Conflict of interest in Wikipedia

[edit]

Hi Keywestbookworm. I work on conflict of interest issues in Wikipedia. Almost all your edits to date have focused on Shirrel Rhoades; you've added unsourced, somewhat promotional content about him to several articles, and uploaded a professional headshot of him you that you state is your "own work"; that image is used in several other websites about him as well (e.g here. I'm giving you notice of our Conflict of Interest guideline and Terms of Use, and will have some comments and questions for you below.

Information icon Hello, Keywestbookworm. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you have an external relationship with some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies. Note that Wikipedia's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you.

Comments and question

[edit]

Wikipedia is a widely-used reference work and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps - disclosure and a form of peer review. Please note that there is no bar to being part of the Wikipedia community if you have a conflict of interest; there are just some things we ask you to do (and if you are paid, some things you need to do).

Disclosure is the most important, and first, step. While I am not asking you to disclose your identity (anonymity is strictly protecting by out WP:OUTING policy) would you please disclose if you have some relationship with Shirrel Rhoades, his companies or management, etc? You can answer how ever you wish (giving personally identifying information or not), but if there is a relationship, with please disclose it. After you respond (and you can just reply below), perhaps we can talk a bit about editing Wikipedia, to give you some more orientation to how this place works. Thanks! Hello Jytdog:
I have a web design business located in Key West. Among the many projects I’ve worked on was one for Absolutely Amazing eBooks. That’s how I became aware of Shirrel Rhoades. Wanting to start posting Key West related topics to Wikipedia, I thought that was a good place to start, a company that I found interesting. In a small town, everybody knows each other. I’ve been exposed to many other Key West companies, artists, writers that I’d planned to cover once I gain my “credentials” with Wikipedia. This was just where I started because I’d become fascinated with this publishing company after helping design its website three years ago.Keywestbookworm (talk) 02:16, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi - thanks for replying! You made it clear on your user page that you are local to the people and companies you have been writing about - the kind of "relationship" I'm asking about here, is the contractor kind (lots of folks with web design/SEO businesses also offer Wikipedia editing services) and you didn't really speak to that. Please pardon for me asking again, but would you please clarify? Thanks! Jytdog (talk) 03:14, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Jytdog:
I do not offer Wikipedia editing services as part of my web design business. I just think it is fun to edit and add stuff to Wikipedia.Keywestbookworm (talk) 21:01, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi - thanks for answering directly and for your graciousness in doing so - I appreciate it very much. I will let you be now. Please just keep in mind, as you continue developing Key West-related topics in Wikipedia {and it is wonderful to have someone like you, with great writing skills!}, the writing and work here is really different from just about everywhere else on the internet. I am not sure that Absolutely Amazing eBooks can currently meet the criteria in WP:NOTABILITY for what is... encyclopedia-worthy. But you'll work that out with others. Good luck to you, and thanks again! I really do appreciate your time and patience in talking with me. Jytdog (talk) 22:55, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
