Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – May 2019

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2019).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • XTools Admin Stats, a tool to list admins by administrative actions, has been revamped to support more types of log entries such as AbuseFilter changes. Two additional tools have been integrated into it as well: Steward Stats and Patroller Stats.

Arbitration

  • In response to the continuing compromise of administrator accounts, the Arbitration Committee passed a motion amending the procedures for return of permissions (diff). In such cases, the committee will review all available information to determine whether the administrator followed "appropriate personal security practices" before restoring permissions; administrators found failing to have adequately done so will not be resysopped automatically. All current administrators have been notified of this change.
  • Following a formal ratification process, the arbitration policy has been amended (diff). Specifically, the two-thirds majority required to remove or suspend an arbitrator now excludes (1) the arbitrator facing suspension or removal, and (2) any inactive arbitrator who does not respond within 30 days to attempts to solicit their feedback on the resolution through all known methods of communication.

I've unprotected it. The original reason for protection no longer applies. SpinningSpark 17:16, 8 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

May 22, 7pm: WikiWednesday Salon and Skill-Share NYC

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our monthly "WikiWednesday" evening salon (7-9pm) and knowledge-sharing workshop at Metropolitan New York Library Council in Midtown Manhattan. Is there a project you'd like to share? A question you'd like answered? A Wiki* skill you'd like to learn? Let us know by adding it to the agenda.

Featuring this month a presentation by Interference Archive guests, and a group discussion on the role of activist archives and building wiki content based on ephemeral publications and oral histories.

To close off the night, we'll also have Wikidojo - a group collaborative writing activity / vaudeville!

We will also follow up on plans for recent and upcoming edit-a-thons, museum and library projects, education initiatives, and other outreach activities.

7:00pm - 9:00 pm at Metropolitan New York Library Council (8th floor) at 599 11th Avenue, Manhattan
(note this month we will be meeting in Midtown Manhattan, not at Babycastles)

The Great Wall of China: Documentary

[edit]

TV Movie 2007, Discovery Channel, National Geographic. The protagonist is Qi Jiguang, an historical character. Geng Zhou, one of his soldiers, and Chang Ang, the Mongol military leader, are historical or fictional? If you don't know very well this documentary, you can see the full video (Part 1, Part 2). Their names can also be changed with other historical characters related with Qi Jiguang. In this site Geng Zhou is renamed Zhou Li. Geng Zhou was probably a fictional character, but in this documentary he is the second main protagonist after Qi Jiguang, then he could have an own page. You could also create the page about that documentary Behind the Great Wall. Please, can you help me, because I'm too busy? Thank you very much. --80.181.64.26 08:23, 18 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Saint Peter

[edit]

The correct way to have the RM re-opened would have been to go through WP:MOVE REVIEW. I suggest you revert yourself and take the matter there. You're also involved having participated in the prior RM closed two days ago. Calidum 18:00, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see the need to go through WP:BURO to revert an out-of-process premature closure. And I opposed it, so I'm not involved in the right direction. -- King of 18:08, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Desmond Napoles

[edit]

Hi King of Hearts. At Talk:Desmond Napoles#Requested move 19 May 2019 I think you could have chosen to relist instead of close. Only four editors gave input, including the one who opened the move request, with two supporting and two opposing the move. I would've liked to see further discussion. In a way, your decision to close the discussion as no consensus essentially means you've participated in the move survey by siding with those against moving the page. --77.173.90.33 (talk) 07:39, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Especially if one of the opposing editors' last comment is on the page is "I think it is still oppose for me. I don't see any evidence that Napoles is a performer at the moment." which clearly shows they do not understand WP:STAGENAME despite me pointing out that whether or not Desmond is a performer is irrelevant. And the other opposing editor's post was so recent that you closed the move request before I could comment on it. --77.173.90.33 (talk) 07:54, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It's not the number of !votes that matter, but the content of the discussion. Reading through the RM I get the impression that what's to be said has already been said, and further discussion is unlikely to result in a consensus to move. -- King of 03:22, 28 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
