now read a summary of the Wikimedia technical report for June 2014.
  • You can now read the latest issue of the Wikidata newsletter and translate it into your language.

VisualEditor news

  • The tool to add templates and citations will now work for templates that include HTML comments or templates in their titles. [31] [32]

  • References will now be shown in the default font size again. [36]

Future software changes

  • CirrusSearch will be enabled as the primary search method on the Dutch (nl) and Japanese (ja) Wikipedias on July 14, and on the Polish (pl) and Russian (ru) Wikipedias on July 16. [37]
  • The Special:Version page will soon show the exact version of MediaWiki and all extensions installed on your wiki (example). [38] [39]
  • It will soon no longer be possible to order printed books of wiki articles via PediaPress. You will still be able to create PDF files. [40]

RE Igloo

Hey,

@Kangaroopower: Hi, sorry I missed your original message somehow. By loading external resources from github, it enables github to track users who are visiting Wikipedia, and get information like referer headers and their IP addresses. This is mainly important because there is no warning to a user that "By using this script, your information will be sent to a third-party site that may track you.". Overall, it's just easier to just serve the scripts from a wikipage or tool labs if absolutely necessary. Legoktm (talk) 22:30, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

Recent software changes

  • The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf14) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on July 17. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on July 22, and to all Wikipedias on July 24 (calendar).
  • CirrusSearch was removed as the primary search method from Wikimedia Commons and the Spanish (es) Wikipedia due to a high server load. The plan to enable it on the Dutch (nl), Japanese (ja), Polish (pl) and Russian (ru) Wikipedias was also postponed to a later date. [48] [49] [50]
  • The tool that stores information about languages (CLDR) was updated to its latest version. You can still help translate language names into your own language so they can be used in the sidebar and other places. [51]
  • Translation memory for newly translatable pages should now offer more suggestions. [52] [53]
  • A tool to convert MediaWiki pages to LaTeX is now available on Tool Labs. [54]

VisualEditor news

  • Tablet users visiting the mobile version of Wikimedia wikis will be able to use a special version of VisualEditor starting on July 31. You can test the new tool by choosing the beta version of the mobile view in the Settings menu. Feedback is welcome. [55]
  • All windows in VisualEditor have now a new design. Main action buttons will always be located in the top bar and will use simple words rather than icons. [56]
  • You can now easily open links inside the link editor, for example to see their target. [57]

Vandalism (again) at CS Universitatea Craiova (football)

Hello!

You semi-protected yesterday CS Universitatea Craiova (football), but the editor is now back, using a registered account this time (Roby Iliescu). He deleted information from the History section, the Kit manufacturer info, the Ownership and finances section etc. Referenced material was eliminated.

It seems that he used to edit the encyclopedia as WP:LOGGEDOUT for the extremely "dirty work" like removing clearly legitimate stuff (the infobox, uncontroversial categories, the squad of the team) or adding "funny text" ("People coming to the game and pretend to keep this team receives social assistance free." / "nickname = The Clone" / "Mircea Sandu fucks the mayor of Craiova Lia Olguța Vasilescu and give to her 2 millions of euros."): [68] [69]

While logged out he also disruptively removed CS Universitatea Craiova (football) from the list participating at 2014–15 Liga I: [70]

Can you please restore the stable version and sanction the editor?

Unfortunately the editor is back and is making again disruptive edits: [71] [72]. He is altering an information that is taken from the official site of Liga Profesionistă de Fotbal, that is a Romanian governing body that runs the Liga I, the top professional division of the Romanian football league system.
Taking into account the fact that the editor is also an autoconfirmed user (he controls the account User:Roby Iliescu), can you please full protect the article for an amount of time? 79.117.156.114 (talk) 21:45, 24 July 2014 (UTC)

Recent software changes

  • The latest version of MediaWiki (1.24wmf15) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on July 24. It will be added to non-Wikipedia wikis on July 29, and to all Wikipedias on July 31 (calendar).
  • You can now download the latest version of the anti-vandalism tool Huggle.

VisualEditor news

  • You can now create, edit, and view HTML comments in VisualEditor. [73] [74]
  • The cancel button in VisualEditor toolbar has been removed. You can still use the Read tab and the Back button in your browser to cancel your edit. [75]
  • If you try to use a template which has no suggested or required parameters in TemplateData, you will now be asked to add the parameters. [76] [77]
  • You will no longer be able to edit a page if you can't create it, for example on pages protected against recreation. [78] [79]

Future software changes

  • You will soon be able to filter Meta-Wiki's user rights log by wiki and user. [80] [81]
  • Wikidata will soon be able to store data about article status, for example "good article" or "featured article". If your wiki has highlighted content, please make sure it is on Wikidata's list. [82]

New huggle 3.1 is going to be released soon

Hi Legoktm, we are to release a new major version of huggle, but we did receive almost no feedback from our beta testing team, which you are a part of (see https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Huggle/Members). It would be of a great help if you could download it (if you have windows, all you need to do is getting http://tools.wmflabs.org/huggle/files/huggle3.1.0beta.exe and putting it to a folder where you have installed huggle) and test it. You can always get a help with making it @ #huggle connect!

Major changes:

  • Multisite support - you can now log in to unlimited number of wikis in 1 huggle session and get a huge queue of all edits made to these wikis. This is good for smaller projects which gets overlooked often.
  • Ranged diffs - you can select multiple revisions and get a huge diff that display all changes done to them.
  • Fixes of most of bug reports we had so far
