Hello
[edit]Your work is great.
I'm an amateur cartographer with a very special niche: maps of artificial whitewater slalom courses. As far as I can tell, the only other people who do this are the architects who design and build the courses, and their work is rarely available and never released to the public domain. I work mainly from satellite photos and pictures people post on Flicker and the like. I upload the maps to Wikimedia for use with articles which I mostly start and write. As a professional cartographer, could you take a look at some of my maps and offer your wisdom? (I live in the Washington DC area and would like to attend your periodic Wikipedia cartographer meetings.)
All of my maps are attached to articles in this list: List of artificial whitewater courses. The best ones are: Lee Valley White Water Centre, U.S. National Whitewater Center, Pau-Pyrénées Whitewater Stadium, & Adventure Sports Center International.
Thanks. HowardMorland (talk) 19:50, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
- Those look pretty good to me. Only change I think I'd make is I'd make the titles a different color than the water feature labels to make them more distinct - and try not to have the title on top of anything, the National Center and Adventure Center maps look a little nicer because of that - if you have to make the map bigger to get a big enough blank space, that's ok. There is a cartographer's convention of use blue and italics to label water features, but I think the white is working for you - on the Pau-Pyrenees I might be tempted to switch the river label to blue to distinguish it as not being part of the course. Don't be afraid to rotate text if it will help the label follow the feature it's labeling better - for example on the National Center map, I'd be tempted to angle the Long Channel label to be parallel to the channel. Nice job. Kmusser (talk) 20:41, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks, again. Very helpful. Let me know the next time Wikipedia cartographers meet in Washington, D.C. HowardMorland (talk) 18:54, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
I could use a map
[edit]I see you've done a number of eastern shore river maps, and I would appreciate it if you could provide one for the Honga River. Thanks in advance, Mangoe (talk) 14:58, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
- Sure, will do. Kmusser (talk) 15:22, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
- Done! Kmusser (talk) 18:58, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you very much. I made a couple of attempts myself but my image tools are pretty poor. This is much better than what I would have done. Mangoe (talk) 19:10, 29 January 2012 (UTC)

Pearl River (China)
[edit]Hi Kmusser,
I am writing a thesis using your map of Pearl River in China. As there is a minimum requirement on the resolution of figures, I am wondering if you could kindly send me the GIS data of the river?
Thank you very much.

- That map was made mostly in Photoshop, I don't have any GIS files, but you are welcome to the Photoshop file. I've uploaded it to http://www.fantasymaps.com/stuff/xi.psd . If you want to recreate the map in GIS, you can get everything except the basin boundary from http://www.naturalearthdata.com/downloads/ (which should actually be better than what I used). For the basin boundary I used http://eros.usgs.gov/#/Find_Data/Products_and_Data_Available/gtopo30/hydro/asia . Kmusser (talk) 19:26, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Hello
[edit]Hello Kmusser,
I am a student and I am considering the Ohio River Basin as a study area for research. I am also interested in the counties in that area. If possible, may I use your Ohio River Basin + county map GIS data for research?
I would truly appreciate this. Thank you for posting at the very least!

Disambiguation link notification for April 26
[edit]Hi. When you recently edited List of wadis of Djibouti, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Lake Assal (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

[edit]Hi Karl,
Your map of the dams on the Columbia River is great. Would you mind if I used it in my presentation for my Masters oral defense? With credit, of course. I'm studying the influence of hydroelectric dams on amphibians and reptiles.
Apologies if I'm not using your talk page correctly. I created a wikipedia account simply to contact you.
Cheers. Sirtalis (talk) 18:48, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
- You are welcome to use the map, good luck on your defense. Kmusser (talk) 15:33, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
Airports Maps
[edit]Hello, Could you update the maps of Panama, Bogota and Fort Lauderdale? All these airports include significant changes, new routes and some routes terminated. Thanks for your work and collaboration Luisfege (talk) 21:58, 18 June 2012 (UTC)

Tremendous Watershed Maps
[edit]Wanted to say thanks for your remarkably clear watershed maps where the information is presented in a manner that makes it extremely easy for the viewer to grasp and retain. The Colorado and Snake river maps, for example, are models of clarity and utility. These maps and the others like them have been a big help to me in my attempts to better understand the geography of the United States. As far as requests go, I could easily make a dozen of them, but I was wondering if it would be possible for you to create higher resolution versions of some of your earlier maps - I'm thinking of the Hudson/Mohawk and Delaware maps in particular. Thanks again for your great work. Obo (talk) 18:41, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. The day job hasn't been leaving me much time for mapping, but some of my early ones could definitely use a re-do, will put that on the to do list. Kmusser (talk) 19:34, 4 July 2012 (UTC)
- ...and just like that, there they are. Thanks! Obo (talk) 04:02, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, I looked and still had the originals at a higher resolution so was a simple upload, when I have more time I'd still like to do a complete re-do of some of those.
- ...and just like that, there they are. Thanks! Obo (talk) 04:02, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
Hi, you request maps to improve the quality of this article but there are already two maps. Can you please clarify what you need? :) --Rskp (talk) 06:47, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
- I was just categorizing an already existing map request, I didn't even check to see if it had been fulfilled. Looking at it now I agree, the article seems well served. Kmusser (talk) 13:46, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. Thanks also for the nudge regarding the Occupation of the Jordan Valley article. I've added a map which considerably improves the article. Thanks a lot. --Rskp (talk) 03:18, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
Notability (geographical features)
[edit]Wikipedia talk:Notability (geographical features): the discussion to make it into a guideline is rekindled. Staszek Lem (talk) 16:07, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for your suggestion regarding an infobox. I've followed the links you suggest but cannot find an appropriate infobox. Do you know of one? --Rskp (talk) 11:32, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
- Wasn't my suggestion, I don't think we have an infobox for campaigns (as opposed to individual battles). Kmusser (talk) 14:20, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
- OK - well nevermind, I suppose a battle infobox would be better than nothing. Will give it ago, as I agree the article looks like its missing something. --Rskp (talk) 04:39, 22 July 2012 (UTC)

Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport Route Map
[edit]I am very impressed with your vast collection of maps. One little typo I noticed: On the Fort Lauderdale Airport route map, there is a dot for Niagra Falls Airport (IAG), but there is no code for it on the map. other than that, your map is very good. Meff56 (talk) 05:33, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for catching that, fixed. Kmusser (talk) 13:54, 13 August 2012 (UTC)
- Two other little things: Allegiant Air added a new nonstop to Asheville ,NC IATA:AVL and Condor's nonstop service to Frankfurt, Germany IATA: FRA has become a summer seasonal destination, it hasn't terminated service to FLL. Meff56 (talk) 14:11, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Can you help me with a map?
[edit]I saw your work on the Maps request page, but it seems a bit dead there. I was wondering if you could help me with a map of Timbuktu. That article has been in need of a good city map for over 2 years. We can work from the OpenStreetMap data that I already edited. I put a request at another map maker as well. What do you think? Cheers, Pim Rijkee (talk) 17:19, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- Probably not from me, what you need is a SVG person that can do the OpenStreetMap to SVG conversion. I've never done that sort of thing, my grasp of SVG is rather limited. Kmusser (talk) 17:56, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for the tip, I'll do some research. Regards, Pim Rijkee (talk) 17:59, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the help
[edit]Getting the map on blob's Park setup in the Infobox. It looks so easy when you did it. It was sooooo painful when I was trying. Again, thank you. LarryGrim (talk) 16:40, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
- No problem, I live just done the street from there :-) Kmusser (talk) 15:47, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
