[edit]Hello, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I've noticed that you have been adding your signature to some of your article contributions, such as the edit you made to Gordon Kennett. This is a simple mistake to make and is easy to correct. For future reference, the need to associate edits with users is taken care of by an article's edit history. Therefore, you should use your signature only when contributing to talk pages, the Village Pump, or other such discussion pages. For a better understanding of what distinguishes articles from these type of pages, please see What is an article?. Again, thank you for contributing, and enjoy your Wikipedia experience! Thank you. Welcome
[edit]Hello Lawson Speedway, and welcome to Wikipedia!
There are various guidelines to help newcomers understand how Wikipedia works and how to edit it. The Introduction to Wikipedia might be a good starting point, and some more are mentioned below. Frequently newcomers do not at first grasp how Wikipedia works, and so they find that many of their edits are immediately undone, and this can be offputting. However, it is just a matter of putting in a little time, and learning as you do so. Some particularly important points sometimes not grasped by newcomers are explained in the policy on What Wikipedia is not.
Here are some some further pages which you may find helpful:
- The Five pillars of Wikipedia:
- Articles must conform to a neutral point of view
- Wikipedia is free content, and submissions must not violate the copyright policy
- Information should be verifiable
- How to write a great article
- Provide an Edit summary
- Use the Show preview button
- How to edit a page
- The Tutorial
- The Village pump and Help desk, for questions about Wikipedia
- The reference desk, for questions which are not about Wikipedia

Your recent edits
[edit]Hello, welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for uploading your speedway images to the Commons – they will be a valuable addition to speedway articles. However, please don't add comments such as "Photos are available on Wiki Commons" to the bottom of speedway related pages. This does not conform to Wikipedia's manual of style and it's not much use unless these images are linked. Consider adding the images to the article instead, or using the template commons category. Also, if you have any concerns about the accuracy of an article's content, please use the article's talk page to discuss improvements, and not the article. If you need any help, contact me on my talk page, contact the above user, or visit the help desk. All the best. Barret (talk) 12:32, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
Option to upload photos denied until a certain status achieved, so the comment "photo available" was to alert the entry compiler to the fact that a photo could be attached. This appears to have worked for a number of entries when I revisited. I have hundreds of speedway related photos from 1974 to 1978 that I wish to make available to any compiler of entries on Speedway riders. Lawson Speedway (talk) 10:40, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Additionally, the majority of speedway rider entries have their talk takend externally to a motorcycling organisation, which means my message may get lost among countless general forum commentaries. I regretably do not have loads of time to devote to the task so am taking shortcuts ultimately to improve entries in WikipediaLawson Speedway (talk) 10:42, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
- I'm not suggesting you upload the images to Wikipedia. Images uploaded to the Commons can be displayed on Wikipedia. It would probably be easier and quicker if you did this instead of the messages you are adding to the end of articles which I am having to remove. All you need to do is add the image to the infobox like this, or if the article has no infobox copy this example (just replace the file name). Regards. Barret (talk) 15:02, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
- Hi I have noticed you are unsuccessfully attempting to add images to articles. You probably weren't aware, but adding the URL will not work. You need to type this for example (just replacing Filename.jpg) to add the image to an infoxbox, or something like this (replacing Filename.jpg and caption) to add the image to the article. Take a look here for more info: Wikipedia:Images. I hope this helps. Cheers. Barret (talk) 19:54, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
The learning curve is not so steep now :-) Successfully adding photos to entries. thanks. Lawson Speedway (talk) 15:30, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
Sorted out my loading and editing problems (misunderstandings). Have successfully added dozens of photos to speedway riders plus Infoboxes where lacking, for uniformity. I have many more photos and negatives to scan and if the later photos are in better condition, I will replace earlier ones while still loading to blanks for other riders of the 1970s.Lawson Speedway (talk) 12:11, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
Long Eaton Speedway
[edit]Any Long Eaton Speedway photographs? --palmiped | Talk 17:48, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
None that I have found in my files (or that I can recollect as likely to find). Photo period in speedway started in 1974 and was finished really in 1977 (but I did have an occasional sorty in 1978).Lawson Speedway (talk) 10:06, 5 August 2009 (UTC)
Looks like I was active during the "down" years of Long Eaton. That would explain why I have no photos.Lawson Speedway (talk) 10:37, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Harry Bastable, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.cradleyspeedway.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/riders/hbastable.htm. This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. File source problem with File:Chris Morton VWGP.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Chris Morton VWGP.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 23:09, 24 August 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 23:09, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Hi! Is John Dews supposed to be a redirect to John Dews (speedway rider), or an attempt to rename the latter? lavender|(formerlyHMSSolent|lambast 08:18, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
A slip up trying to work out how to do links :-( Lawson Speedway
- Well, if you're trying to link John Dews with the latter, you should use the #REDIRECT Target page wikicode instead, replacing "Target page" with the name of the intended article - in this case being John Dews (speedway rider). I would strongly suggest moving the contents of the latter article to the former, however, as no other articles of subjects with such a name currently exist on WP. Should you require further assistance on this, post a reply below. lavender|(formerlyHMSSolent|lambast 08:35, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
I've created a page for John Dews (speedway rider) and got asked for stuff by Wiki that I had no idea about. I am happy with the full page and that is all I want to survive. Lawson Speedway

