[edit]Hi, just letting you know that this edit http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Butte,_Montana&diff=prev&oldid=321127104 broke a link when a comma was added to the link text. I'm sure it was accidental, and it is now repaired. best wishes, Richard Myers (talk) 03:53, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Capitalization
[edit]Make sure when you change anything within a Wikilink that it does not turn the link red. Even in seemingly minor things like Lowry bill changing it to Lowry Bill turns the link red as you can see. I am going to change the title of the page to Lowry Bill, but just make sure your helpful edits don't also make work for others. To avoid the redlink, you can use piping [[Lowry bill|Lowry Bill]] which will turn out like this: Lowry Bill. --JonRidinger (talk) 18:17, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
I think I may have broken a link when a comma was subtracted from a link text in Theo van Gogh article. Please let me know. Thanks.Kgrad (talk) 18:17, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
- You only break a link if you change the text inside the [[ and ]] markings in editing mode. In this case, the comma was outside the brackets, so it didn't change the internal link. However, it made for a very long "Dutch Minister of Justice Christian Democrat Pieter...", so I added "and" between Minister of Justice and Christian Democrat and changed the dashes to the longer em dashes (—). If you're ever unsure about whether your changes are breaking links, make sure you use "Show preview" for your edits and check to make sure the link is still blue before hitting "Save page". --JonRidinger (talk) 23:13, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

[edit]...for your grammar/phrasing/flow corrections to the Paris article, the best I've seen since years. What is your specialty? Cheers.THEPROMENADER 16:57, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for noticing ! I grew up in a highly grammar-conscious home and worked to add depth to my language skills throughout my time spent in public schools. Having majored in French at Kalamazoo College (class of 1965) – including 6 months' foreign study at France's Université de Caen (Normandie) – I went on to add a teaching minor in Spanish, and became ever more aware of the beauty of a well crafted text. Unlike English – where the comment "Oh, you know what I mean!" is used as an excuse by those who find grammar tedious – other languages require a particular sentence structure where items such as relative clauses must be in their place. Ever since staying late for after-school English classes offered at the high school my siblings and I attended, I have reveled in the delightful challenges of diagramming sentences correctly; I have always found the study of grammar intriguing and exciting.
My specialty: improving any text while maintaining its original integrity. Improper word order and typos jump out at me even though I never look for them... some are lurking in published texts, hoping to remain unnoticed... My joy: speaking French with others who have that ability. Cheers to you. Kgrad (talk) 23:02, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply ; )
- Your language skills were rather obvious, but I had to ask all the same... as a well-read native English-speaker, I too appreciate the well-written word, but I seem to have lost some of the "usage" aspects of the language after living more than twenty years abroad (Paris). Today I have the bad habit of mixing French usage into my English writings, resulting in phrasing that can seem rather '18th-century', or 'Yoda-speak' to put it more humorously.
- I have been passionate about Paris' history (and its modern workings) since I've lived here. Perhaps together we can work towards bringing the Paris article up to FA status? Do let me know if you are interested. Take care ; ) THEPROMENADER 09:49, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

Spacing of emdashes
[edit]Hi, per WP:EMDASH, emdashes (—) should be unspaced. Just a head's up—indopug (talk) 07:22, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
HI,
Thanks for your note. WP:EMDASH does indeed say that these dashes should be unspaced, but I strongly disagree. One reason: Gluing together words in this way leaves orphan blank areas in any printed text that continues on the following line. Another: Spelling rules look down on words that stick together in this way. Third: Where hyphenated words occur, using before-and-after unspaced em-dashes would be a nightmare. Fourth: In reading a dash-containing sentence, the reader pauses briefly before and after the words so set off; the em-dashes tell the reader to pause in much the same way as do parentheses and en-dashes.
In my opinion, in the case of "Just a head's up—" 'up...' is what's needed. It may be that the noun is 'a head's-up'; a noun made up of two stand-alone words needs a hyphen to create one stand-alone word... ]
I love punctuation; depending on its use, it can change the meaning of a sentence — such fun !
Best wishes to you Kgrad (talk) 18:00, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

The note already existing in the article Africa has been modified in a strange way under the alleged reason of neutralization. Many statements have been removed by user user:Omar-Toons to be replaced by the official Moroccan point of view. The user did not even ask for the existing note to be sourced.

Thanks for the CopyEditor's BarnStar ! I appreciate your noticing. You said: "This'll give you something to put on that redlinked user page, if you like." What is a redlinked user page ? I often find the Wiki protocol a bit confusing... Is there a specific place to look up what I don't understand ? Kgrad (talk) 23:29, 18 December 2012 (UTC)
- I wanted to thank you for your copyedits to Ernest Shackleton, and will try to answer your questions above. A WP:red link is a wikilink to a page that does not exist (at least yet). Your WP:user page is at User:Kgrad and is one place where you could put the barnstar, if you wanted. I find that if I don't know a term on Wikipedia, say "foo" as a made-up example, often times I can type in "Wikipedia:foo" or wahtever the term is in the search box (top right corner) and find out. Hope this helps, and thanks again, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:40, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
PS I now see Wikipedia:foo is a link to the page on sandboxes!

a request
[edit]In 2010 you edited the article on John Kiriakou. In doing so you really messed it up. The record shows you made an attempt to clean up after yourself -- but an ineffective one.
I found your replacement of valid references with bracketed numbers: "[1][2][3]" frankly shocking. I assumed you were a complete newcomer. But your contribution history showed you had already made over 500 edits.
It is four years later and I really hope you are a competent contributor now
I am disturbed that you were mucked about with this article, without really knowing what you were doing then.
I am disturbed that no one noticed you removed the completely valid {{infobox person}} for over four years.
No offense, but I think that you made this mistake, even though you were not a beginner, had made over 500 edits, strongly suggests all your early edits should be given a thorough review, in case you made similar mistakes elsewhere. My request to you -- if you now have the experience to recognize and correct bad edits you made in the past, would you please consider undertaking this review yourself? You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. [edit]For copy edits at Ruby Ridge. Would appreciate you looking in again, esp. after the "Under Construction" / "In Use" tag comes down. While most edits you are doing are fixes to text that precedes my work, I am sure there will be more needed from the editing I do. (I am careful, and married to a BELS editor, but one only has so much time.) When it comes to the special syntax being used for the short citations for the government reports in the bibliography, the aim has been to make all citations of same style (both the short ones and the long ones). If they need to change in future, for purposes of honing better to an APS or other citation style standard, I understand. Perhaps ask my help if you address this, and I will help. But as the saying goes, it takes half the time to bring a project to 90% complete, and the other half of the time for the last 10%. My goal is to get it to the 90% as fast as I can. Cheers, discuss in Talk at article, if anything needs be discussed. Thanks again. Le Prof Leprof 7272 (talk) 04:33, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

[edit]"Improved punctuation"
[edit]I notice you've been making improvements to punctuation on various articles, and others have been correcting your corrections. Help me out. At Kerri Strug, the sentence read:
"She beat the competition at the 1996 American Cup in the all-around by almost a half point, which was a huge margin with the scoring system at that time."
You changed it to...
"She beat the competition at the 1996 American Cup in the all-around by almost a half point, something which was a huge margin with the scoring system at that time."
I'm not sure how this was an improvement?
At Fargo, North Dakota, the sentence read:
"It is a cultural, retail, health care, educational, and industrial center for southeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota."
You changed it to...
"It is a cultural, retail, healthcare, educational, and industrial center for southeastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota."

- Here is a link to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Fargo, where "health care" is used repeatedly.
