The Flag of Northern Ireland

Hi Katie, You've only got to do a google images search on "Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games" to get an idea about what is going on here. The problem on Wikipedia is that attempts are being made by some to overstate the opposition to the Northern Ireland flag. For example, somebody inserts in the lede the fact that the flag is used at the Commonwealth games, and then someone like Snowded will come along and remove it. You can see how he then lectures myself and Jonto on the need to supply sources. How is one supposed to operate in an environment like that when sources have been supplied on many occasions? Part of the problem is that a lot of the opposition to the Northern Ireland flag comes from outside Northern Ireland. It could typically come from Norway, Wales, or the USA, from people who have a romantic notion of Northern Ireland not being a part of the UK, but who don't live there themselves. So do we just sit back and allow the facts to be distorted by Welsh Nationalists and romantics? There was even a video supplied of the flag being used recently at the Queen's 90th birthday. It was typically denied as evidence. There are photographs of the flag flying above Carrickfergus town hall, but these are denied. You can easily do a google images search or a google street search. That's the kind of devious denial behaviour that administrators need to sort out. Finally, the first few paragraphs of this article http://www.theirishstory.com/2015/02/09/the-northern-ireland-conflict-1968-1998-an-overview/#.V066q632bmI should leave you in no doubt that the republicans in Northern Ireland are only a minority, and while it's fair to mention on Wikipedia that the Northern Ireland flag is rejected by republicans, it is also fair to qualify this by adding that they are only a minority. Attempts are consistently made to portray republican opposition on a par with loyalist/unionist approval. The article is currently worded in a way that implies that the flag is only being supported by fringe elements, and that is not true. Centuryofconfusion (talk) 10:43, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

Centuryofconfusion I'm not a mediator or here to judge who is right or who is wrong. The only thing I care about is that the edit warring has stopped. This dispute has already been done to death and you're very close to a block. Work it out on the talk page. Katietalk 13:46, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

Katie, Most of my edits have been on the talk page so I don't see how that makes me close to a block. Anyway, you said you're not interested, so I'll leave it at that. Centuryofconfusion (talk) 15:05, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

2016 Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Search Community Survey

The Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation has appointed a committee to lead the search for the foundation’s next Executive Director. One of our first tasks is to write the job description of the executive director position, and we are asking for input from the Wikimedia community. Please take a few minutes and complete this survey to help us better understand community and staff expectations for the Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director.

Thank you, The Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Search Steering Committee via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:49, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

A question about f8 procedure

Katie,

I see you have been actively helping to bring down the F8 backlog. Thanks.

I ran into something today I like to run by somebody. I hope you don't mind, I've been pestering editors at the talk page and thought I should try someone else :)

I'm relatively new to this so I've made some observations which may not be universal but particular to the dates I've chosen. I've noticed that the same names pop up again and again. In many cases, these are fairly old uploads, and I simply assumed that an editor started off thinking that images should be uploaded to Wikipedia and later learned they should be uploading to Commons.

However, I decided to check one name today. I was looking at:

File:New Firhill.jpg

and decided to look at the editors recent contributions.

I found this:

File:RyanScully.jpeg

uploaded a few days ago.

My question is whether we ought to make it part of our procedure to look for situations such as this and encourage the editors to directly upload to Commons.

I get that a relatively new editor, working on the first photo upload may automatically assume that it should go to Wikipedia and it's no big deal that if it qualifies for Commons we can move it over to Commons. I also get that an editor may have uploaded quite a few photos some time ago, but if they qualify for common shouldn't we be urging them to upload directly to common so the the F8 backlog doesn't keep being repopulated by prolific photographers?

I only checked one instance and it's possible this is a one-off but just wanted some feedback on the general concept before I look further.--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:22, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

@Sphilbrick: I agree with you, and I run into the same thing. (George M. Cohan photos and sheet music covers are running out my ears today.) The upload wizard has been greatly improved over the last couple of years, and it now makes a point to tell people that if it's a freely licensed file, they should take it to Commons and even sends them to the Commons upload wizard. Beyond that, I'm not sure there's much more we can do. We can't really prohibit GFDL or CC-BY-SA uploads here.
Honestly, I think the biggest problem is Commons itself, and its general state of inaccessibility to people not familiar with our little ecosystem here. I was going to say 'unfriendliness' but that's not exactly the right word. It's intimidating to me, I guess, and I've been around ten years now – imagine what it's like to Joe Blow who has photos of the Grand Canyon he wants to put up. Katietalk 15:27, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the prompt response. I actually find the Commons image upload wizard more intuitive than the Wikipedia one but that's an unfair commoncomparison for two reasons. First, the only time I use the Wikipedia image upload is for logos which aren't exactly typical uploads. Second all my photo uploads are two common so I'm used to it. I can imagine it might be intimidating to new users.
However, I'm not so concerned about Joe Blow might want to upload some photos he took. Let him choose the easiest way of uploading and we are happy to help clean up the necessary. My concern is about the prolific photographer or public domain photo researcher who wants to contribute dozens or even hundreds of photographs. I'd like to encourage them to use commons.I am now wondering if some people started uploading to Wikipedia and continue to do so despite the suggestion because they don't see any downside. They upload to Wikipedia some mysterious bot transfers the image to commons and everything works fine. They may not realize they are generating work for hard toiling admin's who have to do some manual steps.
I didn't hear that it's a bad idea to encourage them so I think I'll try.--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:15, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

Flag of Northern Ireland (again)