Speedy deletion nomination of John Dews
[edit]Hello Lawson Speedway,
I wanted to let you know that I just tagged John Dews for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. Take a look at our suggestions for essential content in short articles to learn what should be included.
If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.
You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Carbinga (talk) 14:31, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
Article syntax
[edit]Could you look at the changes made to Steve Holden. They show some syntax changes you need to make when you add new articles. For example, the photo is done wrong in the infobox. "df=yes" (stands for day first) needs to be added or those crazy Brit editors go bonkers because the date is in the wrong format. Dates are never wikilinked. Bgwhite (talk) 05:44, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
- You did it again with Brian Collins (speedway rider). Please do things correctly. I and other people have better things to do than correct your mistakes. Also, a Wikipedia links is not an external link. Forum posts should not be added. Please do DEFAULTSORT correctly. Bgwhite (talk) 04:54, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
- I appreciate the support - increasing Wiki content is a team effort. As a novice with writing software style and not understanding the jargon, I will continue to learn by doing and hope that people have patience with me. I started by copying an entry then changing info content, so some mistakes may creep in from the original template, as I worked within the structure already existing. I will also struggle to provide quality references as most info on Speedway riders not in the top echelon of the sport, tend to be on fansites and forums. Plus my personal knowledge - I was present at matches as a photographer. By starting off a page for a speedway rider, my hope is that others will expand it, even the person themself if still living. I promote these Wiki entries through the Facebook group "Speedway Friends" with over 9000 members, so I believe it is worthwhile to continue, even if imperfectly laid out (as that can always be corrected later) but a perfect blank page is worthless. With respect.
- You are still doing it. Please be more careful. Yes, it can always be corrected later, but that just wastes my time and other people's time. Please look at the changes made to Laurie Etheridge. Four other editor's time was wasted on this article. Not the changes and add them into your template. Bgwhite (talk) 18:59, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
Lawson Speedway, better use the "Preview" button before saving. This will save us all time and effort. Thanks, Magioladitis (talk) 07:24, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

[edit] Hello! Thank you for your recent contributions to Hugh Saunders speedway. I did have one note for you. I am working on a maintenance project to clean up Category:Pages using infoboxes with thumbnail images. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this: |image=
, instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do: |image=SomeImage.jpg
. There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption
. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks!! Speedy deletion nomination of Hugh Saunders speedway
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Hugh Saunders speedway requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. - Please consider that (1) as a niche sport, and (2) we are going back 40 years, that traditional printed sources are rarely available for club riders unless they reached the pinnacles of the sport (e.g. Champions). As a niche sport in particular, many publications are "self-published" as the income from sales will not satisfy publishing houses. I have only made entries where I have personally known the riders, through my time as a Sports Journalist in the 1970s, Team Photographer, and as Life Member of the World Speedway Riders Association. I am also a member of the Royal Historical Society and have post-grad qualifications, meaning I do do research.
- The rider under discussion was not a major player but he is part of the history of Speedway and still loved by fans from that era. His entry adds to the greater history of the Clubs he rode for and to lost his entry would be pity. Please allow time for further research, as the appeal has gone out to the speedway community of promoters, riders, and fans for more data. Given more time, the hope and desire is to increase the entry to a better standard. Thank you for reading this. Lawson Speedway (talk) 10:05, 20 November 2022 (UTC)
- I can see double standards on Wikipedia about notability. A football referee is deemed worthy of entry but a motor sportsman is not.
- The referee is probably not a recognisable name but the speedway rider can be named by countless fans for his contribution to the sport and the teams he would have ridden for. Yet one has a bio and the other is denied. Lawson Speedway (talk) 13:08, 12 December 2022 (UTC)

