Welcome, but be careful

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Here are suggested readings: WP:SECONDARY and WP:COI. The gist of these guidelines are:

  • Wikipedia prefers citations to reviews and books, not primary journal references (tens of thousands appear annually). Citing secondary sources is the encyclopedic style.
  • Do not cite yourself or your colleagues. It's called conflict of interest. Many new editors cite themselves mainly. That behavior is unacceptable.

If you have questions, many editors can offer advice. Happy editing. --Smokefoot (talk) 11:15, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the welcoming. Regarding the use of primary sources: resistive switching using oxides is quite modern and I am not aware of any reviews on it that are relevant to the tantalum oxide page. The reason I used two sources is because they add information: the Adv. Func. Mat. paper that was edited out was describing academic research and the Nature Mat. paper shows that it is relevant to the industry as well (it was published by Samsung).
As for self-citation, as a scientist I see enough of that. I didn't include any of my own papers even though at least one of them is relevant to the page. I don't know any of the authors that I cited (or even work in the same state). I find your warning and accusation uncalled for. --La2O3 (talk) 17:37, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize for the accusation. It is a recurring (I mean really common) pattern here for new editors who add lots of primary references to cite themselves or their pals. In fact, I left almost all of your references in this and related articles because they looked good to me. I removed a 2014 paper and comments that are time dependent. Good luck with your editing, and dont let my imperfect introduction deter you from continuing. --Smokefoot (talk) 17:41, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
