Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

July 14, 7pm: Virtual Coney Island Meetup + NYC monthly collaboration
Welcome to Wikimedia New York City!

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly online gathering (7-8pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop. To join the meeting from your computer or smartphone, just visit this link. More information about how to connect is available on the meetup page.

Instead of our usual "WikiWednesday" Salon, we'll focus on the WikiProject NYC monthly collaboration and this month's subject of Coney Island.

And rather than Zoom, we'll meet on a proximity chat virtual Coney Island beach and share over topical articles and collaborations.

We look forward to seeing local Wikimedians, but would also like to invite folks from the greater New York metropolitan area (and beyond!) who might not typically be able to join us in person!

7:00pm - 8:00 pm online via WikiConey on Gather

(You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future notifications for NYC-area events by adding or removing your name from this list.)

Raj Gupta page

[edit]

Hi @King of Hearts:, I've just come across the page Raj Gupta, on which you seem to be the first edit of any significance. I think the page currently fulfils no useful purpose as it is a disambiguation page pointing to a single instance of Raj Gupta, a link that doesn't go to an article in WP and is probably not about a notable person anyway. Prior to PRODing it, I had removed a paragraph in which someone had put a load of advertising material for the college of which this Raj Gupta is admissions tutor, together with his telephone number. I think it's not a useful article as it stands, or as it was being used before my edit. If you think it still has value, please do feel free to object! Many best wishes, Elemimele (talk) 13:23, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Forget the above! GB Fan noticed that there was once useful content on the page, but it had been removed by the vandal whose additions I reverted. They've restored the useful content and removed the PROD. All is now well. Elemimele (talk) 15:41, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

TechCrunch Disrupt New York AfD

[edit]

Hello, hope you're well. I am just wondering how you reached a redirect consensus on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/TechCrunch Disrupt New York? Not that it is wholly incorrect, although I expected by expressing delete over redirect myself that the consensus at that point had balanced out somewhat. There was no more view for redirect than delete including the nomination. It's not significant, I am just curious. Thanks! Bungle (talkcontribs) 06:13, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Delete" and "redirect" are kind of interchangeable at AfD; both establish that the subject should not have an independent article, which is the primary purpose of AfD. Whether a redirect is appropriate is better discussed at RfD; it is fine to take a verdict as a byproduct of an AfD discussion where consensus is clear, but when in doubt the conservative approach is to not delete the article and give interested parties the option to send the redirect to RfD if desired. -- King of ♥ 06:20, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. It may have been beneficial to acknowledge and elucidate on this with the closure, especially given there was no more favour for your adjudged consensus than the alternate opinion. I accept that it is, as you duly note, mostly inconsequential. Bungle (talkcontribs) 21:13, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Sunnydale-syndrome" listed at Redirects for discussion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place to address the redirect Sunnydale-syndrome. The discussion will occur at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2021 July 25#Sunnydale-syndrome until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion.