Hello, I've imposed another page protection for two weeks, and had a slight "run in" with an editor on the talk page and his own talk page after I warned him about his so-called reversion to "a stable version". If you have the time or inclination, I'd be happy if you could chack my actions here: I'm willing to be guided to do differently if you think I should have acted differently (part of me thinks I have been too lax in not handing out some blocks on this occasion, but since I'm trying to get people to go through a process searching out reliable sources in Countries of the United Kingdom about the flag issue, I am trying to avoid antagonising people here.) Regards!  DDStretch  (talk) 12:37, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

@Ddstretch: Just checking in while I'm on vacation (where there's now a tropical storm warning, tyvm) but I'll take a quick look later today or tonight. Don't be shy about using the locks or the block hammer there, though. I think their emotions get in the way of logic and facts. Katietalk 13:04, 6 June 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. If you have the time, I would be grateful if you looked over the interactions between myself and User:Gob Lofa on Talk:Flag of Northern Ireland and his talk page here. I suspect I will block him and I feel it will be for a number of weeks given his previous blocks for disruptive and argumentative behaviour. He is just being totally disingenuous in his "points" and insults towards me on process and ability. Sorry for asking you this when you are on holiday, but I suspect you know more about this situation than many other administrators.  DDStretch  (talk) 14:50, 6 June 2016 (UTC)
I'd be grateful too. Gob Lofa (talk) 15:02, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

Request for a copy of the deleted article

Hi, My name is Kate Maksimova and I work for Itransition – a software development company. I'm here to contribute information on my band. I am aware of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines and I will adhere strictly to them. In fact, my company had already tried to publish an article in 2007 and 2012, but in both cases it was deleted. The reason why [Itransition’s page was deleted 9 March 2007] is absence of reliable sources, while the reason why it was deleted on 13 March 2012 is G4: Recreation of a page that was deleted per a deletion discussion. However, since 2012 Itransition’s reference list has grown enough to correspond to Wikipedia’s general notability guidelines and I would like to write the article from scratch. My edits will be restricted to talk page and I am going ask for Wikipedians' help to create an informative, bias-free and clear article. Could you please share a copy of the deleted Itransiton article for my research?

I would highly appreciate any recommendations and advice on the publishing process. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kotsclefa (talkcontribs) 07:30, 15 June 2016 (UTC)

Unblock request

Lady of the sweets, I'd like to request that Romanian-and-proud (talk · contribs) be unblocked under very strict conditions as I am hopeful that I can turn him into a productive and undisruptive Wikipedian. I'd like for him to be able to edit only talk pages, if that can be done, so that we can discuss his proposed changes for NPOV issues and the like and then I'll post them once we've agreed on the wording. He's admittedly short-tempered and sometimes rude, but his edits are not malicious. I think that with some extreme mentorship on my part, he's salvageable, but he needs to understand that he's on a short leash. Please let us know if there's anything further that we need to do to get this accomplished. I've told him about WP:ARBEE, although I'm not sure that he's actually read it yet. He's watching my talkpage, but I'll tell him to check in on his own for any further information or instructions that he might have to follow.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 01:20, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

@Sturmvogel 66: Sorry, but I can't unblock him. It's a CheckUser block for sockpuppetry by User:Iaaasi, who has been community banned. He has a long and distinguished socking history. We're not allowed to undo CU blocks, period, and it looks like this guy needs to find another hobby since he's been at this for more than five years.
We have a standard offer for sockmasters but he has to not sock for six months and then convince an admin to make a ban appeal at AN; I seriously doubt any such appeal will be successful at this point. Sadly, there are some editors we just can't rehabilitate. I'm willing to listen to just about any blocked user's appeal, but I have no authority with this one. :-( Katietalk 18:53, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
Hunh, I'm not sure that Iaaasi and my guy are the one and the same. Iaaasi seems to be more of a Hungarian partisan than a Romanian one like Romanian-and-proud. Let me poke around some more, but thanks for checking on this for me.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 19:09, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
I'm fairly certain that this guy isn't Iaaasi as the pattern of edits is different, so what's my next step?--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 19:20, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
@Amanda: As you placed the block, would you chip in here? Katietalk 21:26, 21 June 2016 (UTC)
You should probably take a look at Wikipedia:Long-term abuse/Iaaasi. He seems to be a gifted liar. Katietalk 22:13, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

Thank you and a question

Thank you for the revdel on Nana, the True Key of Pleasure. I wondered if this was too small or inconsequential a copyvio to tag? Or should any copyright violation, no matter how small, get tagged for revdel? — Gorthian (talk) 03:22, 27 June 2016 (UTC)

@Gorthian: You're welcome - all part of the service here at Katie's House of Janitorial Sciences. I saw that title and thought it was a children's book about their grandma's chocolate cake and her penchant for buying too many toys.
RD1 is for serious copyvios that need to be completely removed from an article's history. We can often get by with simply removing an offending paragraph from the page and leaving it in the history, but if you're in doubt, go ahead and tag it and we'll take a look. We want to err on the side of caution. Don't go tagging every instance of a single sentence for RD1, though, because that's excessive. Just remove it or rephrase it and it will be fine. If you have questions, just ask. :-) Katietalk 10:54, 27 June 2016 (UTC)
Thank you, that makes a lot of sense to me. I was disambiguating Nana when I ran across that doozy of a title. Wikipedia is constantly surprising me; no knowing what's around the next corner! — Gorthian (talk) 16:19, 27 June 2016 (UTC)

This is in regard to that user you just blocked. Any chance this could be hidden from public view? It doesn't personally bother or intimidate me, but I take that as an indirect death threat, which I believe still qualifies. Regards. Amaury (talk) 06:50, 2 July 2016 (UTC)