- This is the same appeal as for Phil Michaelides, but the situation is identical.
Lawson Speedway (talk) 10:06, 20 November 2022 (UTC)
The article Brendan Shilleto has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
No evidence found of any notability, source is a self-published book from the article creator, and nothing better could be found.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Fram (talk) 08:54, 21 November 2022 (UTC)
- Please reflect on the problems involved in recording the bio of a minor player in a niche sport and why I start with basics and a "stub" to open up to other researchers to expand the entry. Wikipedia did not exist 40+ years ago, so contemporary media has gone.
- While not a top rank rider, Brendan did ride for a notable club and is part of their history. To remove riders like him is like building a jigsaw but leaving pieces out. My books are not lightweight and to disrespect because self-published is to ignore: I knew the riders I am entering on Wiki, I worked as a Journalist in the 1970s (have been a member of the NUJ) and am a member of the World Speedway Riders Association (WSRA), currently also a member of the Royal Historical Society. The entry is a Work-In-Progress and, by starting, is an announcement to the Speedway community of promoters, riders and fans to look out their books, scrapbooks, programmes, magazines etc.
- I respectfully request time for the entry to expand. I have already received thanks from family and friends for creating entries, so they are appreciated and recognised as a part of the fabric, no matter how minute, of a world sport. Lawson Speedway (talk) 11:06, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

- It is unfortunate that Billy Burton has a big existence in the digital world but not analogue publishing. His importance (for an entry on Wiki) is that he rode for a number of clubs and is part of their history. Removing him is like taking a piece from the jigsaw picture of a club and leaving it incomplete.
- An appeal is going out today to the speedway community of promoters, riders and fans, for more data to add to his profile. Lawson Speedway (talk) 11:29, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

[edit]Hi Lawson Speedway! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia—it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. Images in infoboxes
[edit]Hi, thank you for your contributions. In addition to my note about minor edits above, please also be aware that images in infoboxes only need the filename, not the while File: template, as per WP:IBI. Thank you. -Kj cheetham (talk) 12:56, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi
- I copy and paste the link from the upload page, so not sure what I am doing wrong. Lawson Speedway (talk) 13:01, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, that link is for images outside of the infobox. You don't need the link inside, only the filename itself. As an example, this is how I corrected one of them: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bob_Coles&diff=1195585817&oldid=1195584554 -Kj cheetham (talk) 13:08, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- I may have been copying a html link for outside of Wiki then. I have the hang of it now, thanks Lawson Speedway (talk) 14:05, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- It doesn't seem quite right still, as on Tony Lomas it's still in the thumbnail in the infobox. I've fixed most of the other ones manually already for you in any case. -Kj cheetham (talk) 14:09, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- I don't get it then. There are 2 options for the link once I have uploaded and one is for use in Wiki. "To use the file in a wiki, copy this text into a page:"
- It seems fine in Preview so I publish. Lawson Speedway (talk) 14:53, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- The whole link for use it Wiki is just for outside infoboxes, for inside you only need the filename itsef.
- e.g. if it gives you the link as you literally just need the "Melvyn Taylor, speedway rider.jpg" part (without the quotes). The caption can do in another infobox parameter if need be.
- Really it's not a major issue though unless you're doing 100s, as I can always fix them manually in due course. :) -Kj cheetham (talk) 15:01, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for that. If only if it had been clearer on the Upload instructions.
- I don't do this often but, when I do, I tend to try and get as many photos up as possible. Hopefully, I won't be making any more work for you. Lawson Speedway (talk) 15:08, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- Glad we got it sorted in the end! I don't tend to ever upload photos myself so I'm not sure what the interface looks like. Keep up the good work! -Kj cheetham (talk) 16:45, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
