Sourcing requirements on Wikipedia
[edit]Hello, Larndt12!
I just wanted to let you know that I have reverted your change to List of best-selling music artists in the United States. As the article notes, the list is based on one source only - certified sale units by the RIAA. Michael Jackson's certified sale units are documented here.
Wikipedia requires that all content meet verifiability policy, using reliable sources. What source is reliable can depend on the context - for instance, in this article, only one source applies, since the article is based on that source entirely. In some articles, sources like Rolling Stone magazine or Billboard would suffice. If you ever aren't sure, you might ask at an article's talk page or at the reliable sources noticeboard.
If you have general questions about using Wikipedia, I recommend the Wikipedia:Teahouse, which is meant to be a welcoming environment for newcomers. :) Since I see you haven't been officially welcomed yet, I'm going to leave you a "welcome mat" at the top of the page - it's my favorite, with lots of useful links.
Sorry I had to undo this particular change, but please don't be discouraged. We can use the help around here. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:54, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
- Oh, one more thing - after leaving the note here, I happened to notice that somebody else had reverted your change to the article on Michael Jackson. One of those changes was to alter "He wears the crown as the King Of Pop because no artist has broken his record of selling nearly 60 million copies of a single Album (Thriller)" to "He wears the crown as the King Of Pop because no artist has broken his record of selling over 100 million copies of a single Album (Thriller)". This is a quote from a book. Quotes should never, ever be changed unless you know that the author was misquoted. It doesn't matter if you have updates to the figure or believe he or she was wrong; it's a quote. We don't alter what people said. If quotes are mistaken, it is sometimes appropriate to remove them from the article, but you should generally take that up at the talk page.
- You must cite a source for new information you add to articles, and you should never change information in a way that suggests it is supported by a source that does not support it. You changed many facts in the Michael Jackson article without adding sources in ways that might have misled our readers into thinking that the sources already cited supported those changes. Our verifiability policy is one of our three core content policies; as a website that is open to editing by anyone, it is essential that our readers and other editors be able to fact-check everything we add. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:01, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
Hello, and thank you for your recent contribution. I appreciate the effort you made for our project, but unfortunately I had to undo your edit because I believe the article was better before you made that change. Feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions. Thank you! Asdklf; (talk) 03:46, 23 December 2014 (UTC)
Non-free rationale for File:Paris Jackson.jpeg
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Paris Jackson.jpeg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Replaceable fair use File:Paris Jackson.jpeg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:Paris Jackson.jpeg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Ronhjones (Talk) 19:33, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
