Sunday June 5, 12-5pm: Women in Jewish History Edit-a-thon

Join us for a full Sunday of social Wikipedia editing at the Center for Jewish History (drop-in any time!), during which we will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to Women in Jewish History.

All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required.

Expanding coverage of Jewish women on Wikipedia makes these women and their creations discoverable, addresses the gender bias on Wikipedia in a positive way, and works to correct imbalances archival collecting practice and institutional projects that have historically silenced women's narratives.

A training session on editing Wikipedia will be held at 12:30 pm. Experienced Wikipedians will be on-hand to assist throughout the day. Please bring your laptop and power cord; we will have library resources, WiFi, and a list of suggested topics on hand.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Make edits! Ask questions! Be bold!

Time: 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Location: Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues), New York City, New York 10011

Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 15:02, 1 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Stay tuned / sign up early for our June 15 WikiWednesday and other upcoming events.

Protection level of Banter

[edit]

Hi there. Would you be able to unprotect Banter? It's currently editable only by sysops and although there have probably been good reasons for that when you protected it back in 2006, I'm not sure I see why it should continue to be kept like that now. Thanks! Uanfala (talk) 15:23, 5 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) @Uanfala: 'Banter' is currently redirected to 'Conversation'. Why would you want to edit Banter? The redirect makes sense imho. Lectonar (talk) 15:31, 5 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Lectonar: Why would anyone want to edit wikipedia? The fact that something is good enough doesn't mean editors should be kept off it. As far as I know we don't event do that to FAs on controversial topics. My request isn't about the specific minor edit I was planning to make, but about the necessity (or lack of such) of the protection level at this point. Thanks! Uanfala (talk) 15:40, 5 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've reduced the protection to semi. If you think it still needs full protection, you are welcome to revert me. Regards — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:31, 7 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, makes sense. I protected it as it was the standard way to WP:SALT pages back then; create-protection didn't exist. It must have been turned into a redirect without having unprotected the page. -- King of 21:30, 7 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, thanks! I'm wondering if it won't be a good idea if indefinite protections wee automatically removed after a long enough period, say 10 years. Uanfala (talk) 21:36, 7 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

So, I was very offended and angry for a long long time because you had an article about my band deleted. I have since gotten over it and understand wiki's rules, and guidelines. Because of what happened, it is now my goal to have as many articles deleted as physically possible on this website and I thank you for that. It is a passion of mine to have articles erased, removed, and taken off, so no space is wasted. The deletion log and policies are a second bible to me, I have read them over and over and over. I absolutely love having them removed it is a passion of mine, so I thank you fore igniting that. Here's to getting all the imbeciles who have insignificant garbage off of wiki for good, one page at a time #TeamDeletionLog — Preceding unsigned comment added by Makk3232 (talkcontribs) 23:10, 18 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear King: I recently noticed that you deleted a page called Lost and Found (the band). I'm not sure I understand this since nothing on the page is inaccurate. The band was around for 29 years, released 18 CDs, won a Grand Prize in the John Lennon international Songwriting contest twice, played thousands of concerts, visiting hundreds of cities around the world. I need some help understanding how the existence of this page was even on your radar and bothered you enough to invest the time and energy to delete it. I guess what I mean is, what was it about the page that did not meet your standards and how can the authors of the page get around the gate you keep? Segdirb25 (talk) 15:56, 21 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:BAND for our notability standards for bands. -- King of 02:34, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

requesting for un-deletion of Kenneth Uwadi

[edit]

I am requesting for un-deletion of Kenneth Uwadi. It was deleted in 2011 for lack of verifiable sources. The article can be modified with verifiable sources chiomaamadi — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chiomaamadi (talkcontribs) 09:49, 24 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please list them below? -- King of 00:00, 25 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Inquiry of permission of re-using a figure in our book

[edit]

Dear Donaldytong,

This is Dr. Jia He of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. I'm writing this letter to you for inquiring the permission of reusing one of your photos as Figure 1.1(a) of our forthcoming book. The figure is about Burj Khalifa, and the link to this figure is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Burj_Khalifa.jpg

If you don't mind, could you please show me your permission via a confirmative email. The source of this figure will be properly cited. My email address is hj19830507@126.com

The detais of our book are 'You-Lin Xu and Jia He. (2016). Smart Civil Structures. CRC Press, Taylor & Francis Group.'

Please allow me to reuse the aforementioned figure. Thanks very much for your kind help and support. Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes — Preceding unsigned comment added by 158.132.127.192 (talk) 16:16, 27 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You will need to contact Donaldytong for that, I did not take the photo. But in general, you do not need to ask permission to reuse images on Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons as long as they have been released under a free license. This particular one is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 License, which means that you can use it as long as you credit the author and agree to distribute any modified versions of it under the same license if you choose to create any. -- King of 03:52, 28 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

FfD tool

[edit]

Is there a more current tool for closing FfD besides yours (User:King of Hearts/closeffd.js)? And if not, any chance you would be willing to update it? As far as I can tell, it doesn't work anymore and it could be really useful czar 06:04, 28 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Not that I know of, unfortunately. -- King of 00:27, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Inquiry of permission

[edit]

Dear King of Heart,

This is Dr. Jia He. Thanks so much for your kind responses and comments. There is another figure for your permission of reuse. The figure is about Abraj Al Bait Towers, and the link is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Abraj-al-Bait-Towers.JPG

As I can found in that website (see the term of "File History"), you're listed in that form. Could I use that figure in our book as well?

Thanks so much for your kind help and strong support.

Best wishes — Preceding unsigned comment added by 158.132.127.192 (talk) 07:33, 28 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You must be looking at the "File history" section at the bottom. That indicates who uploaded the file, but not necessarily who created it. If you look at the "Summary" section, it indicates that King Eliot is the author of the file. -- King of 00:29, 29 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
